Sorry, "basically" closed. My initial hunch still says this is BS, but I guess we will find out.

Big difference.  Particularly when it's the defense attorney making it.  I hate to say it, but a star player is going to get EVERY benefit of the doubt on this sort of thing, and I would actually be more skeptical if this was a recent thing.  The fact that it's been a year and the school still hasn't closed the case actually makes me think there's something there.

Yes,  me too...but the fact  I am biased for the Buckeyes pretty much negates my chance of being fair-minded about this tongue  17 days to Ann Arbor..tongue   Go Bucks! tongue

RE: Jameis Winston investigated for sexual assault

I have an idea what happened. It was a party and Winston was drunk and grabbed a body part. He was never charged with anything, hence the word investigation. This sounds like the woman who wakes up from a one night stand after a night of drinking and cries rape when they see what they just screwed, and regret it. I don't think Winston is anymore a criminal than any of us who just haven't gotten caught doing something

Re: Jameis Winston investigated for sexual assault

In the police report, the suspect is listed  between 5’9″ and 5’11″  weighing approximately 240 pounds.  FSU lists Winston at 6'4",  228 pounds. This must be the reason that 11 months after the complaint no case has been filed.

Unfounded scuttlebutt does not make a case. At this point apply the presumption of innocence to Winston.

What I'm saying is as much as high profile athletes get away with stuff, they also get unfairly targeted by attention seekers. They have to be more perfect than regular people

I can imagine it now: "Hey that drunk guy grabbing on you at the club is a QB for FSU, let's go public with this!"

Re: Jameis Winston investigated for sexual assault

who know if he did something or not, i dont think there is anyway of knowing that at this point.

from a football perspective it probably doesnt hurt FSU at this point, because he hasnt been charged and the school said he will play. which i dont know that i can argue, although you might want to think about getting the backup a few more reps in the blowouts.

as far as the heisman goes, it might hurt him big time. i can only guess, but i would think that a lot of voters are turned off by off the field issues when voting, which is one reason i dont think johnny football had a shot this year no matter how good he looked. so if winston gets formally charged or not, it'd be interesting to see if he falls out of heisman grace.

The police report made available to the public has almost no details. It's impossible to tell anything, even what is alleged.

smokeshow = hot as hell. I did not invent this term, wish I could take credit for it.

Re: Jameis Winston investigated for sexual assault

was listening to ESPN radio on lunch,

so a question was asked to I believe it was the state attorney general or maybe it was another prosecutor as to why he was now only looking at the case .

ESPN was reporting that the local police/sherrif's office only forwarded the case to the prosectuor's office after a media outlet had inquired to the police about the case.

in my opionion this does not mean winston is guilty, but now we are getting the smell of a cover up, which is usually not good.

Everything about this is weird, from the timing to the description of the accused. The description of the accused is nowhere near similar to Winston. Describing someone being 5'9" - 5'11" is implying they are a big on the shorter side, as opposed to someone 6'4". I can't ever imagine thinking someone 6'4" or close to 6'4" as 5'9". The description alone raises giant red flags about what's going on.

My biggest question is why is Winston being tied to this? He has never been interviewed by police or prosecutors, so how does his name suddenly come up?

As opposed to cover up, this almost seems like it could be headed for a case of slander.  More infomration will come in, but this whole thing is odd at this point.

certainly possible as well, I just dont get why the local police basically dont do anything for almost a year, then the media inquires into the case and its quickly shuffled off to the prosecutors office

either they are incompetent, or they are covering something up, or maybe as you suggest they felt it was slander but now dont want to be seen as giving an athlete favoritism.

guess only the coming weeks will shed some light

The backup is named Coker. He was injured and is out for the year following the Wake Forest game.

My educated guess is that the Tallahassee PD felt there was no probable cause so they didn't turn it over earlier.   TPD could have filed a complaint but didn't do so because there was in their opinion no probable cause. With the media inquiring they turn it over to the state attorney because they do not wish to be accused of protecting football players from rape allegations, and the prosecutor can make the final call and give them cover.

This is an example of how an innocent person might fall under a veil of suspicion, and be harmed by scuttlebutt. The worst part of all is that anyone of us could come under scrutiny for acts we did not do. I have seen it happen in my area. But usually it is the police department that issues a press release containing adverse publicity, a case is filed that is not worth a dime, and later it gets dismissed because it was never worth a dime. The police know that in a small town that the punishment is in the adverse publicity, and that the dismissal rarely appears on the same page of the newspaper, if it appears in the paper at all.

Police investigation reports ought to be confidential unless a case is filed, and even then probably ought to remain confidential until the case is concluded so that adverse publicity does not destroy the wrongly accused, or otherwise impact on the accused's right to a fair trial before his peers.

While I'm sure his guilt is deemed as a certainty by Columbus radio stations, I certainly wouldn't want to predict guilt or innocence given the limited facts made public thus far.  Could be just a publicity-seeking prosecutor jumping back on the case thanks to Winston's new found celebrity....or the Columbus radio stations could actually be right in same way that broken clocks are right twice a day.

Edit:  While this doesn't "feel" like anything to me, given Manti-Teo and Manziel's antics, this might ding Winston's front-runner Heisman status.  Voters could look at him as someone they could just vote for next year if this whole thing blows-over.

I would believe anything at this point.  After all, it's Florida.  That state's law enforcement/government is so corrupt (personal experience with a family friend).  It can all happen there.

I'm still not sure, though he does have an attorney and I assume if he wasn't the person in question his attorney would probably say so given he is talking about the case.  But really, at this point there is nothing substantive to go on.  It could be something big that the PD sat on, and just as likely could be nothing and people are just scrambling to follow the right procedures because Winston is a star and they want to avoid any appearance of impropriety.

Interesting. I would have pointed to Urban before Johnny with all of his connections down in Florida and his willingness to do anything to get into the national championship game.. See. 2006
