All-Time All-SEC Roster

All-Time All-SEC Roster

All these old games made me wonder, what would an all-time SEC roster look like.  Not just the 22 starters, but a full roster.  A mix of old and new, every team represented at least once, etc.  It'd be about 70-80 guys, all legends.  I don't think it'd be wise to just make a full roster list right off the bat, so I'll look at the QBs for now.  If you have a position you'd like to focus on, please do.

The easy part:  listing a bunch of great QBs off the top of my head.
The hard part:  picking 3 for the roster

Tebow, Newton, Manziel, Murray, Leak, Manning, Manning, Manning, Greene, Wuerffel, Sullivan, Russell, McCarron, Spurrier, Namath, Zeier, Hodson, Shuler, Mallett, Grossman, Bobo, Campbell, Stafford, Matthews, Craig, Woodson, Shaw, Bray, Couch, Clausen, Bell, Ainge, B.Jones, M.Jones, Kelly, Lorenzen, Taneyhill, Cutler, Stoerner, and Wayne Madkin!!!

Guys I seriously consider:  Tebow, Murray, Archie & Peyton, Wuerffel, Sullivan, Spurrier, Zeier

My pick:  Tebow, Peyton, and Murray.
Why?  Cam did it for 1 year.  Johnny did it for 2.  Timmy did it for 3+.  Peyton didn't win the Heisman, didn't beat Florida.  So what?  It's a team game.  Murray didn't win anything, but he came thisclose (5 yards) from an SEC and likely  national championship with an intermittent running game and half his WRs out.  Oh, and he basically has almost every conference record.

This isn't about who's first or second, just on the squad or not.

The most talented QB I ever saw at UGA was Stafford, but some earlier guys named Tarkenton and Bratkowski were also pretty good.noidea

Tyler Bray?

Did Bray play last night?  I watched a little of the game, and saw Murray throw a TD on his first attempt.  He was the third QB in for KC.  Daniels looked sharp while he was in there.  Braysus may be in his last daysus.

Bray didn't play, wasn't scheduled to play. Saw Murray throw a near pick-6, though.

Re: All-Time All-SEC Roster

RB is stacked....it's absurd. It's hard to ignore NFL stuff when considering who the best in college was. The classic example is Wuerffel > Peyton. A guy like Emmitt Smith, all the talent in the world, not even Florida's career leading rusher (part of it is years at the school, but you know what I mean). Look up Joe Namath's stats. They suck. It's funny, back in the day, they passed much less, and MUCH less effectively. A 125 QB rating was really good 50 years ago. Having 10+ TD passes was good. Just having a better than 1-1 TD/INT ratio was good.

Back to the NFL and/or high draft pick issue, look at Stafford. He made throws others couldn't, but taking his college resume only, he MIGHT be top-3 at UGA all-time. Might.
In rating, he's behind Murray, Shockley, Greene, Bobo.....he's just ahead of Buck Belue. In yards, attempts and TDs, he's 4th. So a guy like that, #1 pick and all, I can't put him on an all-time All-SEC team when he may not even make UGA's all-time team.

1350 yards as a freshman.  Almost 4000 yards career in less than three full seasons.  His last year at Florida, with almost 1600 yards on a bad team, and everyone in the stadium knowing he would be the center of Florida's offense, was one of the greatest seasons ever by any College RB, inside or outside of the SEC.

If you're including NFL play then yeah maybe. But if it's based on ONLY what they did in college No Chance. Weurffel, Tebow, Manziel would all be overwhelming choices ahead of Peyton. Maybe even Cam, David Greene, Aaron Murray and AJ McCarron as well.

Re: All-Time All-SEC Roster

If this is really all time, we'd have to find a spot for Charlie Trippi.  He could play about every position on the field including place kicker.  Of course, he would be pretty small today, so it depends on whether you mean all time against level of competition at that time or today.noidea

When looking at an All-Star team, titles, which are team achieved, shouldn't be a huge factor.  Manning threw for 11,200 yards and 89 td's, went 39-6 as a starter.  The disrespect for Manning among many Florida fans is interesting.  I think it's because they feel like he overshadowed Wuerthel, when maybe he shouldn't have.  I'd have room for both of them on a 70 man roster.

Peyton is still 4th in career yards, 3rd in TDs, 3rd in completions.....I value total volume of work.  He had as many INTs as Stafford, but with 38 more TDs.  It almost doesn't matter what you do in 2 years or 1 year, it doesn't add up.  Yes, Cam Newton has a Barry Sanders-type year...but how is that better than 10,000 career yards or 120+ TDs?

There's nothing wrong with valuing someone's peak, but I go with longevity + production at a high level.

lol, you don't have to persuade me of how great Emmitt was, it was just an easy example.  The same thing is being discussed about Peyton Manning now.

RBs, best 3-year careers:
5259 Herschel
4590 McFadden
3928 Emmitt
3333 Moe Williams, UK
3261 Ingram
3232 Hearst
3130 Richardson

I seem to recall Emmit had a decent pro career also, which suggests he had some talent.

Both Emmitt and D-Mac ran all over us but neither one compares to the Big 2.

Re: All-Time All-SEC Roster

Don Hutson has to be on the team as a WR.

If we're going to have 4 RBs, is Herschel, Bo, D-Mac, and Emmitt it? Who would be fifth? On a realistic roster, how many should we have?
3 QB
5 RB
2 FB
8 WR
3 TE
12 OL, whatever breakdown works
6 DE
6 DT
3 MLB
6 OLB
6 CB
2 SS
2 FS
1 K
1 P
1 return man? I guess this is more of a 2-deep, with an extra guy for depth purposes. I don't know, anybody got something better?

Re: All-Time All-SEC Roster

SEC defensive players of the year (since 2003), before that, there was 1 SEC POY, i'll list the ones on defense:
2013 Sam MIZ
2012 J.Jones UGA
2011 Claiborne LSU
2010 Peterson LSU
2009 McClain ALA
2008 Berry UT
2007 Dorsey LSU
2006 Willis OM
2005 Ryans ALA
2004 Pollack UGA
2003 Lavalais LSU
2002 Pollack UGA
1988 Rocker AU
1986 Bennett ALA
1983 R. White UT
1968 J. Scott UGA
1957 Lou Michaels - only other non-skill position guy to win - OL.

A guy named Jackie Parker from Miss State was POY in '52 and '53, anybody know who that is?

Are 1978 UGA RB WIllie McClendon and Florida FB early 90s Willie McClendon related? Yeah, I could look it up, but it'd be cool if someone knew.

Re: All-Time All-SEC Roster

I don't see how you could do this roster justice with just a 70 man roster.

I think you have to go 3-4 deep at each position to do it any sort of justice, so we are talking close to a 100 man roster.
