Re: Any golfers?

I think I already have as many birdies this year as I had last year.  I just need to figure out how to putt and hit out of the sand.

My keys to hitting out of the sand:

1.  Have the right club.  Most of the courses I play only have sand around the greens so I usually get to use my 60 degree sand wedge with a thin sole.

2.  Keep your body level through the swing.  Most people who have a problem in the sand dip their bodies right before impact.  This is to scoop the ball out of the sand.  The club will scoop the ball for you if you aim to start scooping the sand about 1 1/2 inches behind the ball.

3.  Do not swing with just your wrists or swing slow.  It is still a normal swing.

4.  The key to the proper distance is the back swing.  You want a fairly full follow through.

I am a long ways from an expert but I usually do fairly well in the sand by staying with these principals.

Thanks for the sand tips.  I use a 56 degree wedge.  Last year I would just try to pick it out of the sand.  Now I take a bigger swing and try to hit behind the ball.  Still a work in progress.

I've had my new driver since Monday and I STILL haven't had a chance to even take it out of the plastic.

So sad...

What kind of driver do you have.   I like my Callaway FT9, but already have my eye on a razrhawk.  My buddy just bought the Nike Victory.  It seems to work for him.

Shot an 86 today, and tallied another birdie.

Bridgestone J36 8.5 degree with Fujikura Motore F1 65g X flex.

The sales rep let me hit his (same specs) a couple weeks ago and I was instantly sold.  The shaft is the diffference.  I hit it right alongside an R11 and a Titleist 910D3 and it felt better than both of those.

It took my a while to find one.  Bridgestone was completely out of the X flex shafts so I had to find one already in stock in a shop somewhere.  After a week or so I found a shop in Texas whose rep said he had one in plastic in his garage.  Blind luck.

And I still haven't hit it yet.  Bad week to get a new driver, I guess. I have been crazy busy.

Re: Any golfers?

Plastic still on my driver.

frown

Got a new slowpitch bat too...and it showed up the day AFTER a tournament.  I was not happy.  Just opened it and ripped off the grip last night.

As an aside...is there a reason why $300 softball bats have 12 cent plastic-y grips and an untapered knob?  Is the tapered knob just a baseball thing?  I cannot even hold a bat without a taper.  I wrap two fingers below the knob and that is almost impossible without a taper...so I have to build my own with tape.

No matter, I guess...I haven't used a stock grip on a baseball/softball bat since I was maybe 13 or 14.  I always build my own with tape.  I was just holding this thing last night thinking if I expected to use this bat with this grip I would be hugely disappointed in the grip itself.

Just one on the first hole.  I used the new technique  and put it 5 feet from the hole.  I missed the putt though.  There isn't much sand at the municipal courses in Peoria, IL.

I didn't even know that Bridgestone made clubs.  You don't see them at the stores around here.

They do and they are excellent.  Their irons rock.  They are having trouble breaking in to the US but they are number one in Japan.  My local golf shop (a pretty big but locally owned one) carried them because the owner loved them personally...but he couldn't get rid of them...even for cost.

Weird, too, because Bridgestone had a club/ball fitting and demo day a few months back and he walked away with orders for two drivers, a set of fairways, four sets of irons, and a bunch of wedges - at full MSRP.  And yet he couldn't sell them for cost when they were just sitting next to the Callaways on the shop floor...

As soon as I hit this driver I was over my desire for a Titleist 910D3, a R11, or something of that ilk.

That sounds encouraging.

Do you every play at Weaver Ridge?  Plenty of sand there.

I play Weaver about 3 times per year.  I went to Lick Creek last week and shot 93 with 38 putts.  And only two sand shots.  One good and one decent.

Re: Any golfers?

Played Cedar Creek again last Sunday.  Conditions were good and we stayed dry for 18 despite all day thunderstorms in the forecast.

The greens were wicked, though.  I didn't remember them being like this but they are dramatically sloped and sometimes unusually shaped.  And, for all the rain we've had, they were pretty fast.  I putted terribly all day.

And my new driver is going to take some getting accustomed to.  The extra still shaft gives it a VERY different feel than my whippy stiff shaft that I was previously used to.  I was erratic off the tee.  I did nail a couple though.  I drove the fringe on number 9 (330 yard par 4).

I think I ended up at 95 but bad putting might have cost me as many as ten strokes.  I missed everything all day long.

In the fringe on a 330 yard hole is very impressive.

I'm looking forward to playing a couple of St. Louis courses in the next few week.  I have Gateway National and the course at Forrest Park on my radar.  Any other suggested St. Louis area courses?

It seems like most of the companies today put out pretty good golf clubs.  Taylor Made, Ping, King Cobra, Callaway and even Nike have some pretty good clubs.

I hear for the money that Tour Edge is a good value.

Re: Any golfers?

Been out 3 or 4 times now with my father in law and he doesn't like that i can now shoot better score than him consistently on the course he has been a member of for a few years now.  Now mind you it is still not a good score but shooting 5 or 6 over par is not bad considering how i really have not played for 7-8 years.

However still going to have to get me some better clubs as the ones i use are a good 15 years old min and really have to hit the ball square on the nose because they are not very forgiving at all.  Just got to find some good clubs but don't want to break the bank on them either, any good ideas guys?

Re: Any golfers?

Update:

I played about 20 rounds this year (and I hope to get one or two more in before the courses close).  I am also planning a Jan/Feb weekend golf trip with my dad to South Florida...or maybe the Caribbean.

I completely ditched my Bridgestone J38 8.5 degree driver w/ Fujikura Motore F1 65g X flex after just a few rounds.  I hated it.  I guess the standard "switching from steel to titanium adds 30 yards" talk is just bs.  I LOST that much.  Easily.

I sold the J38 on ebay on a whim and haven't looked back.  I hit my steel Callaway Hyper X Tour 8.5 w/ Aldilla Wasabi stiff 30 yards farther...and a lot straighter.

My handicap app had me at 17 in the beginning and I ended around 14...BUT I actually became stricter about "golf rules" in the process...so I was probably more like a 20+ in the Spring.  I have improved a ton with irons and my driver.  My problem, overwhelmingly, is putting.  I can't putt for crap anymore.  I 3 putt more than a couple times a round and it just ticks me off.  If I figure out putting, I can shave 5-10 strokes off my average round EASILY.  Yes, it is that bad.  I'm probably a 5-7 handicapper until I hit the stupid green.

I am in the market this winter for new irons.  My current ones aren't bad - but in addition to being used, generic PINGS that were custom-fit for someone else, I've found out they are at least 12-15 years old and shafted for a senior.

I am leaning towards, after several demos, Taylormade Tour Preferred CB Forged.

Deep down I know I should replace my old Callaway driver, too, but I hit it straight (mostly) and consistently 280-300 so I don't know why I should mess with it.

I have also ditched, for the time being, using the tour (expensive) balls.  They are great for short shots but they produce too much lateral spin for me off the tee and from longer irons.  I like some mid-high balls like Titleist NXT Tour and the new Srixon Q Star.

The TaylorMade Rocketballz clubs come out this Friday.

I might check out some belly putters.

Re: Any golfers?

The weather has been so mild this year that a couple of courses have been opening several days per week.  A retired guy down the street told me a couple days ago that he'd played 99 holes locally since New Years.

Unbelievable.
