Brian Van Gorder

Former CMU assistant coach looks like will be Brian Kelly's new Defensive Coordinator.

Brian Van Gorder is a bit "harsh" in the language department for me! However, he does know his defense and given the talent at ND, Van Gorder should be a good choice for Kelly!

Well, last I checked he was coaching football, not the church choir team.

Well, you missed much of my point. However, in answer to your post: IMHO in an educational institution, the coaches should use language toward their players that the players can use/emulate someday when they are leading an organization!

Dick Parfitt won three MAC BB Championships and never uttered a word more "out of line" than "Horse Pucky!" Note: those were the exact words Dick used occasionally (more often when he lost) while playing a card game of Hearts with the players rather than when coaching the players!!

I guess I don't find harsh language that offensive. As long as he's not teaching them to molest children, rape women or rob banks I can tolerate some swearing from a football coach.

Depends how it's used.

Coach says, "C'MON YOU F^CKING LOSER! HIT THE F^CKING HOLE AND STOP BEING A PU$$Y!" - That coach would be a grade A jerk.

Coach says, "C'MON! HIT THE F^CKING HOLE LIKE I KNOW YOU CAN!" - That coach is just trying to genuinely help the kid, but is just very intense.

Context is everything.

Agreed and my my point was being made to the second of those sentences. It's one thing to you some foul language, it's another to be verbally abusive.

I've heard stories about Van Gorder during his time here at CMU.  Maybe he's evolved into an encouraging coach instead of an A-hole.

I'm pretty sure vulgar language will be accepted under Kelly.  I'm not a professional lip reader, but I can sort of figure out what Kelly was saying:

Brian Kelly Is Upset

These things get swept under the rug, especially when you gets results the way Kelly has.  A down year for him was 9-4 with a bowl victory.

I'm pretty sure they don't allow swearing on the Notre Dame campus. You guys know that's a religious school, right?
