McClellan Not Granted Hardship Status
I have been told that Steve McClellan posted on his Facebook page that he was denied hardship status for this season by the NCAA.
Well, there it is. We will play with the cards that we currently have. GO TITANS!

Huge loss. Hopefully one of the walk-ons can step up and give s some minutes. I still like what I saw of Chris Collins and Jordan Knox.

So did he lose his junior year? Does he still have a redshirt year?

Re: McClellan Not Granted Hardship Status (1 vote)
I am not sure about this, but I think he would be a RS Junior for 2013-14.
I hope Darius Nelson can have a full recovery sooner than anticipated. Right now, we are fielding an 8-men rotation with 3 point guards, 4 wings and 1 forward. Everyone, from the coaches to the last player on the bench need a higher basketball IQ. Even then, we probably need help from the refs.

Re: McClellan Not Granted Hardship Status
We really have about a 7 1/2 man rotation; however, they all have good basketball IQs. They are also very athletic, quick, and we have three seniors that can really play their asses off. We play smart and play at a hectic pace, most teams will not like playing at our tempo. We also have a HC that knows his team and has their respect. We will be more than competitive, and will win more often than we lose.

Re: McClellan Not Granted Hardship Status
We have the 4 guard team with some other guy standing in the paint to foul anybody that gets close to a layup. Eventually the other guy fouls out and then we put in another guy who fouls the same way. It may work to get us wins. Yet in the long run we still need to play interior defense vs. good teams. Stanford easily exposed that and we went from 4 up to a 13 point loss.

Re: McClellan Not Granted Hardship Status (1 vote)
I think you just said what I really meant to say.
In other words, we hope we would be playing against teams with low basketball IQ all the time...teams like Long Beach State! Even then, we probably need some help from the refs to keep our players on the court.
We are not going to win a rebounding battle with most DIV I teams so we would have to take care of every possession.

Re: McClellan Not Granted Hardship Status
Nothing against Hicks, but we would be undefeated if the school didn't suspend Newman. Our speed, quickness and tempo negates size. Our three guards can dominate, and above all - we can actually play defense.

Re: McClellan Not Granted Hardship Status
I did not see the Nevada game but you may be right Roof. I thought Hicks really struggled with game management in the second half @ Stanford. Falling victim to the Bob Hawking rule of waiting for the TV timeout while the ship is sinking.
This said, we gave up 18 offensive rebounds to GB. We beat them because we shot the lights out from 3.

Re: McClellan Not Granted Hardship Status
No, we beat them because we were quicker and more athletic. Yes, we gave up 18 offensive rebounds; however, not many teams are going to have a frontline that goes 7'1", 6'10" and 6'9". Another key factor in the win against is that we made their point guard a no factor, with our size at guard. Our only problem is can we survive a whole season playing 7 and 1/2 guys.

I think this was the main reason for the win. Against teams like GB or Nevada we are going to live and die by the outside shot. There are certainly upcoming games where this wont be true but now that we are officially sans McClellan this is going to hold true for more games than I was hoping for.
Man, what I wouldn't give to get John Underwood back right now. We have now lost our three best post players and we weren't exactly deep at the positions to begin with. With my job on the line I would have to rethink red shirting Mikey Williams right now.

Maybe someone more versed in this can help me. Is there any possibility of getting a JC transfer starting the spring semester (ie available in December)?

Re: McClellan Not Granted Hardship Status (1 vote)
I was thinking exactly the same about the post players. I can only imagine about what this team is capable of doing if we have Givon Crump, Darius Nelson, John Underwood and Steven McClellan.
With that said, I do not think Mike Williams is the answer. We probably can win an additional one, maybe two close games, max with Mikey. It will not change the fact that other will teams wil try to exploit the lack of depth on our frontline.
On the court, this team needs to figure out the genius of Rufus: The key is to outscore the other team.
We are not going to win most of the rebounding battles and there would be many times when a rebound that should be ours would be converted as an extra field goal for our opponent.

Re: McClellan Not Granted Hardship Status
That is an interesting question.
If the NCAA allows this, is there a Fullerton transfer rules that would make this not possible.

Is it also possible to add a walk-on in a similar situation?

Re: McClellan Not Granted Hardship Status (1 vote)
Here is my take from the outside looking in...I have watched Darius and Steve since they were in the 6th grade...They are not post players by definition...Darius is more of a wing player a scorer...Steven and Deuce are similar at what they do in my opinion they are almost twins in style of play...I did not see much difference in what they do in the scrimmage...I do not know much about John but when a guy quits playing basketball you have to wonder could you really count on him when you need him...I wish him the best...Crump was a reach academically but he was the stud of the group. Saw him in high school during aau circuit...You have to live with what you got...

Re: McClellan Not Granted Hardship Status (2 votes)
Even if by luck McClellan got the nod to play, it would not have changed the fact that we are lacking depth at the frontcourt. The significance of that ill-fated decision is worth five additonal fouls for us to contest field goals.
Right now, any opposing coaching-staff with half the basketball IQ should smell blood immediately after Horne or Deuce is called for his 2nd foul early in the game. Just like in any game we have played so far, the other team would just send wave after wave of their offensive players to the paint to take that open lane, or draw the body contact from our frontcourt players. That means our perimeter players have to foul when they get beat on a screen, or the at-risk front court helper just allow the driving player an open look.
As Rufus would like to say, the key is to outscore the other team. It is a lot harder to do it when the other can get their will around the paint. Again, it is not because Horne and Johnson cannot play defense. They are just less effective when they get the 3rd or 4th foul while the winner of the game has not been decided.
The good news is that Deuce Johnson, Jared Brandon, Sammy Yeager, Kwame Vaughn and DJ Seeley are all excellent FT shooters. Alex Harris and Marquis Horne are above average. I think we can try to manafacture points at the FT line. We should look to get 10 more points from additional FT attempts. I think Sammy Yeager, Jared Brandon, Deuce Johnson are shooting less FT than optimum and should be looking for the shooting foul.

Re: McClellan Not Granted Hardship Status
True...Keep in mind that we do not have many Wisconsin GB teams on the schedule...We were outrebounded by 7 to Stanford, 2 to Nevada and won the S. Utah boards match up...As a team we rebound well..We need to do a better job on the defensive boards...Offensive boards our "bigs" will have a hard time because we shoot alot of threes...Missed threes are long rebounds...
