Urban Meyer to OSU today?

Urban Meyer to OSU today?

Looks like it will be announced this afternoon.  Congrats to him.  But not sure how the health issues that played into his Florida departure will be any better in Columbus?

Guess he won't be making any motivational speeches at UC practices in the near future?  rolleyes

Re: Urban Meyer to OSU today?

I wonder what kind of impact this will have on UC.  Obviously, Urban is an alum and his sister is Dean of Arts and Sciences, so he holds incredibly close ties to the university.  My guess is that Ohio State will be bringing in a greater share of out of state recruits.  Will this be a net positive for UC and in-state recruiting efforts?

I'm wondering the same thing coloradobuck.

I like Urban Meyer.  I think he is one of the top 2 or 3 coaches in college football and OSU is making a great hire IMO.  But I wonder about its effect on UC on recruiting, fan interest, etc...

Michigan and ND fans cannot be happy about this.

I think I'll get pounded on this but, in a strange way it may be better for us.  Meyer is one of the best of his generation and will attract great talent from across the country.  That includes Ohio.  Realistically there will be room for 7-12 Ohio recruits a year leaving about 150 BCS bound boys to squabble over.  Not bad odds.

In reverse order, I think it will hurt UC in fan interest.    The Buckeye Bandwagon (particularly in Greater Cincinnati) will be stronger than ever.

As far as recruiting goes, as someone else mentioned has and will even more so now recruit on a national scale. That being said, Urban will recruit different athletes than the Buckeyes have before.   Gone will be the big Devier Posey type receivers and enter the smaller, yet really quick  type of receivers this coaching staff likes to get (think Percy Harvin).   The big OL like Mike Adams, JB Shugarts, et al.  will be replaced by smaller, more athletic type of guys who would be a fit here.

I don't think it matters at all.
They aren't our rivals.

Re: Urban Meyer to OSU today?

I don't know that it's a matter of rivals or not.  It's more a matter of the decisions recruits make.  UC has quickly established itself as a top program in this region.  They're beating out the likes of IU, etc and going up against Ohio State more often for recruits.  If Ohio State is no longer recruiting as many (pure speculation) kids from Ohio and has a coach with close ties to UC, would that not open up some opportunity?  In the end, I think it turns out to be a good thing for UC (as long as the conference is finally stabilized).

this. uc needs to expand on the small but loyal group of diehards that populate this board. the osu bandwagon is going to grow in southwest ohio, and take away from possible uc fans.

Re: Urban Meyer to OSU today?

let me preface this by reminding all I am a huge, long time fan. That being said: I dont think any recruit who has the oppurtunity to play at Ohio State is going to pick UC over OSU. Maybe we can get lucky  here and there, but for the most part all kids are going to pick OSU over Cincy. Its just a fact.
That being said, in the end it is so hard to look at a kid at 17-18 and say this one is a 5 star  and this one is a 3 star.
I would love to see a list of NFL players and see how many really were 5 stars.

Also, as an aside, don't be surprised if this blows up in OSU 's face. Urban is not an individal who handles stress well. Hes had palpitation, arythmia's and esophageal spasms mimicking a heart attack.  I truelly belive this is a really bad decision for Urban and OSU.

We typically don't recruit the same type of kids so its not like we lose many guys to them.
Of course if we switch direction and head back to grunt ball it could be an issue.

But Urban doesn't run grunt ball.  We may be head-to-head a little more often on the offensive side?

True.  Of course now that he doesn't have the guy who ran his offense for him we'll see how smart he really is.
(not ripping Meyer) but once Mullin went to Mississippi State things changed big time at UF.

Much in the same way things changed for Brian Kelly when Jeff Quinn went to Buffalo.
Sometimes assistants ARE that important.

Yep.... but he might get the Quinner back soon.
Buffalo finished off a stellar 3-9 after a scary 2-10 the year before.
I think he survives it... but he better win some games next fall.

It will be the same as if Tressell was still on board. I think Urban will use his recruiting connections in the deep south to the tremendous benefit of OSU. BTW, I wonder if any of Michigan's recruits from Ohio will now reconsider. Hoke and company made the most of the unfortunate OSU problems and with maliciousness belittled the OSU's program. If Meyer sticks it out for the long term, he will likely prove to be a home run hire.

Michigan and OSU have taken turns belittling the other for decades.   Hoke and Meyer are excellent coaches, so the series should be pretty good again going forward.

The sad message out of Columbus is that no matter how much they cheat and bend the rules, they can buy their way out of it.   Any punishment that comes their way will be meaningless.

Great point.  Kelly's team looks like they ran out of ideas on a lot of Saturdays.  In spite of all those 4-5* players, they remain middle of the road everywhere except their own fan base.

Got to tell you I watch ND and don't think they are all that talented.
The have some guys, but they definately need more to become an elite winning program again.
