Potato Bowl
The first MAC bowl game is underway between Toledo and #22 Utah State in what is basically a home game for USU.
Toledo has a 3-0 lead with 4:34 left in the 1st quarter. Game is on ESPN.
EDIT: Utah State just scored on a 62-yard fake option to take a 7-3 lead. 3:07 left in the 1st.

Re: Potato Bowl
Injury scrooge visits Toledo twice. Middle lb Dan Molls leaves early in first half and will not return. Shortly after that rb Fluellen re-injures his high ankle sprain and he is out for the game. Toledo hanging in down by 4 at the half (unless that chip shot field goal for UState goes goofy.

Re: Potato Bowl
Toledo playing sloppy game on offense. Two delay of game penalties, two times outs to avoid delay penalties, a dropped 40 yard pass by Readie, an INT inside the red zone.. UT coaches are causing qb problems by getting audible calls in very late over and over. Not what I would expect from a speed attack offense. Down by 7 in the 3rd.

Re: Potato Bowl
Toledo implodes in the 4th. Good grief. Trailing 13-6 they have a first down in the red zone and get ZERO. One play and they get the ball back for four more plays in the red zone. They settle for 3. So, they close to within 13-9. Then USU decides to run the ball ALL OVER THE FIELD> 60+ yard score, another 60+ yard score, another huge run for a score... They just simply got throttled in the fourth. 41-15. U G L Y
The Utah St coach was ready, his team was ready, and Toledo was never really in the game offensively. Poor communication all game long from the coaches to the qb's at the LOS.
Guess we will see if our Chips prepare of celebrate the entire month of December ala the Rockets.

Re: Potato Bowl
Here's hoping that the rest of the MAC steps it up a notch from the UT bunch, although Utah State was rightly both ranked and favored to win this contest. That was truly a poor effort by the Rockets and an epic collapse in the 4th. Anyone that was looking at their young coach as a possible candidate to move up the ladder would certainly be having second thoughts after watching the communications issues/burning of t.o.'s and overall game management today. Still much for the padawan to learn, apparently.

Re: Potato Bowl
I was thinking that same thing while watching the game. After the early communications problems, any coach with a future would be screaming in his headset and getting it straightened out. Not the youngest head coach in D1 football. The problem continued the entire game; the 13th game of the season. His future took a real hit tonight with his teams implosion, coaching failures, and inability to do almost anything offensively. 3 field goals and a kickoff return followed by a failed 2 pt conversion was the entire offensive display. Really weak. For you fans out there of our past offensive system... tell me what offensive style Toledo ran?

I have to tell you I can not ever remember watching a team fall apart on defense so late in a game as Toledo did tonight. It was sad to watch.

In the middle it talks about how spreading the field gives you a shot against the bigger programs. Anyhow, water under the bridge....for now.

Re: Potato Bowl
Losing their great LB and great RB gave them NO chance vs. a pretty darn good Utah State team! IMHO, If the two had remained healthy it would have been a great game!

Re: Potato Bowl
Those were two huge player losses. It doesn't explain the constant delayed play calling and poor sideline to qb communication. Toledo just wasn't ready.

Re: Potato Bowl
Yeh, I am rooting for the MAC to represent. We all are. Especially after Herbie (and his ESPN buds) railed on NIU qualifying for the Orange Bowl. That was a slam to all in the MAC. Not a good start.
I think UT matched up personnel wise, and with the game plan going in. As a10 mentioned it was more game time adjustments, communication, execution....looked bad. Key injuries didn't help either but EVERY team has those. Gotta push through that.
Hopefully the rest of the MAC bosses up.
Fire Up Chips !!

RE: Potato Bowl
The loss of their two top players, one on each side of the ball, certainly hurt UT and there is no way to tell how things would have turned out if they wee not hurt. I think it would have been a very good game. I also think that many of those bench problems were a result of using a 2 QB system. The cadence of each QB can really mess up a team. Let's hope the ret of the MAC has better luck and some wins.

RE: Potato Bowl
Not buying that 2 qb aruement. They have done that for two years. Plus, Danton played the entire game until somewhere in the 4th quarter. Those offensive coaches just didn't have it together. They were trying to read the defense, which was disquising and moving around just enough, stalling the annalysis. They needed to just get a play in and not try and be perfect on every call. It killed them, and their teams offensive moral after repeated delays and timeouts. Very poor adjustment and coaching.

RE: Potato Bowl
a10, if I am not mistaken UT has been penalized a lot all season, so yes, they have run that system but that doesn't mean that a change in mid game doesn't effect the cadence that the Oline is used too. Not totally to blame. Your points are very vaild, unprepared. I just think that system just adds to the confusion.

RE: Potato Bowl
The fact that they have had that problem all season tells me their coaches are morons (it's a technical term). At what point does the head coach grasp the problem and fix it?

WMU at CMU this year in the 4th qtr bring up any memories??? haha. No I wasn't joking. After my post I remembered the Western Michigan game but that fourth quarter performance did not impress me like this one did. This one was a complete blow up of the defense with the offense absolutely dominating. For me there is a difference - the difference between giving up a lot of points for a variety of reasons and simply being destroyed, dominated and run over. I agree with another poster that was a terrible loss for the MAC. We built a lot of good will with our overall performance during the regular season and I don't want to see that destroyed by poor bowl performances. Let's hope we don't see another one like that.
