From what I understand, it was an apparent suicide.  Regardless of the circumstances, the world just got a little bit less funny.

Well this sucks. I can't type anything to adequately express the largeness of his life or of this loss, so "Nanu, Nanu, Robin, and rest in peace."

I think if we started talking about all his great work, we'd be blown away by our list not just because of its length but it's diversity: adult comedy, children's movies, award winning dramas, sitcoms, stand-up. He was so prolific. So sad to see that inner demons claim the best among us; and that's as an outsider/nobody. For his family/close friends, the seismicness must be suffocating.

We lost a great one today.

If you ever see people having a really rough time, a kind word or smile can make the biggest difference.

So sad to see this happen.

Re: OT - R.I.P., Robin Williams :(

Now that I think about it, watching his sitcom last year, the one with Sarah Michelle Gellar that just got canceled, he did not look happy. He was saying funny things and sounded funny, but the expression on his face looked like he could barely fake a smile and was nothing close to genuine happiness.

maybe its because I just recently went through a depression where I could not even fake a smile so I know that feeling.

I mean not the part about wanting to commit suicide, thats the part I will never understand. I just can't understand being so depressed that you would think death is better than living. But I guess some people just experience highs and lows more extremely than others.

I'm not saying this to be critical of Robin Williams, certainly not today, but was he ever not in performance mode?

Mork and Mindy was my first exposure to him as a kid, so I've been familiar with his career for a very long time, and I don't recall him being out of performance mode.  I speculate wildly and wonder if he felt that way about himself, that he always had to be in mode.

Re: OT - R.I.P., Robin Williams :(

During the 80's I would describe his style as "manic". His performances were very hyper where he throw out many things in a short amount of time and hope something would stick. Many thought he was hilarious but for me, the more manic he got, the more annoying he got. But I have enjoyed many things he has done, both in his hyper mode and when he has toned it down too.

The problem with a hyper personality, people don't let you just tone it down without someone asking whats wrong. If you are not "on" then something is wrong.

Probably no big secret he had a big cocaine addiction in the early 80's. But he eventually got sober until he relapsed in 2006. There was rumors he was back in rehab this summer for unknown reasons.

From what I have heard, Cocaine can produce unbelievable highs and lows. When you are high you have never felt so high, and when you are low, you have never felt so low.

Devastated. Just spent the evening reading about his life and what a good person he was as I watched the Birdcage. First celebrity death in my life that has hit me hard. It's tough losing a genuine hero.

Though I never knew him personally, you have to imagine his humor and substance abuse tried to cover up his depression. Proof though that even a broken brain can be genius.

Would you hate me if I told you jumanji was one of my favorite movies?

Sad to see him take his own life and i feel sorry for his family and friends. I just never was a big fan of him, his movies I couldn't watch because I just couldn't really stand him as an actor.

Re: OT - R.I.P., Robin Williams :(

He was always 'on' because he had ADD or more likely ADHD times 10. He must've been hell to deal with in grade school. He found an outlet to channel his hyperactivity and it served him well.

I imagine his last weeks, and death was very likely an easy choice. To be that hyper while being that depressed must've been intolerable. He was teeter-tottering his whole life, I'm sure, both through acting, self-medicating, getting help, relapsing, etc. He'd probably just had enough.

If so, I'm glad he's no longer struggling. He's obviously missed by many.

He fixes the cable?

Sounds like he was a pretty good guy, by all accounts. Too bad he felt he had to commit suicide. That will forever haunt his family and close friends.

I will say no more.

I am kind of pissed off that drug addict, hate monger and world class spreader of misinformation Rush Limbaugh couldn't show just a little common decency and felt the need to disrespect Robin Williams. Big difference between the two - one spread laughter and joy and the other continues to spew hatred and discontent. I will miss Robin Williams and I will celebrate when that fat, filthy bastard is rotting in the ground. Limbaugh only has one peer - Ted Nugent.

I was never a big fan of his. The manic, million miles an hour schtick kind of wore on me. Regardless, it's sad to see someone go out like this. Despite not being a fan of his comedy I did enjoy some of his movies. I always felt like Bicentennial Man was a more underrated movie that he was in.

Re: OT - R.I.P., Robin Williams :(

A lot of emotions came when I heard this... Sadness of course chief among them. All reports are that he was a genuinely good guy, so even outside of his acting ability and comedic genius, he seemed deserving of general respect.

What I didn't feel was shock or surprise... I'm not sure why that is... But I feel like I'd have been more surprised to hear he overdosed than suicide...

"We put two people on the moon" is an acceptable retort to "your football team sucks", right?
