Monte Lee interviewing for the job

Monte Lee interviewing for the job

College of Charleston alum and also their head coach so not sure why he would have interest in ASU but Baseball America says we are interviewing him.  Here is his resume:

2014: 44-19 Super Regionals
2013: 31-26
2012: 38-22 Regionals
2011: 39-22
2010: 44-19 Regionals
2009: 35-22

Not a bad resume at all, not sure this would do much for the "WOW" factor or "Excitement" factor but he has a good resume that's better then Checkett's, Rodriguez or Meggs and he is very young in his late 30's.   Probably much cheaper to afford then the 'Big 3'.

    Would you be happy?

  1. Poll closed on 06/21/2014
  2. Yes I would like this hire: 35 votes
  3. No this is not good, I want a big fish: 37 votes

I said Yes. Because I'm happy. Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth. Because I'm happy....

Actually, that's premature. Let me think about it.

Re: Monte Lee interviewing for the job

I'm happy because RA is our AD. The fact he played college baseball goes a long way with me. He was smart enough to let Esmay go, he's smart enough to hire the right man for the job. RA has the opportunity to interview the candidates and find out more about the candidates than I will ever know.

Whoever RA hires will be good enough for me. RA is a very smart guy, I highly doubt he eff's this up.

Re: Monte Lee interviewing for the job

I still hope we land a bigger name guy but if we cant then this guy has a solid resume and he is very young so this would be a long term hire for several decades.   Was an assistant at South Carolina before this job and has won 30 games or more every year and 40 twice.   Under the age of 40 still, don't worry about no west coast ties this school recruits itself and he can keep Knuteson or hire an assistant with west coast ties.

I don't care about a NAME guy.
I want the right guy, and think RA knows how to get it done.

Re: Monte Lee interviewing for the job

here's an article about Lee interviewing for the job

http://www.postandcourier.com/...h-arizona-state

Lee's bio

http://www.cofcsports.com/View...;ATCLID=1505904

He was named the 6th best coach under 40 by Baseball America (UCSB's Checketts was #1)

6. Monte Lee, College of Charleston (Age: 35)

The Skinny: The first position player ever drafted out of CofC, Lee spent six years learning under Ray Tanner at South Carolina before returning to his alma mater as head coach and guiding the Cougars to two regionals in his first four years.

What They’re Saying: “I think the world of Monte. He’s a great coach, a great guy, a great recruiter, he works hard and he’s really well connected. Players love playing for him; he’s got a great temperament, and he’s a darn good hitting guy too. He was the hitting coach for some of those really good South Carolina teams. He’s very happy at the College of Charleston, it being his alma mater, but it would be smart of an AD in the ACC or SEC to hire him, because he’s a great one.”

—South Carolina coach Chad Holbrook

Roget that 29...he knows what he wants, knows what we need, and I have complete faith that he will accomplish this.

I have more confidence in RA making the right decision than any AD since Brock was hired

Re: Monte Lee interviewing for the job

Let's all remember that this is candidate one of hopefully many. He has a good resume and a young coach. He has a good record, but it's more going to be about how he can teach and lead the Devils. Hes not a west coast guy which would be preferred by most but if you're a good coach, you're a good coach.

Who will really make the decision?  Will the ASU president have a big say in the final decision????

Does anyone really know what RA will do in this situation?  Outside of playing  college baseball, I don't think we have anything to base our assumptions.

I hope RA makes a good decision, and I hope the president lets him make the call.  I don't know if these things will happen.

Monte Lee could start out like Murphy, and it could take him a few years to get a feel for how to recruit at ASU.  We will have to be patient, but it will be easier if he has an outgoing personality and if he shows passion and fire.

Re: Monte Lee interviewing for the job

This Lee guy is much more polished and has had more success then some of the names out there like Checketts or Meggs.    I still really want a crack at those 3 guys in Omaha.  At least get in a room with them and judge the interest level.

Re: Monte Lee interviewing for the job

Good point. The Official scorekeeper at Packard was a joke also, he'd go out of his way to give the opponents a hit and no error for Devil fielders as much as possible.

I guess on the bright side they're all better with much better resumes than the EZ

Thats bull shizzle.  ASU didn't fire  EZ  to be patient with a new coach.  Hell we were going to the regionals every year under Ez. to expect anything less then what Ez was doing is ridiculous.  The team has more then enough talent coming back to expect a good year in 2015, especially since everyone thinks that Ez(who coached the outfielders) and Benji (who was the infield coach) and Bordes were such bad coaches.

All this faith in RA is kind of curious beings as he has never been a ad, and played college baseball many many moons ago. Blind faith is not a good thing, see LL. I do have some confidence in RA. However  my confidence in him is because he worked in professional sports and his first two hires seem to be good.

If you want to call your program "elite" you can't pay like you are a run of the mill program.

Pony up the money RA and get a "elite" coach for a "elite" program please.

Re: Monte Lee interviewing for the job

I'm assuming that RA has a short list of candidates and he expects to interview several of them. Given his resume I can see why Lee is on anybody's short list. Impressive and a very young guy.

Like spay said the wrestling hire appears to be not a home run, but a grand slam given the immediate recruiting impact. So we need to wait this one out as well.

And like another said above, any of these guys would be a massive upgrade from Esmay.

Re: Monte Lee interviewing for the job

Yeah this team honestly should be your 2015 Pac12 pre season favorites, kind of like the softball team was this year only lets hope these kids do better with the new coach then the girls did.  Anyway we return most of the team

DH: Ybarra
C:  Serven
3B: Dinatale
RF: Allen
LF: Peevyhouse and Beall
CF: Sewald

Plus our closer and all 4 starting pitchers.

Re: Monte Lee interviewing for the job

What is it that would concern people about Monte Lee?  That would be the real question to ask because his record in 6 years as HC is pretty good and you have to remember it was at a tiny school.  His 2013 and 2009 teams would of made post season in a big conference.

I still want a crack at those 3 guys in Omaha and get an interview with them but Lee would be a fine 4th option if none of them panned out.
