2009 Birdhouse Fantasy League(s)?

Are we going to get together a league or two this year?

Boy, this thread doesn't get much exposure down here.  Maybe I'll link on the main forum with Mod approval.

I have never done a keeper league, but I'd be willing to try!

Re: 2009 Birdhouse Fanatay League(s)?

cool... well, we can start to put together the league here...

how many teams?
NL only? AL only? both?
batting stats?
pitching stats?
how many keepers?
head to head or points?
how many positions?
how many players and bench size?
waiver rules?
quitter rules (as it affects the year and the keepers)?
cheating rules (see above)?

Thinking out loud...

how many teams?

10?

NL only? AL only? both?

Both?

batting stats?

OPS, R, HR, RBI, SB?

pitching stats?

W, S, ERA, WHIP, K?

how many keepers?

No idea how that even works...

head to head or points?
how many positions?

C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, OF, OF, OF, UTIL

I cannot recall the pitcher set-up exactly.

waiver rules?
quitter rules (as it affects the year and the keepers)?
cheating rules (see above)?

Wow, keeper leagues must be REALLY different.  I am interested in trying it!

i like 10...but if we are gonna use both leagues, the FA pool will be pretty enormousmaybe 12-14 then?

NL only? AL only? both?

Both?

batting stats?

OPS, R, HR, RBI, SB?
i always have hated HR's as a stat...i'd rather do TB's..i just feel a guy hits one HR he gets4 stats for it...whiel the guy that gets a triple and doesnt score gets 1...doesnt seem fair....doing TB's still gives the HR guy credit, but without demeaning a quality doubles hitter...also i like havign at least one negative stat in pitching and batting as well as hits
i prefer: OPS/R/TB/RBI/SB/E/H

pitching stats?

W, S, ERA, WHIP, K?
i like those..but i like L's too
i prefer: W/L/S/ERA/WHIP/HOLDS/K

how many keepers?

No idea how that even works...
basically we just decide how many keepers we want to have for the next season...it just allows you to potentially draft players early, ahead of other players in hopes that they will help you in future years, i drafted Rasmus in a keeper league last year, and i put him on my keepers list so i have him this year...i have also thoguht abuot drafting players that are not in the system either at even lower levels, but have not shown up in the Yahoo database...if you really want to draft Brett Wallace, but he isnt in the system then i think you can take that chance...but you potentially sacrifice what stats you can accumulate during each week...it is a gamble but could pay off in the future...i think we could find a way to do this...
i prefer (for this size of a draft pool): 1 keeper at each batting position, 2 SP's, 3RP's=13
basically, you coudl keep your team intact from year to year much like a real team...if a guy is eligible at multiple positions you coudl keep him at any of the positions

head to head or points?
i prefer: head to head for this type of league..with a minimum innings pitched of 35inn per week

how many positions?

C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, OF, OF, OF, UTIL
I cannot recall the pitcher set-up exactly.

I prefer: C/1b/2b/3b/lf/cf/rf/util
and
SP/SP/SP/SP/RP/RP/RP/RP/P

how many players and bench size?
waiver rules?
quitter rules (as it affects the year and the keepers)?
cheating rules (see above)?

they really arent that different...they are just a way to keep your league going from year to year... you jsut need to have some rules about people quitting or being inactive..or cheating...i have opinions on all of this, and really i am fine setting up the league, i just dont want to do it if we cant find players that want to keep it going over the years...i think we have a nice group of people in this board that woudl want to play year in year out...

my main idea is that we draft a 25man team (basically a modified 40man). With 13 keepers, you can keep the core of your group intact or potentially hold onto your youngsters. There woudl be 17 starting positions each day and you can chaneg your lineup each day...basically that would leave you with a 8man bench. Now you can use those players in multiple ways..either you can try to hold all the young talent not up yet..or you can have active players that boost your stats during the week...it makes it a bit of gamble to go either way too much...you coudl miss out on the young talent at the expense of winning the week or the Championship, or you could go with young talent and hope your everyday guys can keep up..i find it better to go with a few youngsters not up yet and the rest as active guys...you can only keep 13 so even if you stockpiled kids, you would not necessarily be able to keep all of them and keep your proven talent intact...i think i would put a limit on the latest date you can add players outside of the Yahoo player listing though...as a means of stopping teams that were way out of it to dump their teams and stop being competitive..probably some agreed upon time after the draft...

i think i might go and start setting up the league now....obviously this woudl have to be a Live Draft (as close to openign day as possible) to facilitate the additions of non Yahoo listed players (of which when they came available i woudl manually add them to your team regardless of waiver priority etc.)..there is a comments section on each team screen so you can put alist of your non yahoo listed players...i will also have a runnign list in the discussion part of the league page...

whew...that was a lot... i will go and start setting it up and we can hammer out the details as we go...but i am really goign to need you to help find players...i will start it at 12 i think and we can adjust it as needed...we can open it to the public if we need to fill spots, but potential for quitters always goes up in that situation...you gotta have people invested in this in the long term or it will be no fun...

Sounds good.

I am excited about trying something new.  I wonder if we can get 12-14 people on here interested in doing a keeper league?

So...if I want to draft, say, Jess Todd and he is not listed, what do I do when I get to the point the draft where I choose to draft him?

being that it woudl be a live draft...you could explain in the live blog that goes on at the same time...what we coudl do is pick a player from the bottom of the ratings system that no one wants and use that as a stand in player...also i think there might be players you can draft that are filler players...i cant remember fro sure..regardless we will make it work

Please PM me the information when you are ready to get this going. I am up for a keeper league or a regular league and will be very involved this year. I work from home so I have the time to keep up with fantasy baseball this year!

I am interested in the keeper league.  Send me the details.

I also set-up a NL only league again.  The invite should have went out to those that participated last year.  If anyone else is interested let me know.

Cool...I am interested in doing both.

Two leagues would be my max, though.

Re: 2009 Birdhouse Fanatay League(s)?

I run several keeper lges.  How we do it is you have to draft only guys who are available at the time.  As the season goes on when players get called up and become available in yahoos database, then those guys can be picked up by whoever, then at the end of the season you decide how many keepers and keep them from the guys at the seasons end roster!
