UGA Spring Roster Posted
Saw many threads on this board about UGA and their over-recruiting, mostly complaints. Am going to post this list so all readers will see that if you go to schools like UGA, LSU, South Carolina and others you will have to compete for a roster spot every fall and you may not even make it to campus in August with your scholarship. Not judging either way, but all who want to play at UGA should know how it works. Not all big schools do this (Georgia Tech is an example of one who doesn't), but several do.
Fall 2008 Freshman Class or JC Recruits 1) Brennan May - Cut before fall, currently at Middle Georgia CC 2) Robby Hefflinger - Cut before fall, currently at Perimeter JC 3) Blaine Obrien - Cut before fall 4) Lance Martin - Walk on, cut after fall
5) Brett Devall - Drafted, signed MiLB 6) Zeke Spruill - Drafted, signed MiLB
7) Jeffrey Walters - Drafted, no sign, (JC transfer) on Spring Roster 8) Michael Pallazone - - Drafted, no sign, at UGA on Spring Roster 9) Cecil Tanner - Drafted, no sign, at UGA on Spring Roster 10) Chase Davidson - Drafted, no sign, at UGA on Spring Roster 11) Zach Cone - - Drafted, no sign, at UGA on Spring Roster
12) Colby May - on Spring Roster 13) Peter Verdin - on Spring Roster 14) Jonathon Taylor - on Spring Roster 15) Zach Laughlin - on Spring Roster 16) Tyler Maloof - on Spring Roster 17) Christian Glisson - on Spring Roster 18) Levi Hyams - on Spring Roster 19) Chase Hawkins - on Spring Roster 20) Kevin Ruiz - on Spring Roster 21) Earl Daniels - on Spring Roster
of this group of 21, 14 Freshman and one JC transfer are on the sping roster
Returning players from last year 22) John Herman - RSo - Cut 23) Jeff Bissell - So - Cut 24) Stephen Ochs Sr - Cut 25) Brent Hallman - Jr - Cut 26) Drew Haggard - RSo - Cut 27) Ryan Wooley - Jr - Cut before fall 28) Evan Tieles - So - Cut
Returning players on Spring Roster 29) Adam Fuller - Sr 30) David Thoms - Jr 31) Jason Leaver - Sr 32) Matt Cerione - Jr 33) Lyle Allen - So 34) Michael Demperio- Jr 35) Trevor Holder - Sr 36) Justin Earls - Jr 37) Robbie O'Bryan - Jr 38) Steve Esmonde - Jr 39) Dean Weaver - Jr 40) Joey Lewis - Jr 41) Carson Schilling - So 42) Miles Starr- Sr 43) Bryce Massanari - Jr 44) Alex McRee - Jr 45) Rich Poythress - Jr 46) Wil Harvil - Sr 47) Justin Grimm -So
So you can see, that while many schools only recruit to a 35 player limit (or a few over based on draft potential), UGA had 47 players to "choose" from which may be why they have been successful. As a recruit, as long as you know this going on there shouldn't be any whining. Playing time, the 25 man travel roster and not getting cut the next fall are other challenges.
There may be up to 28 returning players next year depending on which juniors are drafted, so the 16 or so signees for next year will have their work cutout for them. The other factor is only 27 can be on scholarship, so you know that many of the players listed for next year are in effect, "walking on" with no money, as is the case this year.

Re: UGA Spring Roster Posted
Some parents you cant tell them anything, they are completely clueless. Good example. 2 HS seniors from the same school played in a tournament at UGA a 3B hit some HR's over UGA scoreboard, UGA asks him to commit to them, he does for $300. Another player RHP throws 90-91mph, UGA wants him too. The RHP looks on the roster and sees 20 pitchers already there, says No. Signs with another Div 1 for alot of $$.
The 3B gets to UGA sees 5 players at his position is redshirted. Quits baseball. Many colleges ask him to transfer, he does not. The RHP becomes all conference his freshman year turns pro after his junior year in college.

How Are You "Cut Before Fall"
Fall 2008 Freshman Class or JC Recruits 1) Brennan May - Cut before fall, currently at Middle Georgia CChttp://www.georgiadogs.com/Vie...amp;SPSID=40708Looking at this entry on the official UGa website, B. May signed a NLI with UGa. That means UGa HAS to pay him athletic money for 1 year. So how exactly does a "cut him before fall" work?

Re: How Are You "Cut Before Fall"
Actually Brennen May counts against roster at UGA, that's why there's only 34. He transferred after fall.
Some of the other guys had signed NLI's and were told not to come to UGA that juco's would take them. The players could have forced UGA to honor NLI but chose to go juco rather than force the issue.
UGA throws kids (over recruiting) under the bus every year. But new recruits thinks that it won't happen to them.

Re: UGA Spring Roster Posted
From everything that I've read about Ga. Perimeter, the Hefflinger kid is tearing the cover off the ball. Makes you wonder who he would have signed with if he hadn't signed that NLI to attend Georgia? Oh, to know what his thoughts are about Perno & UGA now!! I know that it's hard for these young men that went through this to come out & say what they think about the way they were treated in hopes of maybe getting back to UGA but that's probably what it will take to keep other guys from falling into the trap that Perno sets for a number of young men every year. At some point, this has to be stopped!!

Re: UGA Spring Roster Posted
Why should it be stopped? It happens at every Major college, Perno is hired to put the best team out there, just like Florida, clemson, ga tech or any others. Therefore he recruits the best ball players he can. This is not high school ball anymore where mommies and daddies have a say in their kid playing. Perno has no idea a kid might get drafted or hurt. So if he has got other players to choose from it makes it easier. Just remember it happens at all the major schools!!!!

Not saying it don't happen at other schools but UGA has a reputation of doing it in bigger #'s. In my opinion, I don't like how Perno recruits but until PARENTS stop feeding their egos with my son signed a scholarship with UGA, things will never change. If you look at most baseball forums around Nov. and Dec. their are always complaints about the tactics that UGA uses, and like I said before, I don't have a problem with over recruiting 4 or 5 but 11-15 is ridiculous.

Re: UGA Spring Roster Posted
I know one of the kids and his folks who won't be there. I remember his dad strutting around when he signed. Parents have to be more grounded than the kids. Then this crap wouldn't happen.
And rto say all schools do it. Look at the number of kids signed every year by all the major schools. If uga's number don't jump out at you, get your eyes checked.

Re: UGA Spring Roster Posted
Well some of these kids might be draft choices, Perno does not know if they will sign a contract or not. So he has to recruit as many kids as possible. I know for awhile it was like this at Tennessee, It happens everywhere, some numbers higher some not as high. Most of the kids could still get on with another school if they tried. Perno told a kid, whose parents I know, that he could get him on at Young Harris, then it might work out in a couple years. So it sounds to me like he tries to help them out with other schools.

Re: UGA Spring Roster Posted
I don't think that Perno has to "help" them out so much. Do you think that any of the Georgia JUCO's would not want to add a top level D-1 committment to their team? The number of recruits he does this to is unbelievable!!! After he told soem players to not show up he still had 12 players he had to get off his roster. Sorry, but NO ONE has that many players drafted! He does this every year and until the parents and players wake up it will continue to happen. No one ever thinks it is going to happen to them. Then when it does they either have to go JUCO or loose a year of eligibility to transfer. Not to mention that it kept that kid off someone elses (competitors) rosters.

It does not happen everywhere!
UGA, Arizona are the worst. UGA had 21 early signees for fall 08. 21 with a roster of 35 you do the math.
Perno called several before school started and sent them to juco.
That's wrong and everyone does not do it.
Once the player signs NLI their screwed as far as D1 for a year. It's like your not good enough to play for UGA but you can play against UGA so,I'll fix it so you won't play against UGA
UGA will be successful but at what cost to the kids.

Re: It does not happen everywhere!
CoachMLC, I agree 110% with everything you and others have said about how detrimental this is to the young kids. Perno knows good and well what he is doing and for him to say otherwise is complete hogwash. Because he has the "Georgia" label with him when he offers these kids, 99% of them will sign a NLI in 2 shakes of a lambs tail. In doing so he is assured of 2 things: 1- he has a pretty decent player coming to play for him next year, or 2- he has a pretty good player that can't go to his competition for at least 1 year minimum and hurt him in conference play.
On the other side of this coin, for the sake of argument....I and others have to wonder if every single kid that a D1 signs a NLI is indeed a "Top level D1 player" as you put it.? What does "top level" entail? I ask simply because my way of thinking is that any player who ultimately gets cut on a D1 roster after the 1st or 2nd year is really probably not a D1 caliber player in the end. This is the player who probably should have gone to a lower level school but as we all know that ugly thing called Pride gets stuck in the throat and is often times difficult to remove.
LOL..I already know what you're going to say about those kids who sign NLI. And I do agree. Almost all of them are your best talent and are studs. My scenario above is probably aimed more towards the players who signed D1 in the 2nd signing period, etc.
Mr. P

RE: UGA Spring Roster Posted
I know Robbie (the sheriff). I felt bad when they took his scholarship from him. I guarantee Terry (his pops) has alot of 4 letter words to describe Perno. Robbie is saying it all with his bat.
