Former Sooner Assistant to ASU?

There are rumors that former Oklahoma DL coach and former OU LB Jackie Shipp is in the hunt for a spot on coach Graham's defensive staff.

He was fired. It's not like he left on his own terms. I've always been a Shipp fan but our DTs have been awful for 3 years now and something had to change. Guy have a ton of personality but his re recruiting was pretty non existent the past 4 years and it was probably best for both sides.

I think he is probably a pretty good coach, but think ASU really needs a guy who has been around the left coast recruiting.

Not to mention Shipp could mentor a group of young and super talented LB at ASU. I'm willing to wager that Shipp would bust it recruiting in Texas and Oklahoma..... you don't think he would relish beating the Sooners out of some talent.

I'm not knocking Shipp he's a good coach and was with the Sooners long enough to prove it, and if you look at his targets and commitments he's seems like a capable recruiter. However, I don't think this would be the right hire(at face value), its not as simple as pulling a guy who recruited Texas and Oklahoma well while he was a coach at Oklahoma. Look at Larry Porter, was rated the recruiter of the decade and absolutely killed it at LSU but he comes here and nothing. Now porter is at Texas and I imagine him to kill it again. We're kind of irrelevant in the south/texas and its not going to be changed easily. We need a guy with a track record of going into California and plucking talent. We need someone with west coast connections.

Educate me then. Oh, that's right. Your deal is to add zero to the board except negativity. Don't you have a Fire Herb post to get ready?

You obviously know nothing about Shipp's background or the circumstances surrounding his departure from OU. Funny you talking about negative posts given most of your's are, including the one I commented on

According to twitter, this is a done deal.

In the press release from today CTG is quoted as saying that Shipp does have ties to OK, TX and CA and will be focusing on CA. Hopefully that helps in your education.

Anybody else want to play Oklahoma in a possible bowl game now?  I have to admit it would be fun to watch the middle Stooooooopid shoot steam out of his ears again like a cheaply animated cartoon character.

RE: Former Sooner Assistant to ASU?

There are not many coaches in the Pac-12 who can say they've coached in 4 national championship games.

If he doesn't already have connections in CA he will soon enough and he walks in with immediate credibility. I wonder what he did during those three years after he played for the raiders and before he started coaching.

I think this is a great hire and we're bringing in a coach who could be here for a while and will work hard when it comes to recruiting. I have to imagine he and the Stoopids didn't get along.
