Seems odd, but messing with things like this is what busy-bodies do to justify their existence. Similar to me getting five new sets of business cards in a seven year period due to divisional name changes by "marketing", while continuing to do the exact same day job....

It was proposed by the administration. We are the only (or one of the only) public schools in Michigan that has a 16 week calendar rather than a 15 week one. I think it's part to be uniform with other schools and probably a money saving issue by closing campus for an extra week. Personally I don't feel strongly either way.

That's easy, close it a week earlier at the end of the semester. Don't mess with the beginning.

Then you end up with finals week right after Thanksgiving break, not ideal. One of the initial reasons was to allow students to work longer over the summer and set up the start date with all other schools, after Labor Day.

If they let students start moving into the dorms on the Wed. before then many students would be there for the Thurs. games. Off campus students most likely would already be there.

I can see how this would affect the football schedule, but I always hated how long the semester break was. I never liked being off for almost a month. Typically classes ended around Dec. 15th and didn't start up until Jan. 10th. I would have rather had an extra week to work during the summer as it's pretty damn hard to find a job that will let you work for 1 month around the holidays.

Down here, Ohio State is on quarters and will sometimes play as many as three home games before school starts; of course, they needn't worry about attendance.

Schedule that first game as the big payday game in columbus and ann arbor, then have our big kick off game the weekend after students are on campus. I would think that is still possible being this early.

Re: Another hit to football?

I guess I don't really understand the problem.  According to the article, it would cost us big bucks to cancel the pre-Labor Day games, which we shouldn't do.  I don't think it matters if school has started, it's warm and with the right marketing, people come come whether school has started or not.  For many, the Thursday night game is a great start to Labor Day weekend and is convenient for people traveling North for the weekend.

With some creativity, we could tie it in with a Pure Michigan weekend.  That's the entire point of starting school after Labor Day in Michigan...toursim.

BTW, when we played MSU early in the season, they were not in session, most of the students were still working the fields and bringing in the crops.  It didn't seem to have much bearing on attendance!

Re: Another hit to football?

anyone who is a fan of college football i would think would want to come and see OKL ST, whether a CMU fan, student, or alumni, the name itself will be a draw I think. NCSTATE, meh, BCS yes will still draw a decent crowd I am excited but I could see casual fan not as big on this one.

I say leave it alone, cannot be any worse than bottom tier fcs comming into K/S ala Alcorn St.rolleyes

The difference being it costs us a lot more to host BCS-U that bottom tier fcs.  I think the AD was counting on drawing big crowds to help defray the cost of the game(s).

Students don't pay to get in 10...there or not... will not effect the bottom line.

Row, that is exactly what I was thinking! If anything maybe not having the students around makes more seats available for those curious to see NC State or Okie State. It really presents CMU with a marketing opportunity something we don't seem to handle all that well IMHO.

I understand that, but the freshmen do bring their families up on check-in weekend.  Having the family around and giving them a top notch game starts their entire college experience off great.  It gives the family the CMU experience and we dads love watching a great game at our students U's.  It just builds the base.

I think a10 has hit it right on. That Thurs. night game is a big draw for students and consequently their parents .
