A different look at 2014

A different look at 2014 Post Rating (1 vote)

Depending on Bryce Giddens' health and Alan Wright's performance at guard, we could possibly start NO Seniors on offense. (Also Kenneth Rains at TE)

Our skill players have only one player who is a SR, Rains.

On defense we have 5 SRs who will probably start on defense: Blackmon, Q Lee, Frankie, Brown, Young (Tryon makes 6 as first nickel corner).

Offensively, we could start two tackles who will have 3 years left to play. A former FR All-American WR who we have 2 more years with. Two more WRs who have 4 years, a freshman that our WR coach loves. Two freshmen RB who are impressive to the veterans already.

We have an SEC transfer who might have 3 seasons here back at home. A pass rushing demon who is coming off an injury stronger than he's ever been, according to him. A RS FR, who made the transition to defense and looked good in the Spring. Just like the All-Conf DE we have for two more seasons did. We have a bevy of FR on the DL and in the secondary who all could push for playing time. We have a LB who could lead the NCAA in tackles, and has been an utter joy to watch.

We have a QB who has been through the fire of big games in big situations, and we have 2 more years with him. Also 2 more years with one of the most electrifying RBs we've had. A huge, athletic TE with 2 more years.

We have a coaching staff that has more fun than the last one seemed to at any point, ever.

This could be a wildly fun year, special to the extreme, but only if we can put out support everywhere we can possibly do so.

I feel like we're on the verge of something huge here, something that could be the tipping point to what we all want, what we've looked for, and what we've suffered through the 90s for. I think we could do things that 20 years ago wouldn't have been dreamt of, heck probably weren't within the realm of imagination.

I may be wrong. I tend to be from time to time, but I can hold out the hope that these last few seasons have brought. I have an excitement that hasn't been there since Hugh got the HC position.

I hope we all feel the same, or at least similar.

Did we use the word 'precipice' correctly?

We have a lot of the talent. But I think the major determinant is coaching an. S&C.

We had a lot of talent last year but it didn't achieve all that it could have due to coaching.

I think Anderson has been planning and preparing his own gig for a long time. We need him and the staff to be hitting on all cylinders on day one. No Malzahn/Harsin style learning curve.

Important year.

Odd, I have no idea I  have two accounts. I signed in with a different email and it accepted it so I thought I was under this name. Oh well, wasn't trying to be grammar police because I was probably wrong...like always....

I was using it in terms of getting over the hill. But I'm only one person, that I know of, so WE did not do anything. I used it, though.

Maybe the term "verge" would make you happier.

Re: A different look at 2014

This team is so young at QB and all of the offensive skill positions and we have a lot of young guys on defense with excellent potential. With a team so young yet still good I think the team in 2015 could be the best we have yet. A lot of that depends on how the QB situation works out. If Fredi wins the job this year and plays well enough to start all year then in 2015 Fredi would have gotten plenty experience and could be even more dynamic that year, then a lot of the young guys that are already producing for us would have another year under their belt and we could see several key players become great that year and the young d-line wouldn't be so young anymore. Obviously this is a whole lot of maybes but the future looks bright and you also have to add in how well the coaching staff has been recruiting recently. Also on a side note, if a lot of this happens as we are hoping and the 2015 team is as good as they could be then we would have an excellent team at the time when we need one most: when an SEC team comes to Jonesboro. Only if it stays here haha.

On this current team, we could be good or we could be worse than expected. Our strong points to me are our skill positions on offense and our back seven on defense. Our weaknesses are both O and D lines and then our depth almost everywhere. A lot of how we do depends on how the QB situation pans out but I believe our offense will be fine. With basically our entire back seven returning our defense could be special and our secondary could absolutely dirty. However, like our offense and the QB situation, the performance of the defense could depend on how the D line turns out. If they turn out alright we could have a dominate D, if they don't then our great secondary and back seven all together could be wasted by the lack of experience and depth on the defensive line.

Personally, as optimistic as I am, I see most of this coming together nicely and could see us going 9-3 losing three of the four games to ULL, Tenn, USU, and Miami. Not sure on those games but to me I think we beat USU and lose to ULL. As unknown as this team really is I could see us losing all four games but I could also see us shocking Tennessee and maybe winning three of four with a loss to Miami. I focused on these games because it's the top teams but it's also important to not sleep on other conference opponents as we've learned from last year.

Its just fun to know that we EXPECT to compete in every game. This is the first time that I can ever remember that there is not 1 team on our schedule that we are realistically not already counting as a LOSS.
For years we realistically knew it would take a miracle to win THE MONEY games. I don't feel that way about anyone on our schedule!

Miami might be the one I feel the worst about, but I feel like Tennessee is actually on par with Utah State.

(Side note: if Tennessee opens up with losses to the Aggies and us, will Butch Jones make it out alive?)

Yes, because they have a proven QB. If they lose to us.....the talk will start.

Edit....misread it. Losses to both....tough call, but very likely.

it all comes down to depth at most every position. If we find it early, things could go very well this season. If not......

The biggest thing for me this year is I think how much more comfortable I am with this staff than the last two. Combing personality, recruiting, commitment to the program, loyalty, and football expertise. And it feels good.
