PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 12, 2012) – Junior second baseman LJ Mazzilli (Greenwich, Conn.) of the University of Connecticut baseball team was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week for the week ending March 11.
Mazzilli batted .462 (6-for-13) and had a .611 on-base percentage and .846 slugging percentage in a 2-2 weekend for the Huskies at the NIKE Showcase, hosted by Oregon and Oregon State. He recorded at least one hit in all four games and has successfully hit in 13 out of 14 games this season.
Mazzilli led the UConn offense with three runs scored and four driven in. Three of his six hits this weekend went for extra bases, including two RBI doubles in an 8-7 win over No. 22 Oklahoma and a homerun, his second of the year, in a 6-3 win at Oregon State.
For the season, Mazzilli has a team-high 11 runs, three doubles and seven RBI, while his batting average has climbed to .302.
