What makes a great Head Coach??? (5 votes)
IMO: The best coaches are the ones who get the very most out of their talent every year. One great example is Coach Henderson at Artesia. Most years they are not incredibly talented but even in the "down years" they compete for state titles. When they do have really talented groups come in......they simply destroy teams. Another one who I think of is Coach Carroll at Academy. That man consistently puts together a top 5 football team in 3A and does it with a Varisty of 20-25 players. ( probably only 30-35 in the entire program). Great coaches win all the ones they are supposed to win and even win a few they probably shouldnt. That is IMO how you can tell the really legit guys from the others.....

Sign of a Great Coach:
Get the most out of their players
Get their players to play with great effort and emotion
Win a few games they probably shouldn't

A great coach is someone that produces great citizens, with great integrity and work ethic, and uses football to accomplish that end. Someone whose players, later on in life, remember that what he was coaching in football, was really about their life. A great coach knows it's not about the wins and losses, unless you're talking about winning a kids heart and mind.

In the end, I want that guy to coach my sons. I would add this: Great coaches are able to KEEP players playing who may not start as sophomores or juniors but give them as much time as possible, teach delayed gratification, see the best in kids, thus being able to reload each year and yet do what is quoted above, in fact you cant keep kids who are late bloomers UNLESS you teach life lessons, skills, manners, etc. A kid who feels you care about him will do just about anything for that coach! That is what seperates the best from the good...and for many coaches, good is the enemy of great.

They place book marks on young men's lives, that they can refer to at any time in life. A great caoch builds a foundation of hardwork , dedication, preparatioin, teamwork, and persistence that young men can use in all aspects of life. Head coaches don’t coach on Friday's, or Saturday's, or even Sunday's (NFL). They coach six days a week and then on Gameday, they make a never-ending series of rational decisions, just as we do in life. In an essecnce, a coach is teaching you to be a coach at whatever you decide in life.
