Re: CMU vs. Ohio Live Chat

I am not expecting a CMU win tonight but I do expect to see a competitive game.  I am not disappointed with out team.  We are just too young and inexperienced to challenge for a MAC title or even a MAC West title.  But that is all going to change in a year or two, I am sure of it.  I like the track we are on.  All we need is a big man.
Unfortunately, at this stage of our development Ohio is probably too strong for us.

This year's MAC tournament will likely come down to Ohio and Akron for the championship, just like last year.  That is of course if the brackets allow a final involving those two teams.

Re: CMU vs. Ohio Live Chat

"All we need is a big man"; couldn't disagree more. We need some BIGs not just, "a big man". We also need some slashers, guys other than p.guards who can score off the dribble and break the d.down off the dribble and then pass to shooters. Can the guy from Edwardsburg beat folk off the dribble, can the guy from Missouri beat folk off the dribble? We'll see. Hopefully, we'll get a big in the Spring. Then the Meyer guy and prayerfully a slasher. Look at some players; guys up on 'em defending, doesn't matter they beat folk off the dribble, jab step, bump back step shoot it, get beyond you then mid-range, get beyond you and dish, get beyond you and finish in traffic. "All we need is a big man", disagree, we need much more. We'll see.      SHALOM

Went to the Ohio board and did some digging. We shot 40%; that ain't a big man issue. We shot 4 out of 21 from beyond the arc; that ain't a big man issue. We were out-rebounded, 36-34 even without a big man.Again, we need a lot more than a big man. SHALOM

Re: CMU vs. Ohio Live Chat

Wow, I feel like I have just been whipped with the cat o' nine tails.  I've got red welts all over my image as a contributor to this board.  I have several comments I could make but would like to gather my thoughts before responding.  I'll get back to you in a day or so.  But keep this in mind while you wait, Chris Kaman, maybe as a soph but most certainly as a junior, would make this team an instant contender for a MAC title - in my opinion.

I did pick up on a couple comments made during and after the game that I thought were quite interesting.  To the best of my memory, this is what I heard.

Coach Davis went through the stats with Don and Robbie after the game.  He pointed out that we were very close to Ohio in one catagory after another - rebounds, steals, blocks, free throws, turnovers etc.  The one stat where there was a glaring difference was 3-pt shooting.  Ohio made 10-21 for 47.6% while we made 4-21 for 19%.  In the Davis' mind, that had a lot to do with the outcome of the game.  We simply were not able to hit the outside shot.  I should say the other glaring difference in stats was in assists where Ohio had 19 and we had 9 but I don't remember Coach mentioning that.

Also, Don Chiodo pointed out during the game that the CMU defense was collapsing in the middle in an attempt to defend that area of the court leaving Ohio players on the perimeter wide open.  Ohio would drive into the paint, we would collapse, they would kick the ball out to a wide open, undefended player who would easily and smoothly drop a three point shot.  I couldn't agree more.  And it wasn't just happening in this game.  This is something that has been going on for a while.

Would a CMU big man have helped us defend the paint and allow more of our players to defend the perimeter?  I'll leave that up to you to answer.

And by the way, I'm going down to Addison Friday night to watch Meyer.  I'm not sure what I am going to get out of this.  I'm not much interested in high school sports and don't know how much of a judge of basketball talent I am when evaluating players at this level.  But it's the middle of winter and it's something else to do.  Maybe we will run into each other down there.

My attempt failed!! Listen, I'm not trying to be negative I'm just trying to evaluate our team where I see us. The Ohio board re-cap showed just how well Randall played and the price his play exacted on the play of the Ohio p.guard, Cooper? Cooper is a talented player and had his hands full with Randall. But Ohio was deep and talented enough to play over that. Beyond Randall there's a real drop off. I wonder about next season when he's gone. SHALOM

I don't think you are/were being negative at all.  You were disagreeing with something I said and you were trying to support your point of view.  Nothing wrong with that.  We all have opinions about how the team is performing and sharing those ideas on this board is what makes this fun and interesting - at least for those of us who like basketball.

It's just that you steam rolled me with a ton of thoughts and I need some time to get back to you which I will do.  In the meantime, keep the challenges coming in the future.

Re: CMU vs. Ohio Live Chat

I think it's pretty clear what the issues are, and you guys have touched on 'em.  Randall is the only guy that can consistently generate offense for himself.  The others need a screen, or a pass off a double team, or something else to be effective.  The poor shooting doesn't concern me all that much.  Most of our guys are very young and will improve after a year of conditioning and sharpening their skills.

If you watch us now compared to 2-3 months ago, I think you'll see that our offense is starting from 35-40 feet from the basket.  Teams are content to let us pass the ball around the perimeter and only Randall is capable of consistently getting to the hole.  Defensively, there's nothing remotely resembling a stopper in the middle.  When teams get in the lane, bad things usually happen.  There are plenty of solutions out there; Keno's gotta find 'em and bring 'em in.

Someone mentioned tired legs recently, and I see that in a couple guys.  Simons is the obvious example.  He simply has to get bigger and stronger - I suspect he will.

Losing Randall will hurt, but I love what Fowler brings and I think Richardson has a chance to be a big contributor as well.

So in summary, it's not as good as it was in December and it's not as bad as it is now.  I'm hoping we can pick up a couple wins down the stretch, and then it's time for Keno to get to work.

Thanx, the last thing our board needs is that petty juvenile attack stuff. If I ever go there, call me out!!  Kaman with this...maybe not this year, but this group next season and Kaman too...we go dancing. If Coach can get a big come Spring and Meyer is real...it's on. By the time Meyer at 6-10 is a frosh our guys will be better, period. Our guys are gonna become better shooters, Fowler, etc. should be able to man the point. For Coach to get two top ten state-of-Michigan guys, Meyer and Redmon is great in-state recruiting and one of them is 6-10... sounds good to me. The post-game stat review is interesting. Randall has to score which means he has to shoot...that probably cuts down on assists, at least from the point. As our guys shoot it better the assists will go up. I'm still holding out for a talented slasher.biggrin Lest we forget, Ohio ain't no joke. This is pretty much the same bunch that did so well in the Dance last season. You might want to peep their in-coming class and as for the job that Dambrot is doing at Akron..kudos.  SHALOM

Re: CMU vs. Ohio Live Chat

could the 2013/14 chippewas be worse than this years team. losing randall is going to hurt a lot more than many think. fowler and richardson show glimpses of a bright future but after that i simply am not seeing the talent to compete. why are we shooting not so well from three pt land. when the offense is geared for the three i would think we would be at least decent in our bread n butter plays.
also it appears we are constantly a team of two halves why do we always have a monumental second half collapse.
i was pretty excited about this season but the mounting losses make it difficult to stay interested.

Re: CMU vs. Ohio Live Chat

I think we all agree with you about Randall. I still don't understand how we got him but I'm so glad he decided to come to CMU.  I shudder to think what sort of team we would be without him.  He will be hard to replace.  Fowler is getting most of the attention right now but I have my doubts about him as our number one guy at the point.

But it's really hard to talk about what we might do next season. It depends a lot on who we bring in.  If we can get some help down low on offense and defense almost everything changes. With some help in the paint I don't think Coach Davis will run the offense he has in place right now - three point shooting and dribble driving to get to the free throw line.

The three point shot is becomming more and more popular and it will be part of our game in the future that's for sure but with some help in the paint we should not have to take almost half (45%) of our shots from beyond the arc.  Also on defense, with some help in the paint we will not be playing only zone. That will be true even though the zone is becoming more and more popular, even in the NBA. I expect we will see some man as well.

With help down low everything will change and the roll of the point guard may shift from dribble driving to dishing out the ball (with or without dribbling into the paint) and running the offense. Maybe Fowler can do that well. My big concern about him is he looks out of control at times when dribbling the ball and can rack up turnovers in spurts. We will just have to wait and see what we bring in next year in the way of new players. This will be our first real recruiting class under Coach Davis.

I'm not discouraged.  I like what we are trying to do.  We just don't have all the pieces in place to do it right now.  I have to remind everyone, as I have been reminded, no one expected much out of this season.  The guys are working hard and doing the best they can.  I'm sure they would all like to be doing better - that will come in the next couple of years.  Too bad Randall won't be here as a player to see it.

RE: CMU vs. Ohio Live Chat

Guys players like Chris Kaman don't come around that often especially at the MAC level...I admire the hustle but quite frankly other than Randall who I feel tries to do way too much, and wish he would sacrifice his game to help our other guys develop but I know that is way too much to expect from a one year senior. The guys are working hard but I am not seeing a lot of growth and many of our fellow MAC schools are also youngish so it is going to take some severe recruiting work to change our status...we ain't gonna outscheme anyone that is obvious...in theory that high pressure attack at both ends of the court is fine but in reality if you are not ten deep you are just going to wear yourselve out IMHO. Fatique makes the legs go, and there goes your shot and your rebounding..as Dave Cowens once said rebounding is not just about height it also has to do with the amount of space you take up.

RE: CMU vs. Ohio Live Chat

In that the WI. 6-8 kid never got to campus, I'm figuring that we have two to give in the Spring. Clearly Coach has to get a big come Spring, if not two of them. Carlos is a #26 in MO; Kocinski is ~Top 25 ish in MI and the TX point, Braylon is talented. All of these guys can shoot. We could have a stronger Simons and a legit big next season; if not two bigs. Per Steve Bell, Fowler was the premier rising senior p.guard in Michigan. An injury stopped all that and he ended up at IMG. I believe he got 7 assists against Ohio. Fowler, the Ypsi point and the Texas point could make us solid at the point. Don't think these guys will replace Randall's scoring, but as facilitators and occasional scorers the point could be good. If our present young two and threes can mature, that position will improve next season. Carlos and Kocinski would only have to "chip in" some. The 4 and 5 would be the challenge. It's hard to contemplate that we could be worse next season...that's a nightmare. Coach got to get some inside help this Spring. By the time Meyer arrives and hopefully my vaunted slasher type we could be ready to challenge in the West. No height in the Spring; all bets are off. SHALOM

Well size is on it's way. One more part to our puzzle

As for the some of the other thoughts, yes loosing Kyle will hurt, but the way I look at it, Fowler, DJ, Jon, Blake, Spencer, and Stew gives you 6 freshmen who normally in your program would be redshirted right now, or maybe play 5 mins tops a game, I mean Mr Basketball Matt Costello can barly get off the bench at MSU... well before May 15th Blake was going to play baseball at Stenson. All of those guys are getting minutes and learning on the fly that will only help us. those 6, plus Keel, Nick, Josh, Milos, Rayson, who ever else is added this spring, and just another year in the system we will be better next year, and then in 2014 I expect to compete for a MAC West title, and in 2015 a MAC title. Thank God...where you been? The Milos news is GREAT...all 6-11" GREAT!!  How would you compare Milos to the kid at Walled Lake Western? Love your article on Milos!! What direction do you think we might go in, "this spring", beyond Milos? Do you see us maybe carrying a scholarship over for next recruiting season? I've seen film on Meyer; your take? Finally, read we offered the kid from De La Salle; do we have a chance? Again...good to hear from you; you're really missed. Great news to say the least...Valentines' Day just got a little sweeter.biggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrin                                       SHALOM
