The powers that be and boosters need to start thinking about a tad bit more investment in their coach or this is going to be a never ending story!!!!!

I guess I drank the Kool-Aid and thought he really wanted to turn ASU into "Boise-South." As a fan of ASU, this one stinks. I'm sure he'll find a way to spin it, but it seems as if money bought Gus (and his wife).

Nothing, not even abject contrition, merits the favor of God.

Sucks big time. I'd like to thank Gus for a good year . . . and then take away his entry pass to the state of Arkansas. Goodbye sir! Could have just made ASU bigger and bigger every year.

I know it sucks, but keep your heads up!

You all on are the risee and potential coaches see that.  Keep on trying at that ONE will stay!

Being an Ole Miss fan, we got done this way with Tuberville.
Freeze, I am glad we have him.  At least him leaving maybe was a little easier for you all to stomach being he was from Ole Miss as far as a "die hard fan" and grew up near there.  From you all's opinion, who is a better head coach, Freeze or Gus M?  I know Gus will now have more resources than Freeze.

As a head coach it's hard to say. IMO only time will tell.

USC Gamecock fan here ... would you consider Chad Morrison of Clemson? He is a student of Malzahn, so picking up the offense should not be a problem.

Re: Lost another first year coach

so you wouldn't take a job that doubled your salary?

If you guys want to keep a Coach you need to hire someone really young (Kingsbury) or someone older (Phil Fulmer). Kliff wont be going anywhere for 2 or 3 years and this would probably be Fat Phils last job.

AU fan coming in peace. Sorry to steal Gus from you guys, but I am sure it would have been hard for him to turn down such a pay increase. I know it sux to lose two good coaches in a row, but we are sure glad to have Gus back. Hope you guys can find a good replacement for him. I will be pulling for you in the Go Daddy Bowl and hope to see you in Auburn next fall. Happy Holidays!

More than an increase in pay we need to focus our efforts on getting out of the SunBelt.  We are the Rodney Dangerfield conference of FBS (we can't get any respect) and good coaches will always see us as a steppping stone no matter how much we pay them because they want to go where they can play against better competition.  Being the best in the Sun Belt is almost like saying we are the prettiest fat girl at the prom.

Good point. Any news on that front?

If there is, it is being drowned out with all the coaching search chatter.

Re: Lost another first year coach

I dont think you want to leave the Sunbelt just yet... You're on a Boise State path if you can either nab an Old Coach or a Young Coach.  The top 5 coaches I'd consider would be 1. Brent Pease  2. Klif Kingsbury 3. Skip Holtz 4. Major Applewhite 5. Dan Hawkins.

After you get about 5 SBC Titles Make the jump to CUSA or the Big East.

But IMO you either need a good young Coach (Pease is probably too old) who other programs would be afraid of because of his age (like KK or MA) or a guy who has won in the lower conferences but failed in the BCS AQ Conferences.

Once you rattle off 5 Sunbelt Conference titles you're on Boise State level.

I might have agreed with that sentiment before C-USA came and raided us this year. Now we are being forced at looking into bringing up some more FCS programs like Appy State to fill in the gaps. It will continue to be that way. I guarantee that the first chance that ULL and ULM could get to jump into a different conference, they would take it, and so should we if the opportunity presents itself.

In 10 years Boise State won 7 WAC titles... The SUNBELT is the new WAC. You want to stay in the SUNBELT establish your Brand of Football then jump once you win a few more titles.  I would bet in 20 years you could be members of the Big 12, ACC, or SEC (If things change with the Cable deals).

RE: Lost another first year coach

Gus didn't leave because of the money. We offered $1.4 mill to stay and he took $2.3 mill to get his ego to the bigger stage. I am sure he thought it would take another year or two before Chizik was let go but it didn't work out that way. Gus planned this the whole time.

As for conferences, Gus was working to make our schedule as soft as possible next year because all that matters is winning games, not whom you beat or the conference. NIU hit the jackpot by going 12-1 in a weaker conference than the Sun Belt. Don't think the MAC is weaker? The Sun Belt is favored in all 4 bowl games against the MAC.

Gus was dishonest but it is over now. There are several up and coming OCs who can take the talent that the previous coaches recruited and continue making postseason trips. A new football facility will soon be built (the construction contract is up for review next week at the Capitol) and we averaged 27K a game this year. Keep this momentum going and eventually we can pay upwards of $2 million and keep a coach.

Until then I would rather be a stepping stone than a graveyard.

Not much doubt about it. Gus was a fraud.

Well in a way he did. We ended up with the offensive coach that took Boise on their rise. Even tho Harsin doesn't like the Boise on the south thing. He said we will be the Arkansas state of the south. I like that one personally.

Good for him.
I always thought that "Boise State of the South" thing was a bit cheesy.
