Joey Meyer (in tthe house today)

Joey Meyer (in tthe house today)

The smartest thing JLP could have done today was to ask Joey Meyer
if he would be interested in coming back to Depaul. I take him back in
a heartbeat.

- Would generate fan interest again
- Would be a wonderful comeback story
- Love to see him coaching in the new arena (hopefully one day)
- The man can flat out coach and recruit
- Has to be better than our last two coaches (that includes our current one)

I'll bite. Joey was a good X's and O's coach.  He had no personality (not sure he was a great recruiter) but I can't take any more of this crap.

Re: Joey Meyer (in tthe house today)

Absolutely!  There is no doubt that JLP should give Joey his job back.  He's a great coach, very well respected by his peers.  I think a lot of college guys would want to play for him after his experiences in the D-League and getting to know exactly what it takes to make it to the NBA.  The Meyer tradition returns to Lincoln Park...that would be a great story that would generate some great national headlines.  He was one of the best coaches in College Basketball for many years...how he never got another head coaching opportunity in the College game is truly bizarre.  For developing NBA type players...he's probably even a better coach in that respect than he was when he left in '97.

Why was he at the game today?  Was it for T Greene?

I would assume for T Greene.

Heard Joey resides in Lincoln Park in the off season (read on the net not true
if he still does)? But I'm sure if the offer was given to him he might consider.

Mush,

I take Joey for the factor of 'generating some buzz' right now.

Could care less if he can tweet. If he can teach fundamentals and
defense he's ok in my book.

Leave the tweeting to Garrett Sr. if we keep him on staff. He's good at it.

Windy, I get your passion for the good old days but Joey is not the answer.  Either we hire a young dynamic coach like Memphis coach who learned from the best, or a proven winner  like Kelvin Sampson. Kelvin has street cred and now NBA cred as well. Save the money on search firms and listen to MUSH. No reason to pat me on the back, just listen...

There is a reason Joey never coached college after DePaul.

Please no More MUSHstakes!

Please beware. No more MUSHstakes! For those that have not already turned this man off - please do. He is vindictive. If you had any questions about his views, today's game made it clear. Lavin is a terrible Coach! Why would anyone consider advice regarding future coaching talent from someone who MUSHstakes flash for substance.

Re: Joey Meyer (in tthe house today)

The good old days were the good old days because of Joey Meyer.  We need someone who can flat out coach.  Joey can coach.  His teams were always prepared and played hard.  They pulled off tons of huge victories over big time programs.  Can he recruit?  Aguirre, Strickland, Edwards, Davis, Kleinschmidt, Brundy, Booth, Howard, etc...  Long list of players he recruited...all have good things to say about him too and say he was a great coach.  That should tell us everything.  DePaul has never had the type of national respect they had after Joey left.  Not even close.  Yes, they went through some rough years the last few years of his tenure.  He wasn't the main problem though.  Yes, they didn't have the best success in the NCAA tournament under Joey.  But look at the issues then and now.  He went to the post-season 10 out of his 13 years!  DePaul didn't think that was good enough because we had some bad luck in the NCAA tournament games.  What we would give now to have those same problems.  The way the current team is coached we can't even dream of making the NIT field.

Joey meant everything to DePaul.  If you disagree, just look at what has happened to this program after he was let go.  He was responsible for a lot of DePaul's greatness.

Re: Joey Meyer (in tthe house today)

It's a fun thought...Realistic not really but still a nice distraction from our current state of affairs. From a buzz standpoint at least within the city this might generate something for the first time since the Fat Pat days.

Biggest issues I'd see is A) No way JLP is conceding OP as a failure for quite some time yet. B) I bet Joey still has the skill set to be a quality coach; Recruiting, X's/O's, prepping guys for NBA. With that said, he is in his 60's and I'd wonder if he has the energy/desire/passion to dig in and try resurrecting this thing.

I basically concur with MUSH and others that whoever the next guy is has to be a young/dynamic recruiter. No more of these aging guys who are content getting a final contract out of us. I would be intrigued by Joey playing the kind of role that Gene Keady plays at St.Johns. Beyond that I would probably pass.

He 3 wins in a full season to end his career here? What is different now to make anyone think he would be better at getting recruits? His D League experience won't sell anyone that's why he's scouting now

Joey was a really good Coach.  But, maybe you're right.  Time has past.  I'd bet he'd make a good AD.  Especially, at a BB only school.

Demon2007:

What's the plan, you can't come here without a plan ? Maybe that's the problem, you don't listen very well. I have been saying for three years that this is not a good coach, he can't recruit, his record is a fake like Manti's girlfriend, and he can't develop kids to next level. 90% have come to their own conclusions that what Mush has been saying is all true. Now, the few like yourself needs to buy a clue and know how the game is played. Amature night at the Appolo is over bc that's what you are.

BTW:  I heard JLP called up the search firm and demanded a refund.

Re: Joey Meyer (in tthe house today)

While I liked Joey as a coach for many reasons, I would dispute that they always played hard especially in the last years. It seemed like teams like Georgetown, and especially Cincinnati intimated us and our press was always soft. I would give anything for guys like Kenny Patterson and Rod Strickland who took no sh*t either by their attitude or competitiveness.

Agree! If he was so good another college or university would have hired him. He's not and his time has past.
