Coach Brian Kelly--knows how to get the most out of his players

Coach Kelly built CMU into something special. Here is his take on the National championship:

"The team that makes the most mistakes will win."

I dont think so.He knows his team is undermanned and his players had to play real loose and over their heads to have a chance vs. an SEC.Kelly also knows the best teams are the most penalized because they are aggressive and make plays.

So far, the biggest mistake Notre Dame made was to get on the plane and head to South Florida.

Should have stayed in South Bend.... Alabama is making them look pretty bad... 28-0 at the half.

And to think everyone was complaining about NIU being "overmatched" in the Orange bowl.

(At least NIU was still in the game in the 3rd qtr only down 7pts).

Kelly is a much better coach when he has the best "play makers!"

Wow, looks like that multiple offense is better than the spread offense.

The best teams are not the most penalized. The Raiders and Lions are routinely among the NFL leaders in penalties. Where has that gotten them?

The key is being aggressive and intelligent at the same time.

Didn't know the Raiders and Lions play college football?Yes, some of the best teams in college football have been leaders in penalties.Several national champions like Florida,Auburn,LSU etc. were top 10% in penalties. In fact national champions have even been the top penalized team in the country.

That is talent overcoming penalties. I don't think it's in any team's formula to try and draw penalties.

Kansas State was second and Alabama was seventh in fewest penalty yards per game this season. I'll take that over the 91.5 per game drawn by UCLA. That's some mega yardage surrendered.

Also, Notre Dame was 32nd in fewest penalty yards per game. I don't think BK was telling his players to play in a way that will draw penalties.

Don't know if there's any Twitter users out there, but I found this tweet from Brunner rather interesting.

Brian Brunner ‏@bribrun

I will not. Roll Tide RT @CoachOpe: I will be eternally grateful for what Brian Kelly did for @CMU_Football. I wish him luck tonight.

Re: Coach Brian Kelly--knows how to get the most out of his

Kelly's words were obviously not for all to understand. He wasn't telling his players to "draw penalties."To have any chance,he understood his undermanned team had to play loose and aggressive and not worry about penalties. If you did your homework on several of the national champions and top teams in the 2000's,many were NCAA leaders in penalties due to their aggressive style of play.

Nobody tries to commit penalties, but being a leader in committing the fewest penalties, like CMU the last three years, obviously doesn't guarantee wins(see Enos' winning percent of 35%).

I honestly don't think he meant to say the team with the most, I think he got caught up in the moment and even Brian looked just a wee bit nervous last night prior to kick-off.

That was my elbow to the ribs of 70.  As for Weiss' players, did he look at himself everymorning and say "that is the shape of a great defensive lineman."  Seriously, that ND dl was not talented, deep, or fit.  Bet Kelly addresses his bubbas asap.

Re: Coach Brian Kelly--knows how to get the most out of his

First off, Brian went 12-1, which few coaches ever accomplish.  Enos will never see a 12-1.

The thing hurting Brian is Notre Dame doesn't play in the #1 conference---the SEC, that will mentally prepare the players.  With so many great teams--Bama, Georgia, LSU, A&M, Florida---your players have to be ready.  The players, themselves, have got to get themselves ready everyday.

Hard to do for Kelly when he's playing Navy, AirForce, Wake Forest, Temple, BYU and the like.

It drove Urban Meyer out of the SEC into a lesser pressure Ohio State job and a weaker conference---the Big Ten.

Kelly will have the #1 recruiting class coming in.  I think he can average 10-11 wins a year....but can he knock off the SEC in the bowls or upcoming playoffs?

Remains to be seen.

MSU is such a dumb school.  They had the great Nick Saban but were too cheap to pay him.  Then, they passed on Kelly for 6-6 Dantonio, a loser.

Saban is so far ahead of every other coach.

Good post.  Wonder when the SEC will start getting more tv $$$ for it's championship game.  It's become the BCS title game without the crystal football.

ND gets a pass to a better bowl game every season.  We all know that, except the koolaid believers.  They have special BCS provisions just for ND.  Why?  Because they draw a large tv audience; supporters and haters.

As for ND's schedule. . . it's true.  It doesn't prepare them for a big time end of the year bowlgame.  It does, however, assure them of getting there and receiving the related $$$$.  That is the goal.  If they wanted preparation they would have joined a tough conference years ago.

Re: Coach Brian Kelly--knows how to get the most out of his

The rumor I heard from FL fans was that what drove Urban out was a couple of pretty coeds who worked in his office.  Mrs. Urban gave the ultimatum.  If it were "health concerns" why did he jump right back into coaching in one of the biggest pressure cookers in the country?  His health concern was about getting a frying pan upside his head.
