Assuming OM gets past ISU, they have a great opportunity to boost their RPI and resume with a win over SDSU. Maybe they get to face Arizona and possibly beat them.

This tournament scares the crap out of me. Last year in the Virgin Islands, Ole Miss came out sleepwalking and nearly lost to an awful Drake team in the first round; this, of course, was right before they were absolutely manhandled by Marquette. They need to stay focused in Hawaii today!

The time difference is usually very hard to adjust too. I went to Hawaii and it took a day or 2 to get adjusted.

Re: 2012 Diamond Head Classic

It is hard to see Ole Miss having trouble with Indiana State but then again you never know. How good are the Rebels? I don't think we know that yet but we might have a better gauge of that after this tournament. It is hard to see any other finals matchup other than Arizona/San Diego State though. Presumably, San Diego State will be by far Ole Miss' toughest opponent so far this year and one of their best opponents possibly all year in a top heavy SEC year.

RE: 2012 Diamond Head Classic

@coreyl: If I had to predict a score right now, I'd probably take Ole Miss in a 1-2 possession game. They should win comfortably, but the word "should" has never really mattered in Ole Miss athletics. (Can I get an amen?)

I expect them to square off against San Diego State on Day 2, and I'm hopeful that they won't utterly implode on themselves and get waxed all over the floor like they did against Marquette last year. Should they win against SDSU, I wouldn't expect them to beat Arizona, if in fact that's who they would play.

But as always, first things first: Beat Indiana State. I don't know the latest on Newby; I'm hoping that his ankle is feeling ok enough to give us some good, hard minutes. We need his intensity on the defensive end of the floor coming off the bench.

We can not lose to Indiana State..Whatever happens in the other two games, happens...

Lose to Indiana State, and we are going to be on the outside looking in come March...

If we can just beat them and Fordham, and figure out how to get 12 SEC Wins, we'll be fine

We'll crush Fordham. They're horrendous.

Re: 2012 Diamond Head Classic

I know it's too early to predict what will happen come march but I think ole miss needs to pick up a signature win this weekend. It doesn't have to be San Diego state but they need one to make the non conference schedule have any sort of value because all they have is a road win against a middle of the pack mid major (Loyola) and a loss to a decent mid major (Middle TN). The SEC schedule offers some opportunities for good wins but you can't count on that. Few people respect any schools in the SEC in basketball with the exception of Kentucky and Florida. So beating MSU, Georgia, Auburn, LSU, South Carolina, Vandy won't carry much weight. Right now a win against Ole Miss doesn't have much value either which is why Middle TN shouldn't feel to good either cause that's all they've got.

If ole miss can find a way to do the little things that they are famous for not doing (i.e. free throws, turnovers, shot selection) then they've got a strong chance against SDSU. If they don't, then I expect SDSU to mop the floor with them.

Re: 2012 Diamond Head Classic

ESPN showing Ole Miss a little love in this tourney preview post.

THE PICKS

Opening games: Ole Miss over Indiana State; SDSU over San Francisco; Arizona over East Tennessee State; Miami over Hawaii

Semifinal games: Ole Miss over SDSU; Arizona over Miami

Championship game: Arizona over Ole Miss

Is this Ole Miss's coming-out party? You may not realize it, but the Rebels are awfully good. They currently rank No. 21 in Ken Pomeroy's rankings, with a top-15 defense that forces turnovers, blocks shots and generally makes life miserable for opposing defenses. Problem is, the Rebels haven't beaten anyone good. Their best win is Rutgers; the rest are all total cupcakes. Facing the one good team on their nonconference schedule to date, Ole Miss fell at Middle Tennessee 65-62. There is no shame in that loss, and the Rebels appear to be legitimately good. But they'd do well to actually prove it this weekend.

*On a side note, I believe this would be the first time Ole Miss has faced Arizona since the 2001 trip to the Sweet 16 when Arizona beat the Rebels in a close one.

If anyone has seen SDSU this year, how do they compare to their last couple of teams?

Pretty accurate assessment by ESPN. I really like this team. But I gotta see this team do well at this tournament.

Re: 2012 Diamond Head Classic

I checked out SDSU's schedule and they've got wins over Missouri St. , Southern Cal, and UCLA. Their only loss is to Syracuse but still its really tough to say where this team is. None of the wins are extremely strong (they are better than those that Ole Miss has though). I know they return 4 starters from last year's team. They've got 2 Pre-Season All American candidates (Tapley and Franklin) that are really going to put our guards to the test on both ends of the floor. They also have several transfers that came from St. Johns, Virginia, and Utah. On paper this team looks like it should be scary good based on what they returned from last year and the new freshmen/transfers, but I havent really heard much hype about them on ESPN.

On another note, they have Steve Fisher coaching and I give him a lot of respect for what he's done to this program. He basically took a garbage dump and turned it into the Taj Mahal. (5 straight seasons of 25 or more wins)

Thanks for the info sportsmaniac. I didn't think they would have a lot of drop off from previous seasons, but I hadn't seen them play yet this year.

Re: 2012 Diamond Head Classic

Just another typical Kennedy team. A bunch of unmotivated street ballers that think they can shoot lights out but can't even make a free throw. Too much talent to consistently look like crap
