Syracuse vs USF

Syracuse vs USF

Did anyone else watch the end of this game? The refs were horrible! It looked like they were doing anything possible to help USF win the game, it took Syracuse three times to score the game winning TD! it looked like they scored the TD the first two times...

So we'll face a Syracuse team that is 4-4 overall but 3-1 in the Big East...should be a good game and hopefully our Bearcats learned a lot from the tough loss to Louisville...

Go Bearcats! Beat the Orange!

.....on another note, let the ESPN love-fest with Notre Dame cover every inch of their website.

Vomit.

So how quickly will the Big 12 complain when KState is leapfrogged by ND AND Oregon for the NC Game?

Maybe it'll move them to add two new programs with a strong rivalry to their conference like Cincinnati and Louisville!

You are 100% correct. we better be ready for SU. They have clearly righted the ship.

with what excuse and arm pitt did to the league, i wouldn't mind it one bit if officials were told to stick it to them both.

you mentioning notre shame reminds me of holtz when they went to the studio at halftime of the game friday night. that old fool was babbling about the bounces were going cincinnata's way. no bounces went uc's way. the officials made the correct call of a muff on the punt. what an idiot holtz is. wish he would shut up for once.

A typical ignorant college football fan. As if your team wouldn't take 17 million versus 4 million a year if the ACC or Big 12 had offered your school a slot instead of "excuse" or "armpit."

While I admit that I would share the same sentiment if my school was stuck in the BE; I am able to recognize the opportunity and how easy of a decision that it was.

Good luck this weekend. From what I saw versus Pitt and on Fri, I like your defense and Munchie will have over 100 yards rushing against us this weekend.

How much of that money are you personally seeing?  Sure it would be used on investments to your schools athletic infrastructure but is Syracuse ever going to be relevant in football in the ACC?  You guys have been absolutely pathetic for the past 10 years in the Big East and we are "not a power 5 conference".  Good luck on trying to get bowl eligible every year and always remember that basketball season is right around the corner.

Have you seen the ACC this year? Or last year? Or the year prior? They've been horrible. I think the top 4-5 BE schools would have no problem competing in the ACC. And that isn't even considering the disadvantage in resources between schools of each conference.

You're right, Syracuse has been poor these past 10 years. But I think we are headed in the right direction. These past 5 years aren't even comparable to how terrible we were 5 years prior to that.

Good luck this weekend.

Re: Syracuse vs USF

Can you guys give a rundown of your defense and special teams?

Syracuse has been horrible stopping punt returners so that should be a huge advantage and opportunity for UC.

I see UC (as usual) has an exceptional run defense but a suspect pass defense. I would hope that our OC is smart enough to come out passing early in an effort to force UC to adjust and hopefully open it up for our running backs.

My thoughts,

Defensive Line- We aren't very big up front but despite that we seem to defend the run well, we are smallish but very active.... play very hard.
On the flip side we haven't been able to generate a lot of pass rush since Stewart has been out.... a real concern.

Linebackers- Blair is a beast... Lord knows where we would be without him.
Bomar very active player.... the rest of the guys are pretty good but those two are the standouts in the group.

Defensive backs-  I think Drane is the best one (hope his hand is back to full health)
Our other corners are pretty solid.
BUT
I am concerned we are playing way too much press coverage considering our lack of pass rush AND lack of adequate Safety play .
Seems as if this spot is turning into a disaster area again....
I don't know if Drew Frey is injured or what is up.... but he looks like he is running about a 5.2/40 back there.
If I was anyone I'd just drop back and throw long... UL killed us with a few of those.
Bridgewater just threw it as far as he could and let his WR's did the work.
They could do that because our corners can't count on having safety help deep.
Made Teddy look like a All-American QB... again any trolling UL fans I think Teddy is a good QB... but we didn't make it difficult on him.

Special Teams-

Kick Returns- when he gets a chance Ralph David Abernathy IV is as good as it gets.

Punt Returns- we aren't bad here... but not special either.

Kickoff- When O'Donnell kicks most go in the end zone.
We have given up one TD... but I think that was more a fluke than a symptom of a bigger problem.

Punt- O'Donnell ought to be considered for the Ray Guy award.

Field Goal Team- Milliano is a slightly above average kicker.  Kicks the ball too low... average leg.  Effective range around 45.  Though he has hit a few longer.... but I wouldn't bank on it regularly.
Not ripping him, just admitting he isn't an all world kicker.

Thanks!

Yeah I think if you polled Syracuse fans, Abernathy would win in a landslide of guys on UC we are most concerned about. Isaiah Pead ripped Syracuse so bad last year I thought the Giants should have drafted him 1st round. Fortunately our kickoff specialist has regularly been able to kick touchbacks. Hopefully that continues.

The Syracuse OL has been up and down. Since they got AA candidate Pugh back at LT, the line has played much better. We still have a 270 lb center so that should be an interesting matchup against the UC interior.

The biggest question mark by far for Syracuse is its own rush defense. They only gave up an average of 35 yards per game to running backs in the Big East prior to USF last weekend. That was against Ray Graham, Lyle McCombs and Jamison of Rutgers. Then they go out and give up 300 yards to USF on the ground last week! So we don't know if that's an aberration or a product of playing a spread type of offense. Which obviously favors UC on Saturday if that is the case.

Good luck this weekend.

I understand that it was a team loss but you have to put a lot of it on Munchie when he throws the ball up into the air in OT into the wind hoping for his receiver to make a play.  Especially when we were in field goal range.

Abernathy is a waterbug, but the Orange better not sleep on George Winn.  He has nearly matched Pead's production on the ground up to this point.   He is also much more physcial than Pead was and has no problem lowering his shoulder to put a lick on the guy tacking him.

You didn't ask about offensive line so Vol did not cover it, but our O-line play has been very good.  They have paved the way for 3 guys averaging 6 yards a carrying, something only Oregon can say as well.  The biggest weakness for the o-line is that they are young and have been caught grabbing a shirt or two resulting in big gains being taken back.

Good info about the OL thanks. The Syracuse d-line has been mediocre from a pass rush standpoint. Nothing eye popping but hasn't been bad either. More of a blue collar effort as opposed to 1-2 great players. The problem they've had is containing the "running" quarterbacks. Based on Jones' comment about having Munchie run more with it may be the deciding factor either way. If he can run like Daniels did last week, UC wins. However, if we can keep Munchie in the pocket and force him to throw, that could be the key for Syracuse.

My hope is he was trying to put the ball deep corner end zone where in theory only his guy could catch it... and the wind knocked it down.
BECAUSE at least he would have been using a sound thought process even if he didn't excecute it.
The gusts we were getting at that time were pretty harsh.
