Homers...
All these sig bets got me to thinking. Who are the biggest "Homers" on these boards. I say lets nominate 3 from the SEC. But there needs to be rules. 1. These guys always post good things about their team even when they absolutely suck. (this leaves me out right here). 2. They will rarely pick their team to lose, even when their team hasn't beaten that team in 10 years. 3. They will defend their team left and right after the loss with statements like "we beat ourselves" and "there multiple blown calls in that game". 4. They always think their rivals "suck" even when everyone else knows theyre pretty good. 5. They can have some quality, rational post at times but they are mixed with some homerism. Here are my Nominations. 1. Crunch.....he's wearing Orange and White underwear right now, id lay even money on it. 2. OrangeAfroMan.....if you so much as say anything about the Gators, he's on it like "stink on s..."...we'll, you get the Idea. 3.DJ ......have you heard the song "Georgia on my mind"...I think this was written for him. I just thought since everyone likes to slam each other this would be a good way to 'admire" these guys for their loyalty.

RE: Homers...
1A. DJ ... Their is always some cherry picked stat that proves UGA is going to be good. 1B. Crunch .... Every year it seems like it's going to be UT's year.
3. Hawg/kwyoung .... If you didn't know any better you would think their team has actually won something recently .
I thought OFM has admitted that UF has sucked the last 2 years but maybe it was someone else.Plus I am a gator fan too , so I have never met a Gator homer .

Just because Hawg uses facts to refute some of your statements doesn't make him a homer. He's one of the most objective posters on here. He is defensive if someone is making unfounded statements about Arky and he does like the term "helmet" a little too much. But, overall, dude is objective.

1. Crunch 2.crunch 3.crunch
I'm not sure why anyone else would even be nominated, me included. We sucked last year, and if we suck again, our coach will be replaced by someone better.

You are a bit misinformed. Sure, anyone can do that, but not everyone does, in particular crunch. My opinion is based on objective, relevant and fair facts rather than hatred (smoke) / love (crunch) of a school. If you dont think I have posted anything negative about the dawgs, you simply dont read every post of mine. Just this offseason, I pointed out how awful UGA was at giving up non-D points, and I also pointed out how our D needs to improve its ability to finish off a good team. When someone says something about my team, I will look the facts up to see if its accurate: - If a negative statement is proven to be true, I accept that reality. - If the negative statement is proven to be incorrect, that doesnt make me a homer, it makes the other person wrong.

I have plenty of posts where I use stats and facts to back up my statements.....go look at my posts about 04 Auburn being the better team than 04 USC. I just find it tedious to cherry pick stat after stat to prove my opinion or belief. Also, he is right, you hardly ever say anything bad about UGA. That is a fact. Just like I hardly say negative stuff about UT.

RE: Homers...
If a coach or player leaves its addition by subtraction. If a stat doesnt confirm your opinion discredit it and find one that does. If you are wrong on a point change the discussion to suit your opinion. If your team every faced a remotely similar situation and it worked out ok it is always exactly like that, anytime it didnt work out you should push the time it did. If your teams players do not reach established benchmarks for stats its unrealitic so just compare it to the average, for titles they are all luck even if everyone else in the big 6 has atleast 1. If asked to give an opinion always post an opinion in line with yours from another source other than you. Never make predictions as they are reminders that you are a homer.
Sorry DJ but I just posted your message board SOP.

RE: Homers...
I love how Crunch criticized our midget RBs at ever turn, and now that they're gone, NOW our offense will be terrible. This year we'll have 200+ lb RBs carrying the ball, all of which were 4 or 5-star recruits, but we'll have the worst offense ever because our midget RBs are gone.
I don't know of a word that means 'severe hypocrite', but that's what Crunch is.

So even after I point out what I said that was not positive about UGA, you still ignore it But if folks want to weigh in (and this is advice to you as well), it would help their argument to have examples proving this to be the case, and I doubt anyone can come up with evidence of that nature. When I make statements, its because facts back them up, which is the opposite of "homer".

1. What examples do you have of this? 2. If facts are gonna be used for a particular comparison, they must be vetted to prove its a credible tool for the comparison. They got to be fair and relevant to the subject matter. If you are used to your stats getting discredited, then that says a lot about whatever stats you are trying to use. Find some better ones. 3. What examples do you have of this? This is exactly what so many others do including you just this week when responding to the UGA 2011 receiving corp point, by trying to limit the discussion to top 3 of each team. 4. What examples do you have of this? 5. Overall production trumps individual production. Points in case: UT's overall run game still sucked despite Poole getting to the magical 1000 yard mark in 2010 + UGA's overall pass game was very good despite not having one reach the magical 1000 yard mark in 2011. This proves how worthless these benchmarks of yours are. 6. Some titles do involve luck: UF 96, LSU 03, UF 06, LSU 07, UF 08, Bama 12. Each had to depend on another team losing. 7. It really bothers you how credible sources can back my opinions up and prove yours wrong doesnt it? 8. Football is much more complicated than 5th grade guesses. Going in depth on both sides of the ball like I do says a lot more about a football mind than your simple thing.

I don't know of a word that means 'severe hypocrite', but that's what Crunch is. When one of your new guys proves to be a workhorse back, I will be worried. Don't blast me for talking up Marlin Lane, our next great back, when you are doing the same for your backs who haven't even played as many downs as him. Point is, everyone knew Demps or Rainey had the ability to to take it to the house every time they touched the ball. It seems like UF has ALWAYS had at least a few guys like that on offense every year since Spurrier arrived.......this is the first time in a long time there are no proven commodities. I would still take a good workhorse back and a solid number 2 over 2 scatback guys like that in my style of offense...but that doesn't mean they didn't annoy the hell out of me when we play ed against guys like that.

RE: Homers...
we're all a bunch of dang homers.. there ain't nuthin' wrong with that... it's when objectivity is lost things get frustrating.. that happens often around here.. and it's part of this joints charm..
I've no clue why you guys dislike Crunch so much.. his passion is admirable, and his lack of objectivity is entertaining.. we all know he's out to lunch on his expectations, and I venture a guess even he knows..
it's the ones who are ACTUALLY in their own little world that are annoying.. those who pull stats out of context, or pull what I charged my ex wife with: savage tactics.. (sah-vig tak-ticks; picking a fight using the art of fluidly transitioning from specifics to general topics while maintaining the appearance of neutrality, in effort to trick an adversary into taking a stance on something not defensible, or worse, defining, without consent, the adversaries supposed position/stance..) There are a bunch of you guys who do this.. Some of you have made it to endearing, some haven't left the realm of silly, and yet a few more are bonifide pricks because of using this little ploy over and over..
I've said it a google times: stats are not relative except for the context of one game.. case in point (don't savage tactic my arse, I'm speaking in general terms)- if a team CAN run the ball, why wouldn't they? People are quick to dismiss the air assault because the stats point to their ability to RUN- if the run is shut down, and all of the sudden they start passing effectively, it's viewed as an anomaly, and no credit is given for that, or the other teams pass defense is questioned (and only because people don't want to give up their previous opinion)..
or
a team plays three really stout defenses, and their offensive stats are damaged because of such.. when they play a lessor D, they lay a 500 yard game- and everyone a) holds the defense they faced suspect, when they aren't that bad, and b) sluffs off the offensive performance as a freak occurrence, when THAT performance may be most indicative of their true ability..
or
a team plays in a conference that is offensive in nature, and plays a string of 8 50pt+ games- everyone thinks they are awesome on offense, then they meet a team who plays solid D, and they are held to, say, 21pts.. people are more likely to dismiss the D by questioning the play calling, the individual players, or their motivation- and it's basically because they don't want to abandon the preconceived notion they've clutched all season..
I could go on and on with the reason stats suck.. they are simply, in short- an effort to quantify a teams ability, but are so subjective and contingent on variables that it will never ever accomplish such.. anytime somebody starts tossing stats as defense of their opinion, I hold that argument suspect..
you gotta watch the games to truly know what happened- and take ALL factors into consideration when sizing up a team..
"Victory goes to the player who makes the next-to-last mistake." ~ Chessmaster Savielly Grigorievitch Tartakower (1887-1956)

Not sure who you are directing this to, but I will share my opinions of your thought process anyways 1. I can buy that. We all want our team to look good. 2 different kinds of homers: - Objectivity = Fair, credible, and relevant stats that quantify how good particular areas of a team were in a game and over a season- Subjectivity = Biased opinions based upon a few vague memories over the course of a season 2. I got no issues with Crunch. Never have. 3. Agree, which is why we have contextually appropriate stats to vet, which can prove their credibility; for example, Hawg pointed out that UGA's D may have benefitted from an easier group of O's, so the stats were adjusted to account for that variable, and the comparison became more fair. Its why its fair to compare SEC teams against each other in detail as well. 4. Great to take all factors into account: QB, O, D, and ST. It helps to watch, but opinions simply based upon watching arent always credible without credible statistical evidence. Not many people can watch every game in detail, but we can look up the stats. Stats help sum up what happened in a game and over the course of a season quite well, and opinions need their support. Evidence is a good thing to have on this board. 5. If you have seen my posts, you know I hate out of context stats 6. I can only imagine what you went through with someone crazy like that. I certainly dont have a strategy of that nature, so I wonder who you are talking about.
