Cardinals Arizona Fall League Notebook

Check out UConnCard's free preview article, summarizing opening day of the 2012 Arizona Fall League. The Cards have eight players competing for the Surprise Saguaros this year and we will be covering the action daily for subscribers.

Here is an interesting one for you. Two of the Cards' top prospects were born on the same day, October 10, 1990. Both Shelby Miller and Kolten Wong turn 22 today and both are in uniform today - though almost an entire continent apart.

Not necessarily. They are careful with pitchers, and given Whiting has only thrown 35 innings all season long, they are probably going to ramp him up vs. pitching him five or six innings from the beginning. In his last tuneup at instructs last week before heading to Arizona, he threw just one inning.

Big day for Cardinal players today.

Siegrist 3 innings no hits or runs, no bb and 5 k's

O'Neill 3-5, now hitting .455

Walsh 2-5 with two doubles

Stanley 2-4 with a double

Freeman scoreless inning with a K

Suprise won 10-2, Siegrist the winning pitcher

bumping this as need more AFL talk :P

- kolton wong continues to be a stud
- sam freeman shut down due to tendonitis
- mike o'neil hitting good, but again, zero power and having trouble getting a defensive profile
- colin walsh hitting about average (mainly thanx to 1 really good day) but still having trouble finding a defensive position
- cody stanley not doing so well
- siegrist, whiting, and blair all pitching great and are the teams best starters. other than 2ip during their entire time, whiting and siegrist have been lights out. blair doing great too, but losing significant stamina after about 3ip while still walking too many.

question about the AFL championship game...

is it the best two records that play, or is it west champs vs east champs?

i ask because our guys are on the team with the 2nd best record, but unfortunately in the division with peoria who has the best record in the entire league.

The two division winners play in a single championship game to be held Saturday afternoon 11/17.

For those interested in seeing Surprise, MLB Network will be televising their game this Saturday night (tomorrow) at 7:10 PM Central.

hope they can overtake peoria then.

last night against them, whiting got lit up. fortunately for him, all of o'neil, stanley and walsh got 2 hits, of which stanley's were both HRs. walsh had 2 rbi's too.

seth blair pitching tonight that all of you can see on the mlb network if you have it.

Cody Stanley and Colin Walsh are also in the lineup. After Blair made a two-base throwing error in T1st, Stanley was creamed in a home plate collision, but held on for the out.

RE: Cardinals Arizona Fall League Notebook

blair was horrible on saturday in what might have been his final AFL start (depends on if he'll come out of bullpen on thursay or if we can overtake peoria to play in championship game)

speaking of peoria, they are 1/2 game up with 2 games to play. its a half game due to ties basically dont count in the standings and we have 1 more tie than they do.

also, looks as if kolton wong may be hurt? all i know is that he has not played since nov 8th

Re: Cardinals Arizona Fall League Notebook

Whiting's strikeout rate is really promising.

I don't see how anyone can consider Blair a reliever with WHIP over 1.5 though.  That's awful for a reliever.

I think we are getting a clearer picture of our minor league rotations with this.

Does it look like Siegrist, Whiting, and Blair will start in AA next year to anyone else?

With Wacha and Martinez, that is a formidable rotation.
