Jeff Bower

Jeff Bower

I get sick of hearing about Jeff Bower and how we should have never fired him and how awesome he was. I also get sick of people saying he beat such good teams while he was here and how his schedule was so much tougher than Fedora's, so I did some research.

Jeff Bower was 26-52 all time against Current BCS schools (not including teams that may be BCS schools in the next year or further).

Of those 26 wins only 7 teams he beat had winning records. If you take away the Louisville and Cincinnati teams out of those 7 teams he only beat 2 teams with winning records. One of those was South Florida and the other was TCU.

Bower beat a 3-8 Alabama team and was 1-11 against them lifetime. He beat a 5-6 Auburn team and was 1-2 against them lifetime. He beat a 5-6 Georgia team and was 1-1 against Georgia. He beat an 0-11 Illinois team and beat a 5-7 Illinois team. Bower did beat a 10-2 TCU team, but was 1-2 against them lifetime. Bower beat a 5-6 Nebraska team and was 1-2 lifetime against them. Bower never beat Tennessee, Florida, Penn State or Texas A&M despite playing all teams many times. He beat Virgina Tech when they went 2-8-1 in one of Frank Beamers worst years and was 1-1 against them lifetime.

Bower did accomplish nice things here and for that we are forever greatful, but he was hardly the world beater some of these old USM fans would have you beleive.

Re: Jeff Bower

The strength of bower was in his loyalty.  The guy loved Southern Miss, and turned down other jobs to stay.  In his last year, it was tough to watch as it became time to make a change.  He did a lot of great things and did it in a way that brought us great respect.

Re: Jeff Bower

I put USM in the boat with MSU and OM. If either of the schools could win 7-8 games a year,go to a good bowl game and run a clean program, people should be satisfied. Having 3 big schools in the same state is not a recipe for a national contender year in and year out. It never will happen. With that being said, Jeff Bower should have not been fired, Dan Mullen should never be run off from MSU and the jury is still out on Freeze at OM but with what has been seen so far with him and OM, he should never be run off either!!!

Re: Jeff Bower

With our recent schedules, 9-10 wins is a reasonable expectation for us.

Haven't you ever heard "never say never"? If state goes 0-12 next year, you and I both know you will be calling for Mullen's head. Especially if he says and does some of the same idiotic things as Ellis.

Re: Jeff Bower

Bower did do some great things for USM, but he'd became satisfied with a 7-5 or 8-4 record.

Fedora brought excitement and energy that hadn't been around the program in a while.

RE: Jeff Bower

EJ did so much damage here that a 6-6 regular season next year should be seen as an accomplishment.

I'll agree on that.

Fortunately, we aren't.  Thinking like that is the reason State will never win the SEC and why USM is currently in the predicament it is in.

Agreed. Why should anyone be satisfied with that? Dan Mullen I can assure this guy doesn't believe that way.

I agree, you should strive to be the best but, the reality of it is year in and year out, none of the big 3 will ever be at the top. Too many variables pulling against all 3 schools. I hate it and it sucks but it is what it is....

Re: Jeff Bower

I'd have to disagree with you there. Year in and year out you are more than likely correct, but just last season if a couple more things go USM's way they may have been in a BCS Bowl. Ole Miss got as high as Number 2 a few years ago. State has been to Atlanta and Mullen is doing a good job of building a program.
