That's one INSANE forty time (especially to put up at the combine, where times are electronic and legit).

Forty time doesn't make up for field awareness and anticipation on instincts. I've seen guys run blazing fast but can't tackle or catch the ball when thrown to, so the 40 time is over rated unless in in arena ball where WR's get a running start before the ball is hiked.

What you say is true, to a degree.  That's why a lot of "track guys" don't make it as football players.

Speed kills, though.  Technique can be taught; you can't teach a 4.24 forty.

At what point in a football game other than a clear break to the end zone does a football player run forty yards without cutting direction (except the go route)? Even if you run the go route enough the defense will catch on. Foot speed is what is important and vision at any position, that's what made Barry Sanders and Jerry Rice so dominate. I'm not knocking your enthusiasm for Mr. Johnson here, but come on, other than a dash to the end zone when will he ever use that 4.24 speed? How about you share some of his stats from college?

You're arguing with the choir here, as they say, my friend.  No need to even have this discussion.  The forty time is just one parameter that tells you how fast a guys is, running in a straight line.  It does not correlate well with production (though it doesn't hurt, all other things being equal).  That's why they also run the shuttle, three cone drill, broad jump, etc at the combine.

I don't know the first thing about Johnson as a player.  My only comment was that was a very, very impressive forty time.  That's Deion Sanders territory.

That is pretty interesting because that is not the fastest40 time at a combine ihave seen. There was another Cris Johnson from U. of Louisville back in the late 90's or early 2000's who was timed in 4.18 at the combine.

He was not ever a starter(at least on a regular basis). He was drafted strictly based on the fourty time as a special teams player but never amounted to anything.

In 2007 Chris Johnson led the division 1 ncaa in all purpose yards in receptions, runnning, punt returns, and kick off returns.  I also know him since high school where I drove him and the track team to meets.  In 2003, their 4X100 relay was undefeated and Florida state champions.  They also won the Golden South and was national champions.  He was anchor on relay and ran a 10.38  100 m  time.   He was mvp  in the high school football allstar  game.   Mvp  at  East Carolina  and will be  successful in the nfl.  He's very coacheable  and humble.  I told my co workers he'd run the fastest time and they were ecstatic.

He killed Boise State during the bowl game.  That guy is lying in the weeds; whoever signs him gets a steal.
