hampton — dutchtown has tabbed current henry county high associate head coach and offensive coordinator mark myers as its new head football coach monday, according to the school’s website.

myers won the job over 100 potential candidates who applied for the coaching vacancy created when kevin jones departed the program in mid january after just one season at the helm.

a former mceachern high and georgia southern football standout, myers also spent a year as running backs coach at his high school alma mater before joining coach morris starr’s staff at henry county for the 2013 season.

as the warhawks’ offensive coordinator, myers helped craft an offense that averaged close to 25 points per game, but was fairly explosive at times with two 30-plus point performances in losses to dutchtown and peach county, along with a 42-point performance in a win over southwest macon and 50-point outing in a victory over jackson.

warhawks head coach morris starr said he is confident that myers will be a good fit at dutchtown.

“i think mark will do a great job,” starr said. “i’ve known mark for five years now, and he’s gotten better every year. i think he has acquired the skills needed to be a good head coach, and he’s developed a lot with dealing parents and the other administrative things that go along with it all.

“there’s obviously some stuff he’ll have to learn first hand, i think, but i’m very confident in his ability to great things there.”

starr described myers’ offense as a “multiple option.” the warhawks basically ran a triple option style attack, but did so from wing-t, i and pistol formations. the warhawks developed dual threat quarterback marquez souder and 1,000 yard tailback derrick powell.

“Mark has the ability to control the game through various formations and plays,” Starr said. “He’s a ball control guy, but he’s knowledgeable, and if he needs to go fast, then he can do that.”

Myers was interviewed for the position by Dutchtown principal Terry Oates, Bulldogs athletic director and girls basketball coach April Tate, county AD Vicky Davis and Anthony Ford, the school council president.

Through a statement on the school’s website, Oatts stated his pleasure on the hire.

“Coach Myers overwhelmingly the favorite in the view of the interview panelists and me,” he said.

“He is, in many respects, an ideal candidate for this assignment with respect to experience, philosophy and temperament. I am confident he can build a constructive relationship with our student-athletes and school community, and in the process, build on the prior success of our program.”

Myers was not readily available for comment. Starr said he has promoted Bob Smith as the Warhawks’ new offensive coordinator. Smith was formerly a head coach at Forest Park, guiding the Panthers to its last winning season back in 2000.
