Love Wes and the Jazz

Posted: 11/5/2009 10:15 PM

Love Wes and the Jazz

Wes just got into the game and first time he touched it was agressive and drove to the hoop and converted on a floater. Looks much more secure in his role and is their best player of the bench arguably as Doug Collins stated.

Update: 5 points in 6 minutes looking good thus far..best i have seen him play and i have seen almost all of his games this year..no fear taking it to the basket and has really sparked the team

Just check the box score.  Wes in 4:44 minutes playing, 5 points on 2 for 2 shooting and 1 FT.  Most productive player.  Lets see, if he played 60 minutes, that would be 63 points.

Just hit his next shot. 3-for-3 for 7 points right now in the second quarter.

There is a lot of talk about  coaching vs. recruiting.  It is obvious Buzz has done a great job already in

two years. but do you think that Wes Mathews thinks he can coach?  Wes should thank Kelvin Sampson

for being so stupid, and got TC out of here.  No way does he make the league with TC as the coach.  To

Buzz,  great job on getting Wes Mathews into the NBA!

Yes and no. Without Buzz, I don't think he gets noticed. Without the 3 years under TC, he might not have stuck.

It hit me tonight watching them. His cuts and movement off the secondary break and in the halfcourt very closely resemble what he did in Crean's offense. Since Crean ran so many pro sets, I'd have to think that helped with the learning curve.

Agreed, but averaging 12 points a game, showing no outside game under TC, he may never had

a chance.  Buzz gave him confidence and let him play in a more open offense.  TC ran way to many

sets, when they did not work, it came time to jack it up.

Hit a big 3 at the end of the 3rd quarter to make it 10 points on the night.  Jazz up 13 in the 4th quarter

The best thing about Wesley..... he is as good a person as he is a basketball player. MU can,and should be proud !!

That's very true. We were fortunate to sign him at MU after Bo "soured on him". Luckily for Wes, Jerry Sloan is not tethered to the Swing Offense as the only way to win basketball games. Nice to see Wes get out in the open court and run---hope Jeronne Maymon and Vander Blue caught the game on national television(TNT).

Re: Love Wes and the Jazz

Sounds similar to how Bo "cooled" on Maymon and Blue, which is the reason MU even had a chance at them according to the lunatics. Oh, I think Diener was a similar sitaution. There are probably more good examples. It is just funny to think about how delusional they are over on the lunatics board.

As a number of us saw and commented here -----at the Madness scrimmage in 2008 that Mathews had developed significantly more strenght over the prior year----was significantly stronger going to the hoop and stronger off the glass-----this the first day of practice. If Buzz was responsible for the increased strength, kudos to Buzz.

However, to say he wouldn't have made the NBA had Crean been his coach senior year isn't correct-----proponents of that theory would have a point had WM been drafted based on last year's play, but that wasn't the case (he was not drafted)-----he had to make it the old fashion way, as he had to earn it in training camp------his senior season performance didn't mean diddily at that point..

Wes learned from Crean and Buzz.  And that is what successful players do.

Re: Love Wes and the Jazz

I was very impressed with his drives to the hoop.  He made a few early and led to his 12 pt night.  Always great to see a rookie playing aggressive.  I thought his defense was solid both individually and helping on Tony Parker.  He's sure to have future nights like this as well as other nights where he doesn't score or do much on the floor.  In the 4th quarter he got a breakaway lay-up but for the most part, as he should, he differed to Williams and Boozer.  My only small criticism is his he will have to get a better as a passer when he penetrates, and he runs the lanes on the break a little too fast and out of control.  I think he will aslo have to develop a pull-up jumper off the dribble.  Great performance though and we should all be proud of his early success.

He wouldn't have been brought into camp had he not shined his senior year.
