SOME Tupelo fans

SOME Tupelo fans

This is by no way an indictment against all Golden Wave fans, but the clowns that perched up in left field, then migrated to the top of the third base grandstands were way out of line.  I don't know where or who the school administrator for the Tuesday night game against Columbus was but the constant racial references and badgering about some player's momma at a strip club (and she was in attendance) were way out of line.  Not only was that out of bounds, but we've never been to a more unaccommodating place than their field on this night.  No ice for coolers, filthy dugout and no visible repremand from anyone once the taunting got going.

Now look, I love a good, rowdy crowd that pulls for their team and might even call out a few of the opposition in some clean, good natured ribbing, but these folks were bad, just down right ugly and rude.  They stopped the racial stuff once they moved to the grandstands, but even then, they loudly cursed at least one of our players.  The umpire said he couldn't do anything and again, not one word was visibly spoken to these people.  The umpires were dead wrong and the school administrator should have been taking care of these issues with swift and complete authority in that this type of behavior should be conducted.

I can personally assure the Tupelo fans that when they travel to Columbus on Friday, they will be treated as we do all our guests, with respect.  The team will be extended the courtesy of ice water, clean dugouts and immediate correction of any incident that would take away from the great atmosphere we strive to provide at all our sporting events.

I know, I hate to have experienced it. We've been to Tupelo a number of times and this is the first time for all this. I don't know, I hope it was just a one-time screw-up, but...

That's odd... I've never seen or heard any fans at Tupelo act like that. They're usually pretty classy over there.

Must have been once in a blue moon. Sorry Columbus had to experience it.

Probably kids......I have been at home games before and heard kids in the stands acting childish.....no room for any abusive comments from the fans.....administration should have been contacted and then they should have been removed........with or without force....it doesn't matter....

Re: SOME Tupelo fans

This isn't new for Tupelo but I don't think that school's student body is the exception. It seems more visible at Tupelo because the student body bleachers aren't in left or right field like many other schools. Instead, they are elbow to elbow with the parents from the visiting teams. I suspect you could hear some of the same taunting from any student body where the student body bleacher is in left/right field. Sounds like the Tupelo baseball coach could take some initiative here to get Administration involved in regards to the taunting by putting teachers in the stands to control the student body.

Re: SOME Tupelo fans

From my experience, they were definately students, but other students were not with them. Many gathered in the stands along with other Tupelo and visiting fans. Later in the game, they moved to the stands and that's where the vulgar comments about a player's mother and the cursing of at least one player took place.

I have not been to another high school and had this type of "taunting" as you put it. There's no place for this, period. So, from my experiences, this is the exception. Others may try to paint things in another light, but not from my point of view.

I cannot comment on what the baseball coaches were thinking or if they passed any word along to administrators about stopping what was going on, because I simply do not know. What I do know is that the only time they slowed down was when we tied them in the 4th inning. Other than that, they were very vocal and well-heard by all.

Normal jeering and wise-cracks from opposing team's fans are to be expected. But "taunting", no. What ever happened to good sportsmanship and treating others like you'd appreciate being treated? Again, I can assure the folks from Tupelo will be treated much better than we were afforded Tuesday.

Doesn't shock me in the least....when I played left field in a playoff game in Tupelo when I was in high school, they used to throw golf balls at me durning the game and nothing was ever done about it.

When Ocean Springs played (and beat ) Tupelo in the State Championship, their fans were very vocal and supportive of their team, but not abusive to ours. Of course this was on a nuetral Jackson field. Sometimes home crowds are hard to control.

I think what will happen is there will be no more " out-field lounge" areas allowed. It has gotten to be a problem in some places, it is only a few people that ruin it for everybody. Administration could have stopped it , but they never do.

They usually don't unless the game officials ask them to take care of it and the game officials didn't do their job.

You can't fix stupid!!!

First off we didn't lose,  secondly I stopped it after I went yard twice in that game.  Our coach said something to the umpire and he told an administrator but nothing happened.

If the coaches washed out the dugout before the game, they didn't do a very good job of it.  Plus, if they used water, where did it go?  No mud in front of the dugout since it's all dirt around it.  Besides, the condition of the dugout isn't the main issue, but just another straw on the camel's back.

We asked for ice, twice.  Before and during the game.  If you would like, ask the coach that went over there with the cooler and was denied.  We speak English in Columbus and no mind reading is required.  But let's take this a step further - should we have to ask?  Why isn't it readily available and/or provided upon our arrival?

Can't speak to the golf ball issue.

Don't know about Tupelo's game administrator, this is part of what I posted.

We lost due to our own mistakes and Tupelo's ability to capitalize on them.  Simple as that.  I made no excuses nor did I even mention a win or loss.  I posted that under the proper thread and made my comments about how we were responsibile for the loss.

Re: SOME Tupelo fans

I have no dog in this hunt, but from my experience (21 years umpiring) I've seen class and no class from almost all classifications. I have noticed that teams with class pay special attention to their visitors, treating them as honored guests, making sure their needs were met, and going out of their way to make sure they have equal access to everything the home team has. As for the unruly fans - again, that simply shows no class. We (all who are involved in the great sport of baseball) may be opponents, but we all are human beings, hopefully brothers and sisters in Christ, and we all should treat one another with more respect. It seems to me that basic respect and common decency is quickly fading away from all aspects of life, especially competitive sports.

Here, here!  Nice post and I thank you for it.
I am more than certain the good folks in Tupelo will see to it that upon our return trip there in a little over a week, it will be what it usually is - enjoyable.

BTW, I sent slider a PM so we can discuss this off the board, if he wishes.

Re: SOME Tupelo fans

gotoman-- you must be the coach but anyway- I would like to know who you asked for the ice, because our booster club parents would have made sure you had ice! We(booster club) provide iced down drinks for our players both home and away so maybe we are not familiar with having to provide for visiting teams.  As far as the students yelling at your players, our AD, Danny Porter and new football coach David Bradberry made the students move to the stands.  We do not have a left field lounge, and the adminstration will not let us have one.  I don't understand what you mean by visible repremand but I know that several teachers along with the AD and Bradberry had conversations with these few students.  As far as washing the dugout, I don't know that it was done or not but there are drains all along the fronts of the dugouts plus it is hard to make turface muddy.  Sorry you had these inconviences and we(booster club) will work on all of these to get them corrected.  Play ball!!
