YOUR TOP TEN TITANS Post Rating (4 votes)

Now that this season is arriving the sun is pretty much setting on talking about non 2009-10 Titan Basketball topics.  So I thought I would close out that pathetic and unacceptable part of the calendar that does not include any Titan Basketball games with a top ten list of our favorite Titan Basketball players of all time, kind of like we are summoning their spirits for halloween and the upcoming season if you will.

Now it seeems every year we do this, but let's rank them.  We will have a final poll compiled similar to the coaches and media poll.  The greatest Titan favorite and top ten of all will be crowned after we talley up.  Here's mine.

1.  Ralphy Holmes

2.  Richard Morton

3.  Yaphett King

4.  Henry Turner

5.  Bobby Brown

6.  Mark Hill

7.  Aaron Sunderland

8.  Agee Ward

9.  Hardy Asprilla

10.  John Williams

Also Considered:  Herman Webster, Frank Robinson, Chris Dade, Chris St. Clair, Scott Cutley, Marcus Crenshaw, Derek Jones

Re: YOUR TOP TEN TITANS

I've had season tickets for about 13 years so could not comment on earlier players, but my "favorite" player, as opposed to the best players was hands down Matt Caldwell.

How did that cheer go? I think it was "Cald well kill you"

RE: YOUR TOP TEN TITANS

1.Greg Bunch, 3 rounds NCAA’s, 2nd round NBA choice, Titan Hall of Fame, Visionary, etc, etc
2.Michael Linden (aka Little Magic for the way he shut down Magic Johnson at MSU, No kidding.)
3.Kevin Heenhan, because when he shot the ball all you heard was swish
4.Keith Anderson, one of the most complete Titan players ever.
5.Ralphy Holmes, especially for that buzzer beater shot at Oregon State.  All he does is win.
6.Yaphette King, especially since he valued the fans as much as his teammates.
7.Bobby Brown, for putting Titan basketball back on the map in so many ways.
8.Chris St. Clair, team energy level always spiked when he walked onto the floor
9.Frank Robinson, because he’s Frank Robinson. Success is his middle name.
10.Mark Hill, if only for intercepting the Beach’s inbounds pass and draining the winner in the loudest game I can remember played in the Gold Mine.

Honorable mention: Leon Wood, Hardy Asprilla. Agee Ward, Joe Small, Vershan Cottrell (homer that I am), and every player otherwise not named that played on the ’78 NCAA team (especially Greg Palm for the job he did on Cartwright), ’05 NIT team (especially Jamaal Brown for USF), and ’08 NCAA team (!!).

"Favorite" players?  What, is this a man-crush thread?

Forget that, who were the "best" players (as Titans)?

Wood, Bunch, Neal, Roberts, Ceballos, Henderson, Holmes, B. Brown, Sow, Cutley.

Honorable mention:  K. Anderson, Morton, Bowen, F. Robinson, J. Akognon.

Re: YOUR TOP TEN TITANS Post Rating (4 votes)

What in Hell do you have against having a little fun, RFD?

We have a rampant attack of Puritanism/Jansenism around here that starts with the AD wanting "church manners" at ballgames and rolls all the way downhill to you.

My favs:

1. Yaphett King:  Example:  I was with Kirk and TC at SLO.  Some long-azz, skinny white boy about 6'7" stuffed a million (it seemed) of Yaphett's jumpers.  He kept putting them up until the kid's arm and legs got tired.  Pumped us to victory.

2.  Ralphy Holmes:  The Velcro hands said it all.  If you threw a ball in his neighborhood, he caught it.

3.  Greg Bunch:  Could jump out of the gym, was a coach on the floor, and, like Ralphy, was a tenacious defender when the game was on the line.

4.  Leon Wood:  The stats are not flukes.  Character!

5.  Mark Hill:  Another scholar athlete.  Best three shooter ever his junior year, although he never had a single GAME like Josh's against Wisconsin.  Idiotic coach Sneed actually TEASED him when he went into a slump his senior year.  John was a decent human, unless you whizzed him off, then he simply went nuts and stayed nuts.

6.  Marcus Crenshaw:  I want to see a minute-by-minute breakdown of his value to the team when he was on the floor.  No one could turn a game around off the bench like him.

7.  Bobby Brown:  Late bloomer who got better almost every game and is still doing so now.

8.  Kevin Heenan:  See number 6.  The same.

9.  Yes, RFD, it is favs, not the best.  The best player ever was pro'ly Ced Ceballos.  But he was not a good person when he was here.  Looks as if he has straightened up.

10.  Kevin Henderson:  Big, strong, excellent defender, great shooter, a tremendous quarterback.

There are a lot of players I feel like apologizing to.  We need a top 25 list, but I gotta get back to work!

Thanks TB, for starting this.  TITAN BASKETBALL SHOULD FIRST OF ALL BE ABOUT FUN!!!

Re: YOUR TOP TEN TITANS

This is hard to do, Muser.  Red, Niles, Henry, Tony, Herman and especially the great Calvin Roberts all deserve a spot on anyone's Top 25.

Re: YOUR TOP TEN TITANS Post Rating (1 vote)

I agree that it's hard to do. There have been so many great players who have come through here in the 34 years or so I've been watching Titan basketball.

But here goes:

1. Greg Bunch.

2. Leon Wood

3. Ralphy Holmes

4. Tony Neal

5. Bruce Bowen

6. Bobby Brown

7. Keith Anderson

8. Scott Cutley

9. Kevin Heenan

10. Richard Morton

10. Henry Turner

Honorable mention: Josh Akognon, Ozell Jones, Yaphette King, Kevin Henderson, Frank Robinson, Aaron Sunderland.

We also shouldn't forget the two Bobs: Bobby Dye and Bob Burton, both of whom have taken us to the promised land (the NCAA).

Re: YOUR TOP TEN TITANS

Great thread TB... These are my favorite Titan Players of all-time, as of today (might be different tomorrow):

1. Ralphy Holmes

2. Leon Wood

3. Scott Cutley

4. Richard Morton

5. Bobby Brown

6. Yaphett King

7. Frank Robinson

8. Alexander Hamiliton

9. Agee Ward

10. Greg Bunch *

* Only one I never saw him play but I got a chance to interview him and based on that, and what he has done for today's program, he makes it in.

Tough, tough list to make and narrow down to 10. Top 5, for me, were easy. Struggled leaving off Bruce Bowen because of what he has done on/off the court in the NBA. I think the snub of the HoF to go to China hurt him here.

Burton would be on here but he did say players.

8. Frank Robinson

9. Scott Cutley

10. Yaphett King

10 a. Yaphett King

10 b. Andy Hinkle

I also really like Don Leary, too.

Make some room for JB on my list. Damn, I thought I was being so careful, but I forgot one. JB was the man. The bridge to our championship team.

I also forgot John Williams from those unremarkable Hawking Era. He was the boss.
