Good info, DMENS. I just find it comforting that when a ball is hit his way that he's not going to botch it up. He might just come up big offensively yet in this series. Boy some of our big bats need to get untracked though. I don't know when I've seen Craig's bat so quiet? That needs to change quickly.
Craig has gone ice cold. He had 8 hits and 3 walks in his first 19 playoff ABs. But over his last 13 ABs he has no hits and 2 walks. I absolutely agree that it is imperative he figures things out at the plate if we want to beat San Francisco.

As for Koz, he has made some big plays defensively and despite poor offensive output (save a few clutch hits) I'm as comfortable with him out there as I am anyone else.

That's not quite the production we saw during the regular season from him, but it also probably isn't much better or worse than what Furcal would be doing.
...or some other regulars not named Beltran or Freese.

And his timing has been second to none.
I'd argue a .351 OBP from your 8th place hitter with a few clutch RBIs is pretty good, and probably better than Furcal.  Throw in the defense and Furcal is nowhere to be found in this discussion.

The 10 Ks is a telling factor that reminds us he can still be over matched at some points.  However, I would add that I can't remember seeing an at bat that he looked intimidated or lost at the plate.  The kid has a nice cool approach where he doesn't try to do too much.

Lastly, I would be ecstatic with that line for a full season.

The OBP is what really catches my eye too. There is a huge gap between his average and his OBP, which is outstanding. And, impressive for a rookie playing in such high leverage situations. My only point in bringing this up is that there is a perception that Koz is peppering hits all over the field like he was in the regular season. He's not.

Prior to the famous G5@WAS, Koz was hitting .133/.381/.400. After G5@WAS he is at .200/.273/.300. That single game sort of inflates both our perception and his statistics. 33% of his postseason hits and RBIs came that game, with the other large portion of them coming in the 8-0 blowout versus WAS.

His key to sustaining success, IMO, is just getting on base. The patience at the plate, and intelligent pitch selection, is probably why we are seeing him get clutch hits. I wouldn't be happy with a full season of our SS hitting .200. But if he could balance a sub-par BA with an above average OBP for the position, I too would be thrilled.

EDIT: FWIW, last year Furcal hit .195/.244/.325 in the postseason. His WPA was pretty negative too. Needless to say, he was terrible. It doesn't take much for Koz to be more productive. I don't really consider Furcal worthy of discussion either, but I didn't have anyone else to compare to since he is who Koz is filling in for.

Koz = Dal Maxvill with a little pop in his bat.

Right now, with what should be good production from the 1-through 6 slots in the lineup (although primarily Molina, and to a little lesser extent Jay and Holliday haven't done all that much), and an occasional bonus from the 7 spot, all we need from Kozma is good defense.

I've been very impressed with his defense. He looks like a polished shortstop defensively, with an above average arm. If he can get on base once or twice a game, all the better.

Kozma is tied with Holliday and Jay for the team lead in post season RBI (7), and is one behind Descalso for the team lead in Runs (9).

I think we could quite possibly be looking at a quick annulment, CardZilla.

Matheny, please get Kozma out of this game!!  He is embarrassing himself tonight in front of everyone.  He's done well this year, so just let his season end early for his sake.

Kozma mishandled balls, didn't make makeable plays, made bad decisions (one at least), and was victimized by bad luck. Basically, looked like a boob out there. Too bad for him that was the final impression he left us with. On the up side (for him), plenty of others looked like boobs too.

Our Minf is a little unsettled. Hopefully Furcal can give us 120 games. IMO the 2nd base job is wide open and so is the backup job. Mo has already said they'll look internally for options next season. Let's hope he hasn't shut the door on adding a couple of players.

Overall Kozma showed enough in his stint with the big club that he will get a chance to make the team next Spring.

Based on his minor league career, you wouldn't think he'll hit much at the big league level. But he squared up a lot of pitches while with the Cardinals and who knows, maybe he's just now maturing into a capable hitter.

I also get the impression that Pete's welcome, or has been embraced, within the clubhouse, too.  That won't hurt his cause.
