Going to Chicago this weekend....

Going to Chicago this weekend....

...with my folks.

We already have tickets to see the Cubs and White Sox (in separate games).

Does anyone have any suggestions as to things we should do while we're in Chicago? We're staying in the Palmer House Hilton, so we'll be right in the middle of everything. I already have quite a few things for us to choose from, but if any of you have any recommendations, it would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Skinny, there are soooo many things to do around that area. Are you looking for food, shopping, entertainment or what? Within a few blocks of the Palmer House, there are plenty of all of the above.

Entertainment mostly, I guess. I've already made a list of a bunch of things to do...Art Institute of Chicago, Navy Pier, planetarium, aquarium, etc.

You plan to do all that AND get in some entertainment.  You must plan on sleeping very little.  Unfortunately, the entertainment portion of life in Chicago is my downfall.

Well, forsch, I guess we are going to squeeze in as much as we possibly can. We are taking the Amtrak, leaving Saturday morning at 12:22 and arriving in Chicago at around 9am. Then we leave Chicago at around 8pm on Wednesday the 13th, so we will have five full days to fill. Like I said, we already have tickets to the White Sox and Cubs. The White Sox game is at 2pm Saturday. After that, I believe we are going to take the Water Tour of Chicago, so Saturday is pretty much filled.

I know I definitely want to go to the Art Institute and Navy Pier. Aside from that, what specific things do you like to do in Chicago?

I have been to the downtown area of Chicago 4 times and I am still amazed at all there is to do. I haven't even scratched the surface of knowing what there is. I found an interactive map that hits on some of the neighborhoods around where you will be staying. My family stayed in the Palmer House this past December. It is absolutely gorgeous.

Loop
Streeterville
Magnificent Mile
River North

Maybe you could get an idea from that.  Otherwise, there has to be someone who would know a lot more about Chicago than me.

I lived in downtown Chicago for five years. What kind of stuff are you looking for? Daytime? Nighttime? Food? If you narrow down what you're interested in I might have some tips.

I'm a fan of museums and judging by your possible interests it sounds like might be as well.  My wife and I went last summer and ended up at the Museum of Science and Technology and we had a great time.  It's similar to a the Science Center in St. Louis except for much larger and more comprehensive.  Along with typical science/tech exhibits, they had exhibits on business/industry, as well as a WWII exhibit complete with an actual WWII submarine that you could tour.

You may want to look into a CityPass if you are going to go to multiple attractions as it can save you a bit of money (as well as skipping most lines, which was huge for the aquarium).

Skinny-

Enjoy!  I lived there many years ago, so I'm probably out of date.  All the things you've raised are good, especially the Art Institute and Field Museum.  I had no money at the time, so spent a lot of time at free concerts in Grant Park.  And I'm a big fan of the deep dish or stuffed pizzas, though you can get much more conventionally good food.  Edwardo's and Giordano's were my standards.  Well, My Pi, too, but the one I used to go to is long gone.  There's good theater too.

Hope it's a great time!

I love Giordano's! Add Millennium Park to your list as you have to get your standard "bean" picture. Always a good time walking around there with the free concerts that are often going. There are also some good comedy clubs and shows but you don't need me to tell you that.  Parking was privatized so it is like 5.75 an hour so I'd either walk or use the "EL" (or properly known as the "L' despite standing for "elevated").

Oh I would also suggest riding the Metra north and visiting the Chicago Botanical Gardens. They are absolutely beautiful. Also, if you walk in, they are free.

Hmmm....Knowing Skinny, I figured he might want to spend his entire vacation shopping.

Funny you should mention it...they had some cool pink Chicago Cubs t-shirts and caps, and I almost picked one up for you. It would've been perfect for your wardrobe. It would have gone great with your pink thong and stilettos!
