Attack on Indian Nicknames and Mascots....
It was mentioned in a post earlier about the Sate of Mi. again putting their nose where it really doesn't belong. I was just wondering if anybody has anymore information on the subject and if they are targeting just the generic names (Warriors, Redskins etc.) and /or actual tribes such as our Cheppewas?

Re: Attack on Indian Nicknames and Mascots....
Why is it usually a white person sitting behind a desk that claims the mascot names are derogatory and offensive and not the tribes themselves. If a Saginaw Chippewa tribe statement were to come out and they feel it is bothering and offensive to them i would say lets get a new name in a heartbeat, but when some old fuddy duddy is looking to make a legacy as the man who brought down tribal names comes out with this I feel it is just a bunch of ballooney

Re: Attack on Indian Nicknames and Mascots....
The last time I checked, the CMU fight song contains the line "Chippewas, we're proud of our nickname." If I find out that was just lip service to find a word that rhymed with "game," I recommend a substitute. "Shame" and "blame" come to mind.

I think most of us here agree that we will be Chippewas for life, and that people need to mind their own business. I am hoping someone can shed some light on the latest movement to mess with us.

CMU70, like all of the respondents to your posts, I too took the time to actually read the article. Again, I'm sure that the other respondents did the same for to fail to do so would not speak well of the fact that most who post here are college trained folk...just sayin. The Civil Rights Dept. of the State of Michigan cited studies that show the negative impact that some mascots of N.Americans have. The Morning Sun article didn't provide a source which in my opinion is other than good journalism. The head of the Saginaw Band of the Chippewa Tribe, Mr. Cloutier, offered that Braves, Redskins, war paint and feathers are highly offensive. By the way six high schools in the state of Michigan use the moniker, "Redskins"...let that one settle in. Only about 35 schools are included. The request has nothing to do with Colleges/Universities. Again, like the other posters I too took the time to actually read the article...quite interesting. SHALOM

I know that this is a serious-ish topic, but all this talk of Indians and their portrayal puts me in mind of my favorite.

If you look at any nickname with the intent of finding something offensive you can find something to complain about. Ease up

When we create bureaucratic positions like this then those people have to justify their job. If they find nothing to raise a stink about then what do we need them for. We had a director of minority affairs at Western that found racism around every corner. I worked with his wife who was a clone of him. She went so far as establishing a separate break room for the black teachers. Eventually he became such a media distraction at Western that they quietly fired him. Point is, if you create these kind of positions they'll find a way to prove their job is essential.

There are students on campus that do not care for the nickname. I'm not one to tell anyone what they should or should not find offensive. This is one of those issues where you'll never find 100% buy in.

A tiny minority can easily get the attention of the media, and we all know media attention scares the hell out of any organization. So buy in or not, the minority view point will most often win out regardless of the merits.

Thanks for all the info. I originally asked because I could not link up with the article and was not aware of what the gist or focus was actually on. I did not mean to suggest or start a pro or con discussion. Sorry of I did not make that clear.

There was a day when people needed to try and make things equal... but they aren't really needed anymore. I'm not naive enough to think that racism doesn't still exist, because it does... but I think some people just take it way too far anymore.

RE: Attack on Indian Nicknames and Mascots....
etbmingo, I have not been able to call up that article. That is why I asked about it here. The original post gave us a website but it doesn't link up no matter how I try. I have gone on the Morning Sun website but a search for the article comes up blank. I really can't comment on the article as I haven't seen it. I know I have my opinions on the topic but I wanted to find out what the state is up to now.

Re: Attack on Indian Nicknames and Mascots....
OK, I took a different route and I think I found the article concerning Mich. HS. It sounds like the suit is calling for the repeal of the generic Indian names such as warriors, indians etc. (although one school Morley-Stanford is the Mohawks, which I believe is an actual tribe). If that is the case I can see some merit in changing those mascots as they usually depict an indian or warrior in war attire. This is different from what we have here at CMU. That said, will the Washington Redskins ever have to change?? I doubt it.

Re: Attack on Indian Nicknames and Mascots....
I'm glad you read the article. I took a different route as well to find it. It does not cover Universitites/Colleges, but rather high schools. It only refers to 35 or so high schools, six of whom use the term, "Redskins". The article, though not giving the source refers to studies that show the problems with using these mascots. It is a well balanced article and I agree with the premise of the Michigan Department of Civil rights in this area. Unfortunately, a lot of folk did not take the time to read the article...oh well.
