Leaving a Wisconsin program paying in the three million annual range to a conference where the better coaches make in the six million range annually.Big difference.

NCAA should step in and stop this crap. Make these schools wait until after the bowl season to even talk to coaches. Make provisions for verbals (who are free until they sign anyway) to leave based on coaches movements. This is getting out of hand. It is all about the GREED and the $$$$$$$$. Forget the student athlete and the fact that universities have to subsidize most of these programs from their general budgets.

The Big Ten is CHEAP!
Bielema was making 2.5 million at UW...He will make more than 4-5 million a year in Arkansas. Probably why Butch won't go to Purdue.
You have the Big Ten Network paying all this dough. Where is it going?
Football coaches in the Big Ten should be the best paid in the country.

Re: It's getting Crazy out there...Bret Bielema to
Towney, you should get your facts straight before you speak.
According to a 2011 Forbes Magazine, that's a business magazine Towney, 10 of the 12 SEC football programs made a profit between 16 million and 52 million dollars.
Georgia made 52 million. I think Alabama made about 48 million. Arkansas made about 26 million dollars.
That's profit! The taxpayers, student tuition did not pay a penny for that profit.
So, Nick Saban, Mark Richt, the Cheesehead who is now at Arkansas, paying them 6-7-8 million a year is perfectly OK. Those coaches made the athletic department a profit!
Towney, what's wrong with profit? You must be an Obama Democrat who thinks any business that makes a profit is evil.
These SEC schools aren't dumb like MSU who let Saban leave. They know how to make money.
The NCAA should NOT step in. These profitable football programs have every right to pay top dollar as long as they are profitable and aren't asking taxpayers and students to fork over the money to subsidize them.
Towney, the real crime is Michigan taxpayers and CMU, WMU, EMU students who have to pay about 17 million dollars a year to keep the athletic departments afloat.
Before criticizing the SEC and the top profitable football schools, I'd first worry about poor MAC students who are having to fork over about $1,000 a year to support poorly-run athletic departments that are running 17 million dollar deficits.
Perhaps Heeke and the other MAC AD's could learn how the SEC makes money instead of criticizing them.

I am sure part of Beilema leaving is the money. Another part is that he wasn't necessarily loved by all Badgers. He probably resented some of the critizism he got each year regardless of the success they enjoyed. It's tough to follow a beloved coach (Barry A.) and he probably was feeling like he never got full credit or respect for their accomplishments.

Re: It's getting Crazy out there...Bret Bielema to
I remember Buster.
I get tired of people criticizing coaches who make a profit. They work hard.
A Notre Dame friend told me you have to pay ND $350 in addition to the cost of the ticket (so to avoid capitalistic ND alums from reselling their tickets). Probably going to cost you $450 for a ticket to the school. They'll generate probably $7 million just in extra ticket sale monies in addition to the bowl payout.
I think Brian Kelly deserves a little of that $350 since he's responsible.
Buster, I don't like people who think profit isn't right. Nothing around CMU is making a profit these days. They keep dipping into the reserves.
If a coach is making the department a 45 million dollar profit, then he or she deserves a piece of the action. NCAA has no business stepping in and saying no.

Not sure anyone was necessarily criticizing the coaches making money, but moreso the timing of coaches leaving. Definately screws a program and the current players when a change is made. More about the timing.

Where did I say I don't think colleges an coaches shouldn't make a profit? I was just agreeing with 70 that there should be some rules in place for coaches jumping ship at the expense of committed players.

RE: It's getting Crazy out there...Bret Bielema to
Thanks Towney. Herb must be one of the 2% who feels it ok to pay $500-$800 for a single game ticket to those schools making a profit at the expense of the STUDENT athlete. It is totally out of control when a football coach can make that kind of money, I don't care what you want to call me. That is way out of line, when we have thousands of students in debt up to their ears just to attend these universities. And please Herb spare me the free enterprise speal, I think it is morally wrong as well. p.s. How did I do Towney??

I think people mix the "coaches right to prosper" with "what is good for the team/program/athletes". My take anyway. I think most of us are cool with the free market, but where the NCAA could assist is in the timing. Recruiting aside, the season is not over for the students who made commitments until the bowl season is over. Coaches don't change teams mid-season, but for some reason (recruiting) it is justified to jump ship before the bowl game. I don't like it because it takes the luster off the team's successful season and destroys the team spirit just as the team is celebrating a good season and a bowl invite. There has to be a better way that works for everyone involved without compromising a coach's opportunity to advance or score more cash (whatever their motivation).

Of course, if those students actually supported CMU rather than bandwagoning whichever B1G team is having the better year, our AD wouldn't need any outside funding to stay afloat. Especially if they continued to support CMU after leaving campus. That is the real difference between the MAC schools and the BCS schools. BTW I don't disagree with your argument, I'm just pointing out the fact that this "subsidy" is self inflicted.
