Quotes from Game

Quotes from Game

"After the game, I was disappointed in myself and in the way we played down the stretch. That was like a shot to the gut. We're going to move on and not cry about it and not complain about it, and we'll take it like men and hopefully get better.

"If we rebound the basketball and make free throws, we win the game. We could have done things to prevent it to coming down to this.

"Our players gave an unbelievable effort and fought, but we didn't win. We're going to have to learn from ourselves. We have to play better and we understand that."

No, not from Andy Newman, but from Colorado's coach Tad Boyle after they blew a late lead and, among other things, failed to hit their free throws against No. 3 and unbeaten Arizona. They also hit a 3-pointer to seemingly win the game in regulation only to have it called off by seemingly blind referees. /id/8811934/tad-boyle-colorado-buffaloes-basketbal l-coach-wants-end-instant-replay-controversial-ove rturned-call

Like our game, despite the bad calls, Buffs should have won the game.

Re: Quotes from Game

6/11 FT is a killer.

Isn't this iteration of the Titans a lot better than that from the line?

I know we were homed, but I am talking pct.

We got Homed no doubt but yeah gotta make those free throws...Like a DB the team must forget it and take out Northridge on Sat.

Re: Quotes from Game Post Rating (2 votes)

in spite of the questionable calls, they should have won the game.  guards MUST make layups and hit free throws...especially down the stretch.  the team simply doesn't have a big margin for error, they must play a clean game...missing those "easy" shots lay ups/FT's can't happen.
against a fairly size-imposing squad, the fellas held their own, they should be encouraged by that fact.
that would have been a nice win to get.
any chance McLellan comes back this year?

Re: Quotes from Game

Way to go 78.

Astringent criticism of an unlucky team that is not overcoming its misfortunes is not giving up the ship, Kirk.  I am Titan all the way, even when they played my alma mater in championship games at Rosenblatt.

I am sure TC, 78, Jim and others expressing their dismay are not giving up the ship, either.

None of this is a criticism of Coach Andy, either.  This team, SO FAR, is just effen snake bit.

Re: Quotes from Game

You mean Nelson, McLellan didn't get his hardship approved.

Re: Quotes from Game

Doc, there has to be some criticism of Andy. He told the team to milk the clock at 5 minute mark, they couldn't handle our guards and we should have put the peddle to the metal, and on their necks(that's for Kirk), and attack the rack and posted their guards up. Also should have pressurered the inbounder after our three to tie the game, and should have put on some light pressure on the man with the ball on the final 4.9 seconds. Andy is learning game management, and he should get better each game - hopefully these tough losses will pay benefits at the BWT.

Re: Quotes from Game

Ruf, yes - Nelson....I can't tell the players without the scorecard.

Andy went by the standard coaches playbook - stall.  I too was posting last night "to run"...but Andy would have been one of the few had he chosen to keep the peddle down.
To reiterate - the team hopefully realizes they CAN compete/win.  Just need to finish the deal.
Several nice plays by the Deuce-ster last night also.

Re: Quotes from Game

Yes, Duece has been playing much better since Reno. He still looks to the bench after he makes a mistake, he's gaining, or regaining, his confidence - but still is afraid of the early hook from Andy. He is still a big key, if we are to be a complete team.

Re: Quotes from Game Post Rating (1 vote)

This team has shown no balls.

Could be 12-1.  Sound outrageous?  Not at all.

Someone explain why we could not and should not have put away Nev, EW, UW, Bake and Hawaii.  We had all those games for the taking, with a little balls and brains.

Newman better get up to speed on this.

RE: Quotes from Game

Once again Rufus is right..... scary!?!?!?
Andy islearning about theteam as well as game management...
I too would like to see us running for 40 minutes and not give them a chance to regroup....

Now it is league time and can't give opponents breaks.
All the OOC losses were team chemistry beat CSUN!!!!

Re: Quotes from Game Post Rating (2 votes)

Note that basketball games are NEVER won or lost by the last shot. It is ALWAYS the culmination of 40 minutes of executing (not turning the ball over meaninglessly, making FT, grab the board.) Not saying anything new here, I can cry a river, these games will occur again.

Exactly. Time will heal and next game couldn't come soon enough.

Re: Quotes from Game

Fatigue has been a factor all our loses save Stanford,  given our 6 starters and 1 sub lineup.

Perhaps that is why Andy slowed down at 5.

RFD, I agree that we shouldacouldawoulda been 12-1 at this point, but I do not think this team lacks courage so much as it is tired and "snake bit".  There has to be a "here we go again" bell that rings in their heads later in the game.

Re: Quotes from Game

I think we should support Andy, and not just because I like him.

I served on the search committees that found Bill Shumard and Brad Holland.

In both cases, there was a "country hick from OC wowed by West LA connections" factor.

I have little faith in the search committee process around here.  The Athletics Department has sunk too low to organize an effective committee, and, assuming the best about the new AD, it will take awhile for things to rise to mere adequacy.

Re: Quotes from Game Post Rating (1 vote)

Here is my take...Andy is doing a masterful job with this group...The problem is you can not win many games with this group...We lack size and we lack depth...Memo to Rufus...How in the hell can you run, run, run for 40 minutes with basically 6 guy?..Most teams will have two players for each position at the minimum 8...We don't even have the minimum...We probably can't run a descent practice with this group but we are winning games...My advice to the many Titan fans is this, we have to play with the hand we were dealt. Get all the positives out of this season and hope for the best...In my years of basketball I have not seen a team like this at this level...What I do like about this group is that they have great character and they play very, very hard...They know they are small and lack depth but not once have they threw in the towel...When Deuce was at LA Tech they had size and depth but were soft as tissue paper and whiners...I would take my chances with this group over any team like that...

Re: Quotes from Game

The old Roofster is showing his age.  The game is SO uptempo that nobody can play 40 minutes w/o showing fatigue.

When I sat with Kirk and Vershan's dad at the UW game, I saw this first hand.  They just start "melting" in their own sweat.

I think that is why Andy is starting to slow things down, at least a bit.

Underwood and Horne have done more than deprive us of a three man 4/5 rotation.  They have reduced an 8 man team to a 6 man team.

I am afraid FogHat was right, "Slow Down".  I hate it, but, hey.

Re: Quotes from Game Post Rating (1 vote)

Memo to JJ and Doc, if we were playing , YES we would get tired. These are 20 year old kids, you think they get tired right at the 35 minute mark! Horse crap, when I was 20 I NEVER got tired. I didn't see anyone tired in Reno, and I didn't see anyone tired in Hawaii; however. I did see a team that was dominating until Andy started milking the clock. If a 20 year old kid can't play hard for 20 minutes. He is not in shape. If Yeager was tired, he sure didn't show it after the phantom foul. Also, I don't see anyone on the team bending over grabbing their shorts which is a sure sign of fatigue. I say it is a cop out to say this team gets tired, just like it is a cop out to say we lost it because of bad calls. We lost it because of missed free throws, layups, and milking the clock.

Re: Quotes from Game Post Rating (2 votes)

Rufus you are an idiot...If I have ten 20year old men against your six 20 year old men who do you think would win? You simply amaze me with your over the top nonsense...The guys on this board may be use to it but what you just said makes no sense. Any novice basketball fan can see this but you... C'mon man stop the silly talk and be realistic..I thought you played this game...When you coach kids you tell them to not bend over and grab your shorts because the opposition will see fatigue...Just because they don't show it does not mean they are not tired...When you are out there on the floor for ten minutes and then the man you are guarding sits down and they bring in another fresh guy for ten minutes you don't think you will get tired...I might leave this board because I am tired of typing these long paragraphs...I can't beleive I am explaing this concept to you...

Re: Quotes from Game Post Rating (1 vote)

JJ, let me explain this to you. If you practice fast, and play fast, while other teams play slow, the other teams 10 men will be dragging, not your six men. Look at the Oregon football team, they practice faster than they play, and they simply tire other teams out. Just don't buy it. I never got tired playing basketball.

Re: Quotes from Game

Have you been to other teams practices? Is Oregon playing for the national title? You really need to stop. I got tired when I played... You did not get tired because you did not work hard or you did not play much...LOL

Re: Quotes from Game

I never got tired, either Roof.  Those nutters kept you awake.  Those elaborate shuffles, pick and rolls, handoffs (for God's sake!) and other stylized plays allowed you to stand around for a few minutes every possession watching the guys on the other side of half court make their moves.

In other was a totally different game, old man.

Re: Quotes from Game Post Rating (1 vote)

JJ, since you are a newbie to Big West basketball, I'll cut you some slack for the name calling. First, this is the Big West, nobody is 10 deep. Second, I'll take a supposedly tired Seely, Vaughn, or Yeager against any 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th or 10th man; it would not even be fair. Third, those three are better than the majority of the starters for other BW teams. Four, at CSUF, we rarely have enough players to hold good practices. Fifth, if we don't run and play hard for 40 minutes, we will get killed because we have no size or defensive stopper in the paint. If you got tired at the age of 20 playing a game, you didn't get tired from playing hard, you were just out of shape.

Re: Quotes from Game

Doc, did UNLV get tired? Did LMU get tired? Give me a break, old men get tired.

Posted: 01/05/2013 2:03 PM

Re: Quotes from Game

I should just troll you out, you are being so foolish, Mike.

But here goes:  UNLV had depth out every orifice.  People remarked that LMU's high trap on D was a virtual rest period for them.  They either stole the ball quickly or you got the shot off.

Other than the special case of LMU, the game was much slower even 15-20 years ago.

Re: Quotes from Game Post Rating (1 vote)

Doc, you try to make the game to difficult. If you are short, and athletic, you make teams play to your tempo. You tire them out, by letting them rest, they will overpower you. You have to run them until they are sucking air, you might be tired(if you are out of shape like JJ and yourself), but the guys not used to playing at that tempo will be more tired.

While name-calling is one of the lowest forms of argument, I'm gonna have to award JJ a point here because Rufus rarely shows it when he gets rattled.
