It'll be interesting to see how Malzahn handles this.  That's two of the guys who are supposed to be team leaders getting in trouble recently.  In and of itself 8 grams of pot isn't earth-shattering.  Given Marshall's history at Georgia, he may have a shorter leash.

Much of the problem at AU under Chizik was related to off-field issues.  My thoughts are that Malzahn needs to make a point.  Not an example, I don't think he'll run anyone off.  But he needs to comment publicly, and take some disciplinary action with these guys that involves playing time.  Marshall was supposed to be going to SEC Media Days next week, not likely now.

I don't think it is a big deal unless it is a recurring problem. Have him run extra wind sprints. JMO.

I'm with you, Joe... Grass ain't what it used to be insofar as questioning someone's character for toking up... It IS against the rules, and should be addressed, but the important thing for coach M is to remain consistent with him as he would be with others.... In a few more years, this behavior won't even be illegal... Maybe against the rules, still, but not illegal... The world sure is changing fast, huh?

Incidently Joe, and this doesn't warrant a new thread, but instead a slight hijack: do you recall me postulating several years ago about recruiting and UT going head to head with Auburn for style players? Even in light of butch and malz, it looks to be true... Ouch, for my fellas... Durnit..

His favorite phrase is 'book it' and he's nearly always wrong. In fact, he is wrong more often than probability would predict. He is wrong even when his 'book it' refers to something that could go either way.~ Cincy on Crunch

I am not sure I remember. What do you mean by style players? I believe Auburn has a history of going head to head with Alabama and Georgia for players more so than Tennessee. Fulmer went against everybody head to head with great success.

It was under chiz, and when UT just lost kitten... The style of players were similar then for the two programs.... Pretty much back in that position, if they ever left... This time, it's UT totally rebuilding..

Re: Nick Marshall Cited for Possession

If this were Marshall's only offense, or if Malzahn hadn't recently kicked a walk-on of the team while talking about zero tolerance, and if this weren't the second incident in a couple of weeks by a supposed team leader and if all of the discipline problems under Chizik weren't still fresh in peoples' minds, this wouldn't be a big deal.  If Malzahn treats this as no big deal, he's asking for trouble, IMO.

It's funny, in 15 years, this won't be a thing anymore. Our society progresses glacially slow...

Re: Nick Marshall Cited for Possession

I think we're moving towards a time when weed is not as big a deal (and as a pretty conservative guy, I don't really like that), but right now, this is a kid who broke the rules.  Actually, he disregarded the rules and flat-out thumbed his nose at those who put them in place.  He knew there would be consequences, bad publicity for the Team and school, and it would be a distraction for the Team, but he didn't care.  This type of stuff is a "me first" attitude.  I don't care if these are college kids and "everybody does it".  That isn't an excuse.  Everyone has it all wrong...college is not about having fun and finding yourself, it is your first real step into adulthood and responsibility, and there should be a sense of obligation and gratitude to whoever it is that's paying the huge bill that is required to go to college.  That's my rant like I'm 80 years old.

As for Marshall, don't let him go to Media Days...let him be a little embarrassed, and do at least SOMETHING to show the rest of the Team that breaking rules have some sort of consequence.  Other than that, I'm not sure what you do in this situation.

Yeah, it's a lovely idea, but it's not realistic. He assumed he wouldn't get caught, because he didn't get caught the last 10 times.

It's slated to be legal in ALL 50 states within 48 months.  I'd drop that to 5 years!

How about Bama's DT having a DUI this past weekend? That doesn't get a mention? Think that'll be legal in 5 years?
