Fair Catch?

Fair Catch?

Brian, was their any explanation on the early whistle on the ECU punt late in the game that stopped what looked to setting up to be decent return? Watching the replay last night I did not see HS hands o above his head to signal a fair catch. The only movement I saw of his hands was when he reached up to catch the all. The ref gave some explanation to Hud. I wonder if he just admitted the blew the call?

Hammer, that play took place right in front of us and I saw no fair catch signal.

I have a question too -

On Lawson's TD catch he bobbled before securing while laying on his back, why was there no review?

Hell, they spent what seemed like a half an hour looking at Harris' TD and didn't even bother with this one.

Just curious.

Maybe they (the game refs) were just trying to give more cred to the SunBelt refs ... it's true ... they all suck!

The only thing I could see was he pulled one arm and hand up as he was catching the ball.

The announcers were skiing the same thing. They could not believe that it was not reviewed. Of course the same could be said for their last TD catch were they WR rolled over the ball as well and it looked lie it was bobbled and touched the ground.

In that case I guess those two plays evened out. I'm in no way bemoaning the absence of a review on Lawson's play, just pointing out the variances in the way these things get handled and then without any sort of explanations.

Re: Fair Catch?

Could it be that it comes an to a judgement on when the play is over? Not arguing just thinking about the dynamics of the call. Just as when a TD is considered the moment the ball crosses the plane of the goal line in a players possession even if he drops it later, Lawson caught the ball cleanly and his knee was down in the end zone so its a TD. The all bobbles after he rolls over. I could see the argument much like a runner whose knee is down that the ground can't cause a fumble.

I haven't a clue what the difference is after thinking about those 3 plays (Alonzo Harris' TD, the EC WR's TD and Javon Lawson's TD).

Alonzo's TD was looked at for several minutes by the replay officials and the other 2 apparantly not at all. Go figure.

Alonzo's TD was the most Lear cut IMO. It occurred right in front of me and he was clearly across the goal when it was knocked out.

Re: Fair Catch?

Bad camera site line they could never make a call on that play one way or the other.  Like you Hammer it happened right in front of me, and that ball crossed the goal line prior to being punched out.

The Lawson touchdown?  Probably a reversible call, but I will take a gift now and then.
