First 3 games what do you want to see?

First 3 games what do you want to see?

3 bad opponents but 2 of them dangerously on the road.  That should help us be prepared for tough road games later on but what do you want to see in these first 3 games that we should win.

Weber (FCS)
@New Mexico (2-10)
@Colorado (4-8)

In each of the 3 games I would like to see ASU score more points than the opponent.

Well yeah but I would like them to drop at least 40 on all 3 teams and the guys on D to quiet all the naysayers and show that they at least will be decent enough for us to compete.  I still say this is an 8-4 to 9-3 team but the D wont be as bad as some think or trolls hope it will be.

ASU should score in the 60's vs Weber St, probably score in the 50's on the road against a horrible new Mexico team and come up with a solid road win in Colorado. The defense needs to grow up quick cuz UCLA comes to town after the Colorado game.

I'd like to see the defense play well in these first 3 games.

Re: First 3 games what do you want to see?

1) I want to see the load we're going to give Foster. Is he our 20+ carries per game RB? Or is he going to be around 12 touches with Lewis, Middlebrooks, and Ballage also getting carries?
2) I want to see with the increased size on the DL with guys like Latu, Cherry, Hood, Hardison etc being big boys if we ask them to suck up blocks and hold the point of attack, or if we ask them to split the gap like Sutton did.
3) If we do ask the DL to suck up blocks instead of penetrate, how much better will that make our LB's?
4) This is more for 2015, but I want to see how Lauderdale, Martinez, Ballage, and Jefferson etc play.
5) I want to see if we continue with the safe choice on returns, or if we go with speed, speed, and more speed!

I was being 90% sarcastic.  Thanks for your patience with me.biggrin

Honestly, I wouldn't mind any victory in which all of our players stay healthy.  It's a long season and we need to be ready for the gauntlet.  Unless we lose, we will not get any finess points, accolades or headlines during our 1st 3 games.  Again, just gotta stay healthy and practice well.

1. 3 W's!!!
2. The offense lives up to the hype
3. Some new playmakers step up on D
4. Tons of confidence heading into the UCLA game
5. No injuries

Weber St and UNM. Lots of snaps for the 2's or 3's. CU is going to be a little different. Most important thing is to go in @100% healthy and come out @100% healthy.

Re: First 3 games what do you want to see?

1. Foster average 150+ yards

2. See how EJ performs

3. TK throw for 300+ yards each game

4. Hardison have 3 or more sacks

5. Get a glimpse of either Smallwood or Humphreys

6. See how the defensive backfield lines up...Randall/Simone or Johsnon

7. Who solidifies the SPUR/Devilbacker postions

8. Randall have 2 or more INT's

9 Score 45+ points each game

10. Average less then 10 points on defense

11. TK have 1 or fewer INT's

12. Strong average 100 yds per game

13. See if Grant Martinez sees the field or how the TE/3back position is utilized.

14. Give up 2 or fewer sacks.

15. See how Westerman performs.

On the ground or total? I can't imagine him putting up that much yardage on the ground most games.

For sure total, he's a better weapon in the air and most useful but will love to see what he can do on the ground this season...especially in the slotback position running some fly sweeps.  Durability is really key for those first 3 games but I think Norvell will like to see what DJ does on the ground during that time.

I want to see if guys who have had lingering injury issues can actually get on the field and stay there.... Cox, Mendoza, Ball, etc...

Cox needs to learn the position still, hopefully he picks it up in Fall Camp...but I'd say he has a ways to go.  The other would most likely be starters day 1.

Re: First 3 games what do you want to see?

Given the line up and our weapons on offense, anything less than 50pts per game is a disappointment.

I'd also like to see the defense average 4 sacks and 3 turnovers per game. We also should average giving up less than 20 pts per game if our defense is going to be viable in Pac-12 play.

Oh, and I do expect a fight out of CU this time. Early in the season, playing us at 2-0 at home, they will believe they can win. They should play us close the first half and then we bury them in the second.

Total domination. If even Colorado can manage to come within 30 points of us, that's a bad sign.

Re: First 3 games what do you want to see?

I want to see a more physical team, especially from both lines. I want to see a mean streak from the O-line, pancaking as much as possible and I want to see the d-line develop a similar mentality.
How do I become a nonconformist like everyone else?

Re: First 3 games what do you want to see?

Unless something is really, really wrong, there's no way DJ is averaging 20 carries per game over the first 3.  And if he is in the 12 carries per game range, there won't be much you can take from that.  He should be out of the game by halftime at worst, possible late in the first half.

Re: First 3 games what do you want to see?

CU --- your scenario is just not going to happen.  Our 1's including Foster need all these early season reps (especially at CU) to prepare for the schedule from UCLA on. We will have 10 days or so after CU for everyone to rest.    It is not just about winning games.  It is also about preparing for the better competition to come.  The 1's will not be taken out, no matter the score, until early 4th quarter at best.

As for DJ;     his touches, and where they come from, will be determined by D. Lewis, Middlebrooks and Ballage as TT says.   Also we have to figure out how and where to play Gump Hayes.   Is HE a RB or a slot receiver for us?  If these other guys can step up, Norvel can then move DJ all over the field!!

After the first three games, 3-0 and a top 25 ranking.

You know, because we blasted some A list opponents.

Re: First 3 games what do you want to see?

Player health is the biggest concern, even though nobody can foresee this.

The defensive line has to step it up and hopefully develop a good rotation. This is my biggest question mark going into the season.

I would like to see special teams being special again. Gump Hayes gives us a burner and true hope, field position can only make the offense even more potent.

A true helper to team with Foster, Foster needs a breather during a long season, still don't think 20 carries a game is a great idea. With Kelly having so many receivers finally there should be no need for Foster to take a pounding inside, maybe Ballage can get those short yards.

As most figure the defense is the key along with Kelly staying healthy.

Can't start soon enough!!
