Re: CFN Preseason All-Big Ten Team - Punter #1

Obviously Hagerup sat the 2013 season out because of marijuana, but he shared the top of the punt leaderboard with Sadler in 2012. Off the top of my head, I think Hagerup had a slightly better punt yardage year while Sadler had the more impressive number of punts inside the 20-yard line. I don't mind him going behind Sadler, who was probably slightly superior in 2012 (punts inside the 20 are more valuable than sheer yards) and Johnston showed up since then and proved himself very good. Hagerup will suffer here for spending the last year out of the consciousness, but he definitely comes from the Zoltan Mesko lineage of boomers. Off-the-field issues aside, it'd be interesting to see how the dust settled after fall camp if he shared a roster with either of the two favorites in this poll.

All that aside, getting Hagerup back at punter and Wile to focus his craft (he did the punting and long-distance FGs in 2013) is a significant step up for Michigan's STs.

Hagerup should have been dismissed.

Out in the real world, weed offenses and repeat weed offenses are never going to be something I am willing to pretend are interesting. As long as we aren't talking about dealing or driving under that influence, I just cannot care. On a football field, my feeling is slightly different because the publicity and the suspension hurt the team. But other than that, I can only fall asleep if I try to have strong opinions about how Hagerup ever got suspended from the team for more than a calendar year (because he smoked weed and then tested positive again while on coach-mandated probabtion for the first time). (...) zzzz (...). It was a non-story.

I believe that when a kid is on scholarship and commits an illegal act, he should be kicked off scholarship. I don't care if it's a football scholarship or an engineering scholarship.

It's called a life lesson. You violate someone's trust and you pay for it.

I wouldn't have dwelled on it if he had been kicked off, but a 13-16 month suspension is almost the same to me. It's not the illegality of the act, though, but the lack of accountability to his team that made me think he deserved a punishment of some kind. Marijuana is a thing circumscribed by very arbitrarily drawn legal lines.

In the real world, the use of pot will get you fired if you fail a drug test.

In my very real world, it would cost me professional licensure, and therefore my business.

I voted for the Illini guy. He'll likely get lots of game experience. pirate

That's changing--and fast. But as of 2014, yes.

It certainly isn't like that for all jobs.
