Re: Guess who's next ?

Mush,

Lavin needs his shoes shined and hair grease ready by 10am on Saturday.

Make sure you set your alarm for 9am so you are available to him.

Re: Guess who's next ?

Windy,

That's ok, he wears sneakers so no need to have his shoe shined. Give credit were credit is due, we hired the wrong coach but most fans here are busy calling Perma Seal for their leaky foundations.
Just think they would have been wearing DPU blue.

Obekpa
Sir Pointer
Phil Green
Jakaar Sampson
DeAngelo Harrison
The Real Garrett

Oops...Obekpa blocked another one.

Re: Guess who's next ?

So what do you want to happen on Saturday?

If DePaul wins, it's good for the team you "support," but bad for your sense of self-righteousness and your theory that Steve Lavin is the second coming of Adolph Rupp (if not Jesus Christ himself).

If DePaul loses, the program you "support" takes another tough hit, but at least you get a little validation for your Lavin love (although beating OP doesn't really take a great coach, does it?) and a few more self-satisifed look-at-me posts to throw out to the handful of fans on this board, most of whom tuned you out long ago.

We all know where your head is - firmly up Lavin's a** - but where's your heart? What do you want to happen on Saturday?

One win or loss doesn't prove anything. The big picture tells the story and any honest look at the situation will show that Lavin is beating up on OP in every major evaluating criteria...... including the big one, total wins and losses!

Having only watched highlights of St John's, I think they're the type of team that depaul has the possibility to beat. I wouldn't be surprised with a win.

For what it's worth, if Lavin DID want to come here but was denied by JLP, then that is a terrible decision and you can add it to the list of long reasons why she should be fired.

Re: Guess who's next ?

Tcoop, why are you getting angry ? Lavin already proved all you fools WRONG. Lets face it, win or loss what Lavin did in one year at St. John is something Oops couldn't do in his lifetime. Excuse me but Obekapa just blocked another one.

So lets just enjoy our very few Ws in the Big East and near misses with recruits. I'm sure better days are near.

No anger - it was actually a serious question (and one you have yet to answer).

Nice hedge, though - "win or lose, I was right." At least you're not predictable.

Re: Guess who's next ?

What I really don't understand about you Mush is your full on man crush on Steve Lavin? From reading your posts you'd think Lavin was Coach K or John Calipari. Ill admit I'm starting to think Oliver isn't the answer either but the absolute praise of all things Lavin makes you look a little strange.

Do you know what I want Mush? I want this administration to sack up go out and make Bruce Pearl an offer he can't refuse. Steve Lavin is not the answer. Let me say that again...Steve Lavin is not the answer. I don't think Oliver is the answer either but why call for Lavin? You dont call for someone like Bruce Pearl, Steve Fisher etc. you call for STEVE LAVIN? the man who was fired at UCLA and has 1 good year at SJU.

Do NOT think I am defending Oliver I'm just trying to understand why you think Steve Lavin is one of the premier coaches in college basketball? Because he is not.

RE: Guess who's next ?

I will concede that absolutley so far Lavin would have been the better hire then Oliver. No doubt, and I am also not denying that if JLP said no to Lavin she needs to be fired. But even if Lavin is the better choice then Oliver, there are alot better choices out there then Steve Lavin...

I'll defend mush here.... he is taking the correct position because, yes, win or lose on Saturday, Lavin is still the winner so far. You don't judge anything on the result of one game. How many games did Phil Jackson lose to awful coaches in his career? (not comparing phil to lavin in anyway, just proving a point). You have to look at the complete picture. So, yes, Saturday is nothing special. I would argue the home opener was a MUCH, MUCH bigger game.

But it's a marathon and not a sprint, maybe OP can bounce back in the last half of his contract term....... maybe.....

Re: Guess who's next ?

Lavin is a Calipari wannabe....AKA dirt bag who pushes boosters($$$)to help the recruiting process.
So glad he did not come here.
Like Pat Kennedy, he can recruit but gets out coached every game.

This was exactly the response I was about to type up to your post biggrin biggrin

Would Lavin have been a better hire than OP? You have the correct answer with YES. So now the question becomes, why wasn't he hired? I agree that people can be over the top with praise sent his way, but in the end, the basic position that he was the better hire cannot be debated.

Lavin is not a miracle worker, but he would have made for the better coaching hire and would have better positioned depaul to land recruits and to compete for ncaa tourney wins. And because of that, I will defend mush and his posts about Lavin. It's such a no-brainer decision to me that I don't want to believe he was turned away. It just doesn't make sense and boggles the mind a bit.

It's a similar position that I take with the new mccormick arena discusion. Will a new arena in the McCormick area work miracles to turn around this struggling program? No. But is it a better option than the AllState? Yes. So I will defend it, especially if a worse option is being pursued.

Re: Guess who's next ?

Put me on the Bruce Pearl to DePaul bandwagon for the time being. I think Bruce has learned from his mistakes and is looking for a shot at redemption and is eligible to coach in college next season. We have been awful...it's a great match. Bruce was horizon league coach of the year 3 times and SEC coach of the year 2x as well as national coach of the year in 2008. Yeah he has a questionable track record...but so did John Calipari. Sign me up "Pearl to DePaul" (I'm aware that him coming here is beyond unlikely but a man can dream)

Re: Guess who's next ?

I'm against Bruce Pearl. Our leader needs to be someone respectable and can win. There's no reason to try and win if your only going to have the NCAA haunt you.

Pearl will have to wait

as I think he is still under sanctions for a couple of years.

However, since the existing contract goes out for another 4 years, another two from OP are all but guaranteed, unless he retired first.

You'll have to take someone with some baggage if the current status is the same in a couple years, even if there is a new arena.

I was wrong on Gillespie, but I would vote for Pearl if the topic came up. Even if it is only a stepping stone for a guy to prove he has cleaned up, so what take the chance to turn the ship around here in the process.

RE: Guess who's next ?

I would love Pearl and I say pay him what he wants, but I doubt he would want to come here. DePaul is sort of viewed as an anti-Semitic institution (see Norman Finkelstein).

Re: Pearl will have to wait

I disagree that we would have to take a flawed hire next. Assuming we raise $100 million t build and pay our share of the stadium, you would have to expect our budget for the next coach wouldn't decrease but only be larger. New stadium , lots of mney and a great conference and you should be able to land a top coach.

Last post for me on this thread, because it's pretty clear that I'm not going to get what I was after - that is, a simple answer from Lavin's PR agent as to whom he wants to see win the game on Saturday.

I'm not an idiot. I fully agree that the outcome of that game will not put to rest the debate on the merits of Lavin v. OP (in my defense, I'm not sure I ever suggested that). But Mush's penchant for beating this dead horse like Art Long beat a live one has more than once inspired fans on this board to question whether he even wants to DePaul to win, or whether he would prefer that the program continue to slide just to prove his hamfisted points.

So I thought Saturday presented a good litmus test - would he rather have a DePaul win and a slight repudiation of his mantra, or a DePaul loss and another chance to pat himself on the back for being so much smarter than everyone else?

Maybe he's still thinking it over, but I doubt it. Better to spend this time readying his next classic tagline - Oops, I think we've heard most of this before.

A new stadium which likely has a subsidy for construction does not yield donors/ ticket holders per se. No reason to think the budget would expand because of a new stadium.

Re: Pearl will have to wait

There's no man crush on Lavin. Just pointing out that we missed the boat, when we had the chance to hire him and it so happens that he brings his young team to All State.  You will get to see first hand what a Big East roster looks like. His only problem is that some of his kids will leave for NBA.   Numbers don't lie.

Next coach will be Steve Alfred. Please save the drama about Pierce crap. THis is about winning and making money. Our program is on life support...

Although I would love to have Memphis coach or even Reggie Theus.
