Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game: Clemons(FAT) scores 35 points

Mississippi All-Star coach Charles Moore called a timeout with 7:14 remaining in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic at the Acadome on Friday night.

His girls had battled back to take a one-point lead at the half, but a determined effort by a superior Alabama team had dominated his team in every aspect of the game and built a 12-point lead.

“We went from what we had been doing to a four-low set (featuring one player) or a three-low set and had two girls who were going one on one,” Moore said.

With 2:40 remaining, Alabama continued to lead by four points, but Jerontay Clemons was just warming up.

Clemons scored the last five points of the game, finishing with an All-Star record 35, to lead Mississippi to a stunning 94-91 win over Alabama.

The Southern Mississippi signee was an obvious choice for most valuable player honors after the game.

“I just came out and played and gave it my all,” she said.

While most all-star games feature equal talent subbing in and out, the 5-foot-8 guard from Class 1A Coldwater High south of Memphis, Tenn., was unique. In the first place, few coaches put an all-star basketball game in the hands of one player. Secondly, few deliver with such ease, taking over a contest that had been controlled by Alabama for the first 35 minutes.

“At the two-minute mark, I realized they weren’t going to stop scoring and no one else stepped up, so I just stepped up and took over the game,” she said.

With 1:28 left, Clemons’ 3-pointer cut the Alabama six-point lead in half. After a missed free throw on the other end, Erika Sisk hit another 3-pointer to tie the game with 56 seconds remaining.

Then, it was all Clemons. And there was nothing Alabama could do about it.

“There at the end of the game, we were trying to keep the ball out of her hands,” said Alabama coach Brant Lewellyn of Lauderdale County High. “We were trying to completely deny her the ball, but she’s such a good player we couldn’t keep it out of her hands.”

A beautiful drive through the lane by Alabama signee Jasmine Steele of Midfield with 30.6 seconds left gave Alabama a lead, but Clemons took a quick inbounds pass and went 94 feet, driving over defender Tierra Jones for the basket and adding the free throw after she was fouled to give Mississippi a one-point lead with 23.3 seconds left.

Alabama had a great opportunity for the win in the final seconds but Chardonae Fuqua’s shot on a drive through the lane wouldn’t fall and Jasmine Jones didn’t put enough air on her putback.

Clemons wound up with the ball after the Mississippi rebound and hit both free throws to give her 35 points, tying Evette Porter of Louisville (Miss.) High for the most points ever scored in the 22-game series. Porter had 35 in a 92-84 win over Alabama in 1994 at Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss.

Clemons was 7-of-7 from the field in the second half and 7-of-9 from the free-throw line. She finished 11-of-12 from the field, including 4-of 4 from the 3-point line, and 9-of-13 from the free-throw line, along with five rebounds, three assists, two turnovers and two steals in 31 minutes of playing time.

Sisk added 11 points, followed by Jasmine Golden with 10.

After the game, Llewellyn could only shake his head at Clemons’ performance.

“We talked all week about the way you win this game is you play defense and you play hard,” he said. “All-star games tend to turn into one-on-one shows. We talked to them about playing as a team and the team that played the best defense was going to win.”

Tiarra Pollnitz had 15 points, including 11 in the first half, to earn most valuable player honors for Alabama. Jones also had 15, followed by Lydia McGee with 14, Fuqua with 11 and Hayden Hamby with 10.

You mean tell to me some good players actually signed to play at Southern Miss over playing at Ole Miss or Miss State? I'm really shocked!

Well that statement alone shows how limited your knowledge of girls basketball is.  The 2010 Dandy dozen class had 3 players sign at Southern Miss.  Thats the most one in state school had on that group in over a decade.  Thats 10 years for those of you in Monticello.

The 2011 class included the top scoring juco guard in the country who was from Jones.

Plus if you really are that close to the girl in question, you would know what program her and her mom were ready to commit at the end of her last season at Law co.

This is just more evidence to the tampering by Wesco in this matter.

Look who got it off topic all because Tiaria decided to go to UGA. USM never had a chance of signing this kid. She didn't even want to go their games but coach asked to go and just give it a chance. And you have the nerve to say she was going to commit there, only in your dreams.

Reality,From this post you all been having pretty good recruiting classes over correct?I know from your comment, since I'm from Monticello, we slow and dumb. We don't know what a decade is. :(How about you tell us how many players stay at USM all four years and graduate there? If everything is so good there, why did your coach at USM apply for our Miss State job? I'm so glad our board didn't make that mistake of hiring that coach.Answer these questions and I'm going to work.

Our miss state job?  When did you graduate from state?

I guess its in your dreams that she applied for the state job when she just closed on a new house during the past season?

But to answer your ?, based on southern miss winning the Halbrook award 8 of the 9 years its been given for graduating the highest percentage of athletes in the state, id say that great many of them do.  A year ago 4 srs walked and earned degrees.  This years lone sr is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma international honor society which only selects the top 10 percent of business students, and is also expected to recieve a NCAA post grad scholarship should she choose to stay in america for her grad work..  The member of the squad who was kicked off in the fall will actually graduate this may.  Thats 6 over the last 2 years.

Your gonna have to get wesco to feed you a little better misinformation.  As usual your way off base.

I don't know him to tell me nothing. I know for myself. Every year kids transferring from there. So again, from the recruiting classes that have came in under this program, how many stayed and graduated from there?Half of the team always transferring because of how you all treat them kids. So, I guess it coach Wesco fault you all players transfer too huh? Its his fault you all never have a winning record huh? Just blame him for everything huh? It's his fault she had to buy a new house huh? It's his fault you all have 20 people at the games huh?

You pulled this thing off topic with the mcnelis bashing.  I simply pointed out that both mvp's were coming to the same MISSISSIPPI school.  Im starting to think both of you are really wesco.

Again, when did you graduate from STATE???

You have no idea who I am. And if I wanted you to know who I was I wouldn't have used a username. I can tell u that I'm not wesco, unless I have grown male parts over night.. I'll be glad when you people learn how to stop speaking out of such ignorance. As much as that man does, he doesn't have time to make up fake names and pretend to be someone he is not. Good try though. You on the other hand have time to speak negatively about him every chance you get, and u don't even know what you are talking about!
