TAC Men's Basketball Chalk Talk - Saturday, January 19

You can have all of your Titan basketball questions answered, and learn the game plan from Head Coach Andy Newman, as the Titans prepare to face arch-rival Long Beach State on Saturday, January 19.  New Athletic Director Jim Donovan will also be on hand to greet all of the Titan fans.

The Chalk Talk will begin at 4:00 p.m., and will be held at the University Village dining hall (Yorba Linda Bl. & Oxford Ave.).  Complementary appetizers and beverages will be available.  All Titan fans are invited to attend this free event hosted by the Titan Athletic Club.

Re: TAC Men's Basketball Chalk Talk - Saturday, January 19

Some highlights that I remember, from new and improved AD Jim Donovan:

  • SDSU and Boise State banners coming down. Request sent to facilities (Good litmus test to see how new AD and facilities work together)
  • Best thing to happen was for the embarrassment with the microphone at Dilapidated Titan Gym when Jim Donovan was introduced. He simply is not going to put up with those kind of mishaps anymore. He said microphone will now work from Goodwin field. biggrin
  • Athletics department will now act like any other real business. Administrators and coaches will now be held accountable. Jobs are now (finally) in the balance. Heads will roll!!!! (my interpretation)
  • Excuses will no longer be tolerated. "We can" will replace "We can't"
  • We will FINALLY have a feasibility study done for adding a new arena. Baby steps, yes, but at least we have a top official who is showing vision.
  • Everybody in his department will be responsible for customer service and marketing. This is a big one, a really big one. Hopefully now the alumni, community and students will be treated with respect, instead of treated with disdain and/or like criminals.
  • Donovan will not laugh or roll his eyes at stupid questions, unlike yours truly
  • He seems to have a serious plan to right this ship. He has a list of 10 things he wants to change each year. Because the department is so messed up, the first 10 will take 18 months instead of 12.
  • Live feeds will start happening during games and shown on the new big video screen. Equipment already purchased by VP office and could happen as soon as Homecoming game. I believe he said there will be three cameras. This would be another huge step and also shows that change is indeed happening
  • We have a very low budget but Donovan is putting together a plan to present to the president which will ask for more funds. I forget the numbers but I think we are currently funding only 2/3 the maximum allowed scholarships for our programs and he wants to be fully funded in all sports.

What else did I miss?

Hard to blame the ticket office for this.  We have proven year after year than we cannot sell out that section amongst ourselves.

It is true we do not sell the section out but is it really too much to ask that our ticket dept. suggest the section opposite their team's bench? This is where they belong anyway. Oh, that's right, that's where our Administration sit.

Our administration simply has a long history of a lack of common sense. Very hopeful this will be changing soon.

Yes he did share the list and said something about have it framed and posted somewhere. And yes, some of the above was listed in the bullet points. Was hoping others who attended would help fill in the blanks.

Jim Donovan's Titan Top Ten "Musts."  I will also be including this list in this week's issue of Titans Ink.

1.  Customer Service is Paramount!
2.  Our customers are:  Student-Athletes; Students; CSUF staff; Ticket purchasers; Corporate sponsors and Donors.
3.  If I disrespect a customer, I disrespect the university.
4.  If a customer has a concern or complaint, we will employ the Disney "LAST" approach:  Listen, Apologize, Solve and Thank.
5.  We will outwork our competition!
6.  We will focus on the "cans" and not the "can'ts."
7.  We do things "the best way," not necessarily the way "it's always been done here."
8.  Anyone can point out a problem."  We will suggest and implement solutions."
9.  There's no reason we can't win a championship in every sport - every year!
10.  EVERYONE on staff has a role in customer service, marketing and fundraising!  What can I do?!

The people working the ticket office that night determined where fans sit. I used to work in the ticket office and if I saw someone wearing another teams gear, I would sit them next to their bench or the opposing team’s fans.  It was common sense to me. we can ask the ticket staff to seat fans wearing an opponent’s gear behind their bench.  This will not completely stop all of the opponent’s fans from sitting in Section K but it will reduce it.

Smith!!! I think it is time the University reaches out to you for ideas on how to get students back to games!! Call it a consulting fee if you will. Your still a young buck that students would rally behind!! Help with fundraising and on campus functions!!! You were the founding father of the Orange Curtain and its time to get it back!!!

RE: TAC Men's Basketball Chalk Talk - Saturday, January 19

ATF, it's really about the athletic department deciding that they WANT a student section. We've tried everything the last couple years to get students out to the games, but we get absolutely no assistance from the athletic department.

That was when Scott "'Cuff's" Stowe was in the Events Manager chair and F'd up the fan potential that Bobby Brown and his friends stirred up.  Cuff's has been regulated to relative janitorial duty (why he's still drawing a CSUF paycheck is beyond me since he is the poster child for Donovan's #3) and there is a new Sheriff in town.  So perhaps the Orange Curtain Student Section can get back on track.

there is new leadership all around, time will tell what happens, but let's try to move forward............

perhaps Mr. Donovan can:
increase the amount of schollies available
get the students to want to show up
get the administration engaged
get the alumni engaged
get the community engaged
fix the ridiculous bars on the southside second level of the gym
buy a spotlight, install TV cameras
correct our parking ills
purchase a scissors lift so he can personally remove two banners
figure out how to sell beer in HTG

seems as though he's got his hands full......good luck, we need it!

RE: TAC Men's Basketball Chalk Talk - Saturday, January 19

The four Long Beach fans were obviously wearing LB colors, and were hard to miss.  A fight could have broken out late in the game, and the usual heavy contingent of campus police that are there for that game were not there.

Beer anyone???

RE: TAC Men's Basketball Chalk Talk - Saturday, January 19

the CSUF community (faculty, staff and students) need to recognize that athletics is a part of campus/college experience....
I remember as a student when we had football, there were some faculty who did not care for athletics (although academic standards were a lot more lax (almost non-existent?) during that time just to get some of the football players on the team)
It would be nice to get more of the faculty interested in things other than just academics. (I feel some of the attitudes reflect the same as we imagine is the mindset of our "commuter" student population)

I guess it will have to start from the top with our Prez and flow down.... (has anyone seen her at a game this year?)

The program has plenty big $$$$.

We could give breathalizers to everyone walking in.

Or we could just screen out mean-looking people like Holland and Greek.

How about not giving promotions out to the visiting section!! I could not believe when i heard that the In-n-Out double double section was the LB section (M?) behind their bench... like really????? bangheadbangheadbanghead  I knew a double double was highly unlikely since they're very rare this year when you don't rebound. But either way that's still ridiculous!!

Section M is right next to the Orange Crush Section L, not behind the Visitor bench.  More, Section M used to be the 1st tier section for the Titan Hellraisers during the glory years.
