Newman Suspended for 2 Games

Newman Suspended for 2 Games

This official release just came out:

Newman Suspended For Titans' First Two Games

FULLERTON, Calif. -- Cal State Fullerton interim head men's basketball coach Andy Newman has been suspended for the Titans' first two games of the season due to secondary violations of NCAA rules, Interim Athletics Director, Steve Walk announced Tuesday.

He will miss Fullerton's season opener at Stanford on Nov. 12 and the team's game at Nevada on Nov. 16 to open the three-day Basketball Travelers Tournament in Reno. Assistant Coach Julius Hicks, in his fifth season with the program, will run the team in his absence.

"As the men's basketball coach at Cal State Fullerton, I take full responsibility for the program's compliance with NCAA rules," Newman said. "The University has reported minor secondary violations that were committed, unintentionally, with respect to my presence at a summer open gym before play began, and my failure to supervise our Director of Basketball Operations who was present at the open gym program.

"I will serve the suspension and then return to the team with a redoubled commitment to compliance and success for our student-athletes, both on and off the court. I will be sure that, moving forward, the men's basketball staff will continue to work with the highest levels of integrity set forth by Cal State Fullerton and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics."

"We are dedicated to sustaining an atmosphere of compliance with NCAA rules in our programs,"  Walk stated.

My take:  A two game suspension seems awfully harsh for a minor secondary violation such as this.  In fact, I would think it was unprecedented.  Could it be that our interim A.D. or compliance personnel went too far due to their inexperience?

It appears that Coach Newman is taking the suspension like a man, and taking responsbility for his apparently unintentional actions.

I can say this:  I was at open gym over the summer, and I can say with 100% certainty that Coach Newman was never in the gym when play was going on.  I was under the impression that was the only restriction.  Perhaps I am wrong?  It appears he is being suspended for being in the area BEFORE open gym began.  I'm not sure that I have ever heard of anyone being suspended for something like that before.

Remember when Jim Calhoun was given a 3-game suspension for NUMEROUS RECRUITING VIOLATIONS.  This hardly seems to merit the same treatment.

Re: Newman Suspended for 2 Games

1.  How can one's presence at a gym be unintentional?  Was he walking to the men's room, took a wrong turn, and found himself in the gym by accident?

2.  These are self-imposed penalties.  Wait until the NCAA gets done with us.  They will view us as a repeat violator given the earlier sanctions.

3.  The interim tag is going to be impossible to shake now.

I agree. There is NO way Dr. Walk is going to get the AD position now.

I am sure I will have a lot more to say about this as the details come out but, man, how are people (Dr. Walk, compliance person -- who the heck is this anyway??) able to make such decisions without thinking this through and making a sound decision? These are secondary violations -- if they were even violations in the first place. No one that I know of has ever received a two-game suspension for such a minor infraction.

Really sounds like someone has too much time on their hands or want to make their mark before they are booted out. I am beyond stunned right now.

This could either go away and Walk gets his mark on the program in before he's ousted or this could really blow up in the school's face with lawsuits, media coverage, etc.

Why two games?

Who's buttocks did Walk pull that number from?

"The University (i.e., Dr. Walk and the compliance person) has reported minor secondary violations that were committed, unintentionally, with respect to my presence at a summer open gym before play began."

Could be wrong, but I take this to mean that the Dir of Ops did something very minor, if even an infraction and now the head coach is the fall guy and serves an unprecedented two-game suspension??

I've talked to a few people in the know and the rule is you can't be in the gym during open gym, but no issues before and after. So he was never at the gym, let's make that perfectly clear. The more I think about this the more I agree with Kirk, though he said it much more politely than I will.

Either they (see above) are complete idiots and/or have a vendetta against coach Newman, or they are just inexperienced and incompetent. Either way, someone should be held accountable... and where is our president to make sure stupid decisions like this don't get made?

I am assuming that it least some of these comments are tongue in cheek.  However, I will attempt to respond.

1.  His very office is in historic Titan Gym.  It's kind of hard not to be nearby.  If he had supervised or even attended open gym, I could more easily understand the suspension.  Hell, I would have told him to get the heck out of there if I had seen him.  Bottom line:  He wasn't in HTG when play was going on.  I was there.  I can state that fact.

2.  I really don't anticipate any additional penalties from the NCAA.  In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they considered them harsh.

As far as earlier sanctions, I don't think they'd still hold the 1999 sanctions against us.

3.  I sincerely hope that you are incorrect.  Let him prove his worth this season.  Talk to the players after the season to see how things went.

Ultimately the new A.D. will be making that decision.  I have heard that prelimary interviews have already begun taking place with about 10 candidates.  Hopefully the new A.D. can be in place prior to the start of the second semester.

hey, perhaps Dr. take-a-Walk should foot some of the blame as well. Wasn't he near or in the gym when the open gym games were being played?

And how come we are the only school in the country that can't have open gyms?

Kirk, I told you how I felt at the baseball clinic. Andy will get the job if he finished .500 or better. This is not even an infraction worth mentioning. 2 games is ridiculous but it is the NCAA rule.

I will not have you speaking ill of Dr. Walk.  He is a respected, preenema scholar.  He teaches such important courses as History and Philosophy of Human Movement, Advanced Philosophical Perspectives of Human Movement, and Advanced Sociocultural Perspectives of Human Movement.

Any Tom, Dick or Harriet can bend over.  But very few people can explain why they bend over.

Re: Newman Suspended for 2 Games

This is 100% a Cal State Fullerton decision. This is not an NCAA rule whatsoever. In fact, Cal State Fullerton is self-imposing a suspension for a minor secondary infraction and this has never been done before in the history of college basketball. And I have heard that Cal State Fullerton and Dr. Take-A-Walk never even bothered to contact the NCAA to determine what an appropriate punishment should be.

PaulSectionJoseph, give me and us a break!!!

Those are great references for a college professor. But that has NOTHING to do with his ability to be a Division One Athletic Director. Lack of experience in that chair is center to what TC is making a point about. This seems to indicate that Dr. Walk is no Neil Stoner!!

I met Dr. Walk at the B&W scrimmage and he seems a smart guy and a nice guy as well. Someone I wouldn't mind getting to know over beer.

But to be honest he seemed a scholarly square peg pushed into trying to fit into an Athletic Director round hole. Common sense, it's less about educated smarts and much more about street smarts to be qualified to sit in the AD chair. Unfortunately, under short notice it seems we only had an educated smarts guy available to the temporary gig.

TC, this place ain't called Idiot City College for nuthin'.

As the late, great Gene Murphy put it, "at Fullerton, your own people work against you".

I hope Andy's fate is in his own capable hands.

Around this insane place... Who knows?
