Re: Joey Meyer Story
I wanna say i respect the hell out of joey, i really do. His father is DePaul basketball and without him we would not be sitting on a message board 26 years after he coached his last game talking DePaul hoops. My view of joeys last days at DePaul are different then some. Some say he was ''pushed'' out by bradshaw and others feel joey should of been fired. Either way i still for the life of me dont understand why joey has never got another college job or a decent NBA job of some sort. Now some will say he passed up some chances in the 90s, but still. Its been over 15 years since he last coached at DePaul and i cant remember his name being brought up for any jobs. Its weird.

Now some of you young cats will say thats no big deal now, but at the time it was huge. DePaul was going to the torney almost every season from 78-92. So i wouldnt say he got a ''raw'' deal. But there are some that feel that way. Im not one of them.I felt at the time and still do to this day that it was time to move on and let joey go.

RE: Joey Meyer Story
Bubba, it very well might have been time for the program to take a different direction when they did with Joey, but if you think he received 1/10th the amount of support that PK did when he arrived, you would be kidding yourself. The administration and athletic department failed Joey a helluva lot more than Joey failed the program.
Joey had his flaws no doubt. But he still was the lead recruiter for Ray's great teams and history may very well have been very different if Fields made it DePaul.
I'm sure Joey could have coached a low D-1 program after he left... but I can understand completely if his heart wasn't into starting from scratch at a school you have no emotional ties too... especially coming from a situation where you practically grew up at a school.

Joey Meyer is the best coach DePaul ever had, including his father.....and a great player himself....just like his father.

RE: Joey Meyer Story
When I say he got a raw deal, I mean the administration at the time basically sabotaged any attempts by Joey to keep the program top twenty, because of a falling out with Bradshaw. He wasn't given the support he needed to succeed because they wanted him to fail.

We really miss Joey Meyer. He is an absolute class act and one of our favorite coaches that we have ever had the pleasure of being around.

Bubba, you're looking at the symptom without understanding the cause. I'd take Joey today.

RE: Joey Meyer Story
Agreed. Growing up my friends used to make fun me/him. "Who is this nerd coaching DePaul?" "He looks like he should be a professor or something."
I loved him. I always felt that he would have died for DePaul to win. You could see the agony in his face those last years. I always felt really bad for him. He aged 20 years during that time.
I too can't believe he got (or accepted) another crack.
I also can't believe he is 61

I am another Joey fan. I loved the guy. I am probably one of the few here who is older than he is. I do think there were other factors than lack of support from the administration. The alienation of CPS coaches happened during Joey's time, didn't it?

Ray was the all around better coach and its not even close. Ray built a monster of a program and handed it to joey. The rest is history. As soon as the ray meyer effect wore off joey didnt do much. Joeys best years were his first four. After that he didnt do much. Joey needed to be fired when he was. Las, I know all about the bradshaw-joey drama. It still doesnt change my view on this subject.

What about what happened with Teddy Grubbs? I think that was his name. Didn't the CPL just shut them out after that whole fiasco.

RE: Joey Meyer Story
Bubba,
I will politely disagree with you on this one.
Joey did need to go due to many reasons: CPL coaches, Illini $$$, bad record in the last few years, ESPN exposure taking over, etc.
But he was the main reason we recruited those great players and his Xs and Os kept us in many games that we had no business being in.
Our family seats were 6 rows behind DePaul's bench at Alumni Hall and several further back at AA....and I witnessed first hand the impact Joey had with those teams.
I truly love Ray Meyer as much as any DePaul fan but......
Sorry and no disrespect.

Re: Joey Meyer Story
If you look at it on the surface and just look at his record, sure.
But, look at the circumstances that led up to the bad record and his firing.
Many people point to the public league relationship as the cause.
To me, the death knell was when the administration told Meyer and his staff they couldn't recruit off campus. That restriction led to crappy recruiting classes. The crappy recruiting classes led to the bad record.
Mike freakin' Krzyzewski or just about any coach would have failed with those kind of restrictions placed on him.
And Bubba, since you have so much respect for Coach Ray, then by the same token you also have to respect Coach Ray's feelings on the subject. Ray saw what was happening, he knew the real truth, and he spoke his mind on what happened. He sure didn't think Joey deserved it.

Re: Joey Meyer Story
Why did they say Joey and staff couldn't recruit off campus?

Re: Joey Meyer Story
It was one of the self-imposed penalties the administration placed on Meyer after the Jeff Tassani scandal.

I'm with LS and Dave on this. Some of our worst disappointments were late game meltdowns under Ray's tenure. Not many will agree with this but honestly I couldn't stand his coaching. By comparison, Joey was great in making the most of his team's talents, and yes, he was at the core of amazing recruiting classes. What happened to him was hugely shaped by very unusual circumstances (including the administration's spineless no-confidence non-support) coupled with a boatload of bad luck.
