2014 potentially HUGE news for ASU

2014 potentially HUGE news for ASU

Nomad pointed out that Micheal Benjamin, Trevor Allen, Case Coffman and recruit Seth Martinez all failed to make baseball America's top500 draft prospect list. The top 500 translates to the top 15 rounds of the draft. If your not a top 10 round pick your signing bonus cant exceed $100,000. Thats not enough to convince most college kids to leave. Now you get to round 15 your talking only $80,000 signing bonus. So potentially in 2014 all 4 could be at ASU. 2014 ASU potential lineup: DiNatale 1b, Stankeiwitz 2B, Woodhouse (name?) SS, Benjamin 3b, Allen rf, Coffman cf, Peevyhouse lf, Ybarra DH, Caussey C. Kellog, Burr & Lilek starting rotation. Es better friggin win with that lineup!! .......Wonder if that would cause guys like Sewald and Graybill to transfer??

Nomad did they say if MacDonald made the top500? I cant see any reason these guys would NOT come back next year if the best they can get is only $80,000 signing bonus. Why would you go pro for that? Comeback to ASU play great and you all would reallylly boost your draft stock. Man if Esmay is smart and want to remain employed he better keep at least a couple of these kids if they infact dont get drafted top10 rounds. 2014 could be huge!

This kind of concerns me a little bit.  I took pride in how highly thought of our players were.  We always had more players drafted than any other school.  There was a reason for that.  If our best players are not even considered in the top 500 anymore, well, that kind of pisses me off.

Yeah that part bugged me too but but we did have Williams, Rossiter and a couple high school recruits on the top 500. But they can all improve there draft status by returning and 2014 we could have 5 to 6 top ten round picks. I think defense is keeping Banjamin down and average keeping Coffman doWn. Regardless just think how potentially good we could really be next year with basically everybody back. Hell even Es probably couldnt screw that team up.

Of course the talent and recruiting drops off a bit when a team goes on probation-loses scholarships and gets banned from post season

talent level is fairly low compared to what we were used to 2002-2012. Benji/Allen/Coffman are nice role players, but we sorely lack the star talent in the #3, #4 holes in the lineup. Same thing for the mound. Williams was much better as a #2 and doesn't have the consistency or resiliency of a #1.

This team really lacks a leader. Stick a Larish at 1b and bat him 4th and it really makes a huge difference. Not only because we are missing that one solidifying bat (hell we bat Rossiter cleanup and he's hitting .280 with no homers) but also the leadership Larish provided.

This recruiting class isn't going to help much either. Peterson/Franklin won't make it here.  Martinez is a nice arm but we missed out on the local guys that would be difference makers. Probably one of the most blah recruiting lists I've ever seen at ASU

Re: 2014 potentially HUGE news for ASU

Yeah Esmay had three straight top5 recruiting classes then this year were barely top25 to out of top25. So is that a sign of the program falling under Esmay or is it the result of this being the final probation limited class?

You know benji is probably our best hitter in the lineup but my lord do I hate watching him play third base. Can we please find a new position for him and put Dalton over there.

I wonder where Benji will play in the pro's ? He is not a good defensive 3b. Maybe move him to first?

This year was always going to be an unusually small signing class because last years class was unusually large. I wouldn't look too much into the ranking of the class. Especially at this time since they will adjust their class after the draft to fill in some JC players once they know who they are losing

maybe a look in LF. Don't think he has the reactions to play anywhere in the inf at the next level

Looks like we added a pitcher to this class out of El Paso just last week.

Re: 2014 potentially HUGE news for ASU

If a player comes out and gets drafted after their senior year they get virtually nothing as a bonus. They have no leverage. They can go get a job like the rest of us, or sign for a hot dog / coke. Why would a pro franchise who owns a kids' rights pay him money to sign? Where's he going to play?

If somebody has free time go look at College Seniors who were drafted top 5-10 rounds and see what they signed for, im curious to see what they got. Trevor Allin can come back for 2 more years so he has leverage.

I could see him projecting well at 2b. I think he would be a better fit there with more time to react to the ball, plus he definitely has plus hitting tools for a 2b.

IIRC Jeff Larish had like 17 HR and 90 RBI his Soph year then had a huuuge fall off his Jr. year and came back for Sr. year and helped himself out.

asked my buddy that is involved with the club ball scene in Texas and he was surprised we offered this kid. Slight kid, about 6'0" and 150 pounds. Pitcher that only throws in the low 80s. Didn't have any offers from any of the big Texas schools.

Will most likely not be a contributor.

At this point any kid we sign for 2013-14 will not be an impact guy, they all signed a year ago

Sounds just like the type of pitcher who always seems to give ASU fits in the past--Lefty soft tosser--Eddie Delzer comes to mind. Besides--every club can always use a LOOGY--(left handed one out guy only)

Should look at the local JC kids after the draft
