Re: DePaul vs. St. John's post-game
I will lay off the hating as I’ve done enough of that over the past few weeks and I’m sure others will take up the slack bemoaning what transpired down the stretch (coaching, refs, et al). Rebounding: 46-36 Adv DPU Free throws: 18/20 from the charity line. Nice efforts from Brandon and Moses. Melvin remained engaged in spite of the shots not falling… We somehow hung around while only forcing 5 turnovers? Please give this kind of effort the rest of the year gentlemen.

Power Staff
Someone on the POWER STAFF needs to tell World be Free to go to the basket instead of hoisting up a wild three. Take the two and foul.
Brutal coaching on both sides. One side has more talent and an assistant with a clue.

OP finally scraps the press and look what happens, DP almost wins the game. Lets hope OP continues this trend...

The 2-3 was effective. I'm a huge fan of the 1-3-1 but you don't put Melvin on the top of it, shoot he'd be better off in the middle and going super small rather then that

RE: DePaul vs. St. John's post-game
I actually thought Oliver had a decent coaching game. But we need to find an assistant to develop players Crockett has seriously regressed. Melvin's game hasn't made big jumps in his game it's disappointing to see how players have developed since they've arrived

Heard the last hour of the game driving home tonight from the bulls game. Same old script.

Re: DePaul vs. St. John's post-game
Positives: OP actually changed up on defense and it kept us in the game. Hope they keep working on this. The team played hard throughout the game. Morgan contributed.
Negatives: No inside presence on offense or defense.kirk is soft and not interested in mixing it up for a rebound. Offensive sets appeared ineffective against their zone. Couldn't penetrate and dish
Tim welsh continuously praised OP and DPU throughout the game.
We did play better.

Re: DePaul vs. St. John's post-game
I will say this for sure....
It was VERY refreshing to see Oliver Purnell actually attempt to coach this game.
Did he always make the right move? Not necessarily. But at least he made an adjustment by not pressing for 40 minutes. He went from man-to-man to zone to 1-3-1.
He came to play and at least we had a fun 45 minute game to watch.
I know its sad that I have to resort to just hoping we stay competitive but this was more along the lines of what I expected to see this year.
Signs of brillance on the wing and a whole load of problems in the paint.

Did Mush or anyone else notice that Kirk's and Obekpa's stats were virtually the same.

DID anyone else noticed that Obekpa is in his first year and Kirk will be a grad student next season.

Re: DePaul vs. St. John's post-game
Mush, CO is one of the worst offensive players in the Big East, freshman or not. I though Andre Brown was the worst FT shooter I would ever see. You live long enough...
I figured you would be more likely to say that OP wanted him so bad that it was evidence he's not that good.

Re: DePaul vs. St. John's post-game
Now that was funny. Obepka will be a good player still little raw but do STJ really need another offensive player ?

Re: DePaul vs. St. John's post-game
But he does something that Kirk and Robertson cannot, rebound and block shots. I would take him all day, challenges ofesnively or not, then waht we have. Just sayin'...

Re: ESPN NY story
St. John’s coach Steve Lavin opened his postgame news conference with praise for the Blue Demons, and coach Oliver Purnell. “That was the hardest any team has played against us,” Lavin said. “I’d say Georgetown and DePaul, to this point in the season, are the teams that played the hardest, just in terms of sheer effort. -------------------------------------------------- -------------
Very classy move by Coach Lavin but after the game Lavin was trying to tell Oliver that but he wanted no part. Shame on you Oliver.

Re: DePaul vs. St. John's post-game
I would take CO in a second. We are a completely different team with him in the paint. I don't care about offense. Re: DePaul vs. St. John's post-game
I agree. CO is going to be a very good player. He has incredible defensive presence. While he currently shoots free throws like a young Shaq, I believe that weakness can be improved more easily than fixing the opposite problem -- say hypothetically, improving an overly soft 6'9" upperclassman who can score 5-6 points a game but who are unable or unwilling to aggressively protect the paint.
We really got screwed in the Big Man Lottery.

Re: DePaul vs. St. John's post-game
They are only averaging 68 PPG, so I think they do need another offensive player. IMO, if SJ can get just 8-10PG out of Obekpa, we might see SJ migrate towards what they used to be -- a top-20 team. mush1745 wrote: Now that was funny.
