I have nothing against WKU, and I know the majority of posters on this board are in love with the rivalry with them.  But wouldnt you rather be in a competitive conference that isnt the Sun Belt 2.0?  There is a lot of buzz being generated by our future conference mates in the C-USA, schools like USM, Marshal, LT, and UAB are very much looking forward to building strong rivalries with, is it not time to let the MTSU/WKU rivalry go?

Let the WKU rivalry go? You mean the one the school we've played in football over 60 times, that since 1921 the series has only taken a break of longer than three years twice? No, I don't think it's time to "let go".

Your point about not ending up in Sun Belt 2.0 is well made, but WKU has far more in common with us and the likes of USM, Marshal, LT and UAB than they do the rest of the Sun Belt. I'd argue that WKU is as good or better than several C-USA programs, if we can take bias and rivalry out of it, WKU is hands down the best possible addition C-USA could make. Now I don't necessarily have a problem staying put at 14 or even if we lost two schools staying put at 12, but if we end up adding anyone in the next few years, we're not going to do better than WKU.

Until we start letting schools with tiny enrollments, no market whatsoever, and shoestring budgets, we aren't going to be in the Sun Belt 2.0.

I would love to keep playing them, but I'd rather they stay in the Belt.

There are two teams I care deeply about. #1 - My MTSU Blue Raiders. #2 - My Auburn Tigers. When it's gameday for either team, it's a happy day for me.

EXACTLY! Them in C-USA would hurt our market as they would share it with us. I hope we block the hell out of them and get all of the other SBC transfers to do the same.

The rivalry could very easily continue on in the form of an out-of-conference scheduling.  I just get nervous when I hear MTSU fans address the importance of WKU to the C-USA commissioner and related message boards.  Especially when I see WKU commercials being played in Murfreesboro.  They're not just trying to poach our recruits, they're also trying to poach our prospective students.  This town isn't big enough for the both of us!

As I said in another post....

Bowling Green isn't a destination, it's a place you stop at to take a leak while you're traveling to somewhere else much better.

They don't belong in CUSA and they need to stay where they are.

THere is no positive coming from WKU following us to c-usa. I don't care what you say about our history. Take a look at Texas A&M. They didn't care enough about their history with the Longhorns to not jump for a better opportunity. We can always schedule them OOC, which I couldn't care less about. With them following they will not only be competing for recruits but for our Nashville market. FOrget them. I'd rather see USA take a Murray State before them. We need to seperate ourselves from the Sun Belt and their members. I don't want our new conference to turn in to the sun belt again with a different name. We've got much better opponents now. Rot WKU.

if you want the rivalry to continue, then logically, shouldn't you want them in CUSA and not the Sun Belt???

otherwise, there's little to gain from playing the game from an MTSU perspective....win, and no big deal you beat a Sun Belt school as you should.....lose, and it's a bigger deal that you lost to a Sun Belt school as a CUSA member

RE: C-USA Commish on WKU ?

here's the thing about this round of expansion....it's a growing bubble that will burst at some point....schools should work to maintain the rivalries that will/should continue after this bubble bursts (and it will, especially at the Big East/CUSA/SBC/MWC/and to some extent ACC level which make little geographic sense at this point) and teams are scrambling to align themselves back in the new conferences

I personally love the WKU/MTSU rivalry....it's about as local as we're going to get to where it means the same on both sides, and it benefits both sides to be competitive ON the field of play....I think they eventually do get pulled up to CUSA, and it will be a good thing for MTSU going forward

There are many rivalry games that are played as ooc's.  Just look at Florida vs. FSU, Clemson vs. South Carolina, NCState vs. North Carolina.  These schools don't feel the need to be in the same conference as their rival nor do I...

NC State and UNC are both in the ACC

look at Mizzou/Kansas, Texas/A&M, and (soon) Syracuse/UConn all great rivalries that are no longer played because of realignment....are those good things long term??? I would say emphatically no....and from an MTSU standpoint, you're giving up basically the only natural rivalry in the hopes of forming a new/better one (which is FAR from a given)

when I was in school we were told that North Texas was our biggest rival.....which was absolutely absurd considering as a Tennessean, I had never even heard of the school prior to going to college, but the point being there was so little identity in that Sun Belt that forcing unnatural rivals failed miserably...the result was that it did nothing to inspire me to attend games (though I generally did anyways, but as the final days of AndyMac showed, not many students did...)....this was prior to Western joining FBS....now, living in Nashville, those WKU games mean something because there are WKU grads all over the city....and look at the WKU basketball and football home/away games and without lying through your teeth tell me those aren't good for MTSU....you can't, period.

if you're okay with giving that up, more power to you.....just know that the in hopes of creating a rivalry with So Miss, Tulsa, etc, you're taking a chance that is more than likely not to come true for several reasons (the main one  being that schools like this are looking to move up over CUSA)

I don't follow the ACC at all, thought they were in a different conference.  My point is there are numerous other rivalries that aren't conference rivalries.  Most people that aren't a diehard college football fan think both MT & WKU are on the same level as a Division 1AA program.  It sucks for both of us but it really is the truth.  I have many people that come in my office every week and see my MT football helmet make comments along this line.  We've got to seperate ourselves from this viewpoint to the average football fan.  To do this we've got to quit playing teams that aren't getting us in the news.  I know if we're playing Southern Miss and Marshall there's going to be alot bigger write up in the paper and tv news coverage than playing WKU.  Sure the trip is nice and short but I still believe them coming to USA won't do us any good and will actually hurt in the long run.

I see alot of people saying they don't want WKU, but you have to look at it this way.

If not WKU, then who? Because if CUSA expands, I don't see a better all around choice.

Do you want CUSA to take more Texas schools? That doesn't benefit us.

Do you want ASU (one trick pony and Jonesboro makes BG look like Manhattan). Georgia State? James Madison? NMSU?

I could see ULL, but if LaTech throws a hissy over ULL, who else?

It's got to be WKU. Besides, the cream always rises to the top, we're better than WKU, and will likely continue to be no matter our conference affiliation.

I agree here. I think ULL and WKU, in that order, would be the best options to get to 16.

I don't believe WKU is the pick to replace Tulsa. Screws the divisons up.

That's what I've been thinking. It will push UAB west, which doesn't make any sense. It must be one of Texas St, NMSU, or maybe the Cajuns/stAte. I personally would vote for South Alabama as they could play in the East or West but I know they're probably further down the totem pole for reasons I don't agree with.

To me the logical choice would be Tx State.
