Smith was my first guess. Always go with your first impression kids.

This was a home run.  Ray Anderson in just a few months on the job has simply been amazing.  We are incredibly lucky to have him.

Here's his twitter page. Presumably he'll get a new one, given the handle.

Re: BOOM! Smith to ASU!!

1998-2005 HC at Miami of Ohio
Won 30 or more games every year and twice won 40 games with two regional appearances.

2006-2014 HC at Indiana
from 2008 on:

2008 31-30
2009 32-27 Regionals
2010 28-27
2011 30-25
2012 32-28
2013 49-16 finished 5th in the CWS
2014 44-17 #4 national seed made Regionals

You have to remember when looking at this how bad both these schools were before he arrived.  Taking Indiana to Omaha is like taking UofA or Indiana to the Rose Bowl in football.    Think of what this guy can do at ASU with his ties to So Cal recruiting and all the resources of Muni and ASU history.  WOW!!!!  I am so damn happy

Re: BOOM! Smith to ASU!!

Well Smith made with bonuses over $300K at Indiana so ASU probably gave him at least $400K with bonuses I would guess.    He is leaving his kid who plays football at IU too.

IU has 5 players on its roster from California for those wondering about his ties to the West Coast, he has very good ties according to Aaron Fitt of BA.com

Great hire. I was going to be a bit disappointed with someone like Lee of CofC, this is huge. Great job

Definitely more than $245,000 wink

Re: BOOM! Smith to ASU!!

I'm sure Lee will do great things, but going scoreless in the Super regional against a so so Texas Tech team didn't help the overall impression.

Re: BOOM! Smith to ASU!!

Good article on Smith prior to the IU-Stanford games a couple of weeks ago. Personality-wise, sounds like a good mix between pants on fire Murphy and laid back Esmay.

"Moreso than any other coach I've ever covered, Smith has a talent for being blunt and straightforward, but also even-keeled. He doesn't have a problem being frank, but I also can't remember a single moment where I felt like emotion was dictating what he said.

I've interviewed the man after walk-off wins, blowout losses, bench-clearing brawls and Big Ten titles; amid season-saving winning streaks and season-crippling losing streaks; and the one thing that he never seems to do is lose his composure."

Sounds a lot like Pat Casey. Great hire by Ray. Monte lee is going to be a good coach somewhere but this was the best hire, at least top 5 on the wish list for college coaches. Yule log will be Burning tonight gents. Cheers to Ray and the winning that will ensue over the next decade.

Re: BOOM! Smith to ASU!!

Everything you hear about this guy is awesome.  This is a great hire and I think he will instantly hit the recruiting trail to finish this 2015 class off in style.  In another thread it was pointed out he had a player from Arizona on his team last year in addition to all the California kids he has had.    Its starts with getting the right kids and then improving them through coaching which Esmay was not doing.
