Monte Lee current leader for HC position

@KendallRogersPG: Hearing from sources in Arizona that #CofC's Monte Lee is the leader in that coaching search. Decision early/mid next wk. #ASU #ArizonaState

@KendallRogersPG: #ASU has had a rather interesting search. Also was told the interview process has had some diverse set of names.

What does it mean to be "the leader". Did he het the highest score on the written test? Silly statement. I seriously doubt that Rogers is that tied into our athletic department to know what is going on

Maybe not, but he does have MANY baseball connections... Plus the fact the day after he interviews Metcalfe tweets out to expect a hire next week. Sounds like it is Lee to me. If it is, I'm on board, and excited to see what he can do here!

I would be happy with Lee, but if it is him, why wait until next week to make an announcement

Re: Monte Lee current leader for HC position

Sounds like we have had a broad range of targets we looked at meaning minor league coaches, assistant coaches, big fish names and little fish names and medium fish names and maybe a former coachbiggrin.    Would not surprise me in the least bit if Monte Lee is hired.  Not sure why many were against him when we had that poll the guy had 6 great seasons at a small school with little resources and made 3 Regionals and a Super Regional.   Making a Super at a tiny azz school like Charleston is a good accomplishment.   Maybe the big fish cost to much?   Maybe Ray wants a young guy who will coach for 30 years?   Next week we shall know for sure but if it is Monte Lee I will be happy, the guy has 6 solid years of winning as a HC and has post season success.

Ray Anderson is up in the white mountains this weekend since yesterday so that could explain the wait till next week or also a guy Like Schlossnagle was not available until today to interview so with Ray gone up north he has to wait till Monday just to interview Schlossnagle.

Local station in SC confirming it...

@Teddy_Heffner: @KendallRogersPG also saying what we told you on TalkingSports: Monte Lee is the leading candidate at Arizona State. #560theteam

@Teddy_Heffner: Another thought on Monte Lee and Arizona State: C of C will not go quietly into the night. The Cougars will do their best to keep Lee.

What could a school like that pay?  Would they match an ASU offer of $300K or more plus incentives?   That is an awful lot for a school that draws 1,000 fans per game on a good day.

@jeffmetcalfe: College of Charleston's Monte Lee still is in play for #ASU baseball job ... can't say for certain it will end up that way next week

@thefantom81: @jeffmetcalfe interviewing bigger names next week?

@jeffmetcalfe: @thefantom81 no i don't think so

Spay,
where have you heard that ASU is willing to pay $300k?  As far as I can tell the facts are

1) We were paying Esmay $150k
2) The only interview we've heard of was a young coach at a lower level program that only makes $110k
3) Sources close to the CoC are going to try and counter
4) The CoC coach is tweeting like the ball is in his court
5) Media in ASU says a decision will be announced next week

Honestly, it sounds like we're looking to spend about $175k

Re: Monte Lee current leader for HC position

Monte Lee is not tweeting anything, his last tweet was June 16th.  Charleston media is tweeting.  Also From what I gather from AZcentral article from 2013 and Metcalfe article this week we were paying Esmay $200K.  He got half of that which was $100K when he got fired.  TT I did not say WE WERE GOING to pay $300K  I said we could triple his salary which would be around $300K.  You are a huddle member also so you know what Hod said about $$$$$$$$ not being an issue in some of our threads in the huddle.

That was an interesting tweet by Metcalfe about not bigger names being interviewed then Lee.

Esmay's base salary was $146k. He received an additional $50k for media appearances.

Great points Devil Law. I have the impression

that there is no leader at this point and that Mr Anderson is still doing his due work/up to learning all he needs to know on possibles for the job.

Devil Law. I am sure that Mr Anderson is doing

a really thorough job in the search for the next baseball coach.  I am also sure that at least one of the other interviewees (is that a word?) is a lot bigger name then the coach from CofC.  My thoughts are that if our AD decides that the coach from Charleston is the best man for the job, then that is what it will be.  My personal thoughts on the next coach have been made well known, but as I have said in other spots I know that the AD is not going to hire a guy just to please me or any one other individual.   He is going to hire the guy that he believes will get this program to where it was when Coach Winkles and Jim Brock were here.  I cannot be convinced that the level of excellence that marked those times is not obtainable in this era of college baseball.
My side of the business is signing a lot more of the better high school players then we used to sign.  To me that means that the really successful programs in college baseball are simply outrecruiting the other schools.  How does Indiana University have a lot better players then ASU.  Same with TCU or Texas Tech or Oregon State.  Indiana has done a great job of recruiting.  So has Louisville and Louisiana Lafayette.  Hard to convince me that if a young man is offered the same type of scholarship to Indiana, Oregon St or Louisville that the young man would pick those places over ASU.  But, they are not picking those places over ASU.  They are simply working harder then the ASU people have and recruited better players then ASU.
I believe that whichever coach Mr Anderson selects will stop that almost immediately and the Devils will once again be a preferred destination for the HS or JC recruit that is not going to sign directly out of high school.

It will be an upgrade over Esmay that is all that matters.

+1, ASU was missing out on TOO many of kids in the Valley that went to other schools. IE, The Cron brothers.  Not to say ASU didn't try or that they preferred to go somewhere else, it's just that Esmay was not held in high esteem as previous ASU baseball coaches.

The new coach has to put more of an emphasis on getting power and pitching support.

Have to give # ASU a ton of credit. Have done a terrific job with this coaching search. Very little information getting out for most part
