USC fires head coach Frank Cruz

USC fires head coach Frank Cruz

USC has announced the termination of Frank Cruz as head baseball coach.  Assistant coach Dan Hubbs will take over as head coach.

I don't know exactly whats going on over there, but the entire thing doesn't make a lot of sense.  Firing a head coach two days before the start of a season is unheard of. The press release doesn't name Hubbs as interim coach, it says head coach.  That is almost never the case when a head coach is fired during a season.  It is always an interim coach with a full search to be done following the season.  Cruz is supposedly getting fired for deliberate violations of NCAA rules.  That is certainly an acceptable reason for firing a coach.  I'll pose this question though, don't you think the assistant coaches had knowledge as well?  The releases have mentioned violating practice hours.  Practice schedules are typically handled by assistant coaches.  There sounds like a lot more to this story than is being released so far.

If USC is hiring Hubbs as the head coach going forward, it marks the third straight head coaching hire that makes little sense in my opinion.  Kreuter and Cruz were horrible hirings, and that was the consensus at the time of hiring not looking back now.  Hubbs isn't that bad, but I'd expect USC to at least interview a number of qualified candidates first.  Former Titan assistant Greg Bergeron, Oregon assistant Mark Wasikowski, San Diego head coach Rich Hill, UCSB head coach Andrew Checketts.  There are plenty of other qualified assistants at big school or head coaches at smaller schools that USC may be able to pry away.

USC announced Wednesday it fired baseball coach Frank Cruz for violating NCAA rules for the number of hours players are allowed to practice directed by or supervised by the coaching staff.

Pitching coach Dan Hubbs, a former USC All-American pitcher, was named baseball coach.

"Adhering to all NCAA rules is paramount for each one of our coaches, student-athletes and staff members," athletic director Pat Haden said in a statement. "Those who knowingly break NCAA rules are subject to termination."

USC announced a self-imposed reduction in practice hours for the next two seasons.

Cruz replaced Chad Kreuter, who was fired by Haden in 2010. Cruz had a 48-63 overall record the past two seasons.

"I'm confident that Dan Hubbs and his staff will lead our team to a successful season," Haden said. "Dan is a good coach, he is highly-regarded in the baseball community and he has strong Trojan roots."

Pat, firing the coach makes sense, but did you get the right sport? Being the good Catholic Saint Patrick is, we should put him in charge of the LA Archdiocese and have him clean house!

When Pat Haden took the helm as A.D. at USC, he made it quite clear that he would have zero tolerance for knowing NCAA violations in any sport.

Haden now has to hire a head basketball coach and a head baseball coach.  If things don't improve with football in the coming season, alumni will be calling for Kiffin's termination too.

I would apply for the head coaching position at USC, but I would rather be Pope.

I believe that George just signed a new 5 year contract with Oregon, so there is no way he is going to leave to become coach of the STROGANS..

If SC was really serious about returning as a contender in college baseball . . . How about Pat Murphy? Would Pat Haden sell his his soul to the (sun)devil to return to the glory days of Rod (Go get him Tiger!) . . .
